www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/710768.pageThis link is a thread in a forum for Washington DC Metro parents, (I discovered the forum by happenstance yesterday.) The thread title is 'Tell me about the College of the Holy Cross?" There were 39 posts starting in March, 1839 views as of this morning. Newest posts are on the last page of the thread. Fair to say, in the opinion of many posters, Worcester doesn't help. _______ Colgate admissions gets dinged. www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/753460.pageDS means Darling Son, DD Darling Daughter

Best post, by far: The poster was called out and corrected that BC is, in fact, a Jesuit school.

Well Phreek, since GateRaider seems not to be on here anymore to defend himself, I saw that while there were pages and pages of comments about Holy Cross, its great academics, student body and strong alumni network, there were but 4 posts for Colgate. Then I realized why . . . . . it is under Col agate. That extra "a" will put a damper on comments.

Some of the back and forth jibing is amusing, but HC comes off very favorably.
I did note this post, from August, concerning a tour this summer. The parent was disappointed that the son had crossed it off his list.

Seems like "worrying about the things you can control" would be an obvious response here.
HC and Worcester have been together for 175 years, with many more to come. What's the point?

Yale is in the hood. HC is in the hood. Albany is in the hood. A school is a school. You can avoid the mess if you want. If you like Boston, you could always take a train or bus from Worcester... otherwise, for me as a prospective student, it was a little bit of a drag but not enough to move the needle.
Conversely, I did not trust myself to go to a school like Miami, for example, and expect to maximize the academic side and minimize the beach/party/pool aspect. So the frigid winter temps, winds on the Worcester hills, and opposite-of-scantilly-clad-women kept me (somewhat) in check!

Well, let's test the theory by changing leadership, marketing, and overall strategy in admissions -- and see what happens.

Don’t get sucked into any message board where people talk about DS or DD. Those people make our worst threads look normal.

While I wouldn't wander far off the Clark campus late at night, Southbridge St is not in that league

Worcester has really bad sections, bad sections, nice sections and really nice sections just like every city in the US. Does NYC drag down NYU?

If you think Holy Cross is in the hood then you must have never seen a real hood. I've had friends that lived in projects so bad that the government shut them down and razed them, so I have an idea. Holy Cross specifically, within a quarter mile in any direction, is pretty safe. However, people were breaking into houses on Caro St. when I went there, and if you go farther than a quarter mile out, you can get into some really sketchy neighborhoods. Agreed on the later point that it's not unlike any other city with some really nice parts, some really awful parts, and some parts in-between. Like I said, nothing that kept me from going to HC and loving the experience.

Worcester was a non-factor years ago when was picking a college and I went to HC. I found many places in te city I loved and a few to avoid. It was pretty much, as has been said, like any other city in that regard.
The one/only time an "environment" was a factor for me was when I avoided the Temple grad school in 1968. That may have changed a great deal since back then.
