Guessing this is the Nativity school based on all males in picture and how they are dressed. Good for MP!

Tues, Wed, and Thurs, there are about a dozen or so HC students that work with Nativity kids (grades 5 thru 8) one on one. From the text it looks like Marcellus has signed up to be a Thursday night guy. I will infer from this, that contrary to the published roster, Marcellus will not be attending practices on Thursdays

He's said his basketball-playing days are over, so not sure it matters much when practice is, as far as his participation is concerned.

However, his name is still on the published roster - and I assume he is still on scholarship. It is possible that his attendance at practice is still required. Maybe as a senior with 3 years of at least sitting through practice he could work with some of the freshmen. We were here three years ago. I can't say the player in question went to every practice, but he was on the bench (in civies) every game - home or away

I remember that, and his injury. I know that he did get to keep his scholarship, but IIRC it did not count against the maximum number of "team" scholarships.
Whatever his current status, Marcellus is and will continue to be a natural leader. It is heart warming to see young people benefitting from that leadership.

As students, I would hazard a guess that not a single basketball player has attended every practice be it for labs, classes, excusals to prep for exams or, in this case, volunteer work to which Holy Cross gives a high priority.
But if the athlete is on a non-active playing status, I just don't see anyone expecting him to give a higher priority to a practice than doing this kind of activity.
Anyway, good for you, Marcellus!
