From the BUCKNELL website:
VILLANOVA, Pa. – No. 14/15 Villanova downed the Bucknell football team, 49-7, on Saturday at Villanova Stadium in the first meeting between the Pennsylvania programs since 2005. The Bison, who last faced a ranked opponent during the 2016 campaign, were stymied by a slow start for the second-straight game. During the first quarter, the high-powered Wildcats stormed out to a 28-0 lead. They needed just 12 offensive plays to score their four touchdowns, three of which came on the ground and one of which was a school-record 90-yard bomb by Zach Bednarczyk to Josh McGrigg. In total, they racked up 230 yards of offense and limited the Bison to just 32, all but three of which came through the air. Bucknell got on the board at the 7:56 mark of the second quarter, capitalizing on a Villanova fumble during a punt return. Ryan Brida forced the fumble, and Mike Colantuono came up with the ball at the Wildcat 12. Three plays later, Logan Bitikofer scored his first career rushing touchdown on a one-yard quarterback keeper.
In total, the Bison defense forced three turnovers during the second quarter. First, Brice Sydnor picked off a pass in the end zone to halt a promising Villanova drive. Then came Colantuono's clutch recovery in the red zone. Finally, Matt Robinson forced a fumble, which was recovered by Roger Mellado, a play after Bednarczyk found McGrigg for a 48-yard gain to the Bucknell 16. But, one play later, a Bitikofer pass was intercepted by Jaquan Amos and returned to the one-yard line; Aaron Forbes ran for his second touchdown one play later to make it a 35-7 game. The Wildcats covered 86 yards in seven plays, five of which were passes for at least 10 yards, to extend their lead to 42-7 entering the locker room. A two-yard quarterback keeper by Bednarczyk capped that drive with 16 seconds left in the half.
At the half, Villanova held a 434-61 lead in total offense. Bednarczyk had 266 yards on just nine passes, five of which went to McGrigg for 187 yards. In addition, four Wildcats had at least 35 yards on the ground. Bucknell only allowed 400 yards once in 2017, in a 35-13 loss to FCS Championship participant Monmouth. Villanova, which pulled Bednarczyk early in the third quarter, completed the game's scoring at the 14:56 mark of the fourth quarter. A four-yard touchdown rush by D'Andre Pollard capped a 10-play, 40-yard drive. In the dying minutes of the game, the Bison had an opportunity to find the end zone once again. After Simeon Page and Sam Chitty combined for a sack on 4th and 9, Bucknell took over at its 39 with 4:48 on the clock. Bitikofer led the Bison to the Wildcat 12, most notably finding Stefone Moore-Greene for 29 yards on three-straight passes. But the Bison came up just short of a first down on 4th and 11 at the Villanova 13, with Bitikofer connecting with Dominic Lyles for only eight yards.
For the Bison, Bitikofer completed 11 of 24 passes for 87 yards. Moore-Green's 29 receiving yards, all of which came in succession in the fourth quarter, led the team. Jared Cooper paced Bucknell with 28 yards on the ground. Defensively, Conner Romango led the Bison with a career-best 12 tackles (nine solo) while Chitty was next with a career-best 11 (six solo). Page posted a team-best 1.5 sacks and three tackles for a loss; he now has 11.5 career sacks, placing him five away from entering Bucknell's career top 10 with 16.5.
Preseason All-American Alex Pechin had a sensational game, averaging a career-high 51 yards on nine punts. He landed four inside the 20 and had five sail for at least 50 yards, including a career-long 71-yard bomb that pinned Villanova at its two-yard line. That 71-yard punt was Bucknell's first of at least 70 yards since Ryan Gutowski booted a 71-yard bomb against Lehigh on Oct. 8, 2011; Pechin and Gutowski's 71-yard punts are now tied for third in school history behind two punts of more than 80 yards that occurred before 1985. The Wildcats finished with a 609-128 advantage in total offense; they had near equal totals of rushing (302) and receiving (307) yards. Bednarczyk completed 11 of 17 passes for 281 yards while McGrigg finished with 187 yards. Six Wildcats rushed for at least 30 yards, led by Matt Gudzak with 60. In addition, Villanova posted 28 first downs while holding Bucknell to eight.
Entering the game, the Wildcats ranked in the FCS's top 30 in passing efficiency (18th, 163.53), rushing defense (19th, 95.3), time of possession (20th, 32:31), total defense (23rd, 318.3) and passing offense (26th, 286.0). They were averaging 433.3 yards of total offense per game, a figure that stood 32nd in the FCS. Bednarczyk had thrown for 858 yards in Villanova's first three games, a total good for 12th nationally.
The Bison, now 0-4, begin Patriot League play next Saturday at Holy Cross.
[NOTE: It seems to me that Bucknell had the type of game against Villanova that HC had against Dartmouth. I had also not been aware that the Bison punter was named as a pre-season All-American.]

In the stat department we can see this from the first 4 games: Yards rushing 417 (2.3 yards per attempt) [HC 477 yards - 3.1 yards per attempt] Yards passing 484 (7.7 yards per completion) [HC 667 - 10.1 yards per completion] Completed passes 9 of 130 (with 7 interceptions) [ HC 66 of 108 - with 8 interceptions] Punts = 33 for 1417 (38.9 yards per punt) [HC 31 for 1139 - 36.7 yards per punt]

Ranking of Opponents: Bucknell's opp. (Villanova 9 / Penn 37 / William & Mary 55 / Sacred Heart 64) 41.25 avg. HOLY CROSS opp. (Colgate 24 / BC* 39 / Yale 38 / Dartmouth 20) 30.25 avg. Not much doubt that HC has played the harder schedule.

Quite a blowout (4 TD's in just 12 plays from scrimmage in the first quarter [!] ) that could have been much worse since Villanova mercifully "pulled [QB]Bednarczyk early in the third quarter".
Bucknell does seem awful this year based on the 4 games they have played.

You’re wrong. Bucknell is terrible and so are we if we lose to them. Scores don’t lie, laf, Fordham, buck and gtown are all lousy football teams. The PL has not developed more than 2 consistently decent teams since schollies were introduced- Colgate and Lehigh

I would like to see the staff get Derek Mountain more involved in the passing game. Was surprised at his burst in splitting the defenders on that TD - for a second I thought I was watching Gronk. Seems like someone that could be an option on 1st down to get 7-8 yards (to make it easier to move the chains). It would also be nice to start more drives from the 35-40 yard line.

Amen, brother--I, too, was really surprised at his speed. We're not going to the tight end very often this season-to-date. It seems there are some years when we make big use of the position for pass catching and others where the TE's catch very few passes. Whether that's due to the personnel on the field or to the play calling I can't say for certain. Here are our stats for tight ends going back 10 years YEAR= Receptions/Yards Gained/Touchdowns by HC Tight Ends 2008= 30/343/4 all by Ryan McGuire 2009= 36/324/7 Alex Schneider a great target 2010= 37/287/1 Schneider the leader again with 30 receptions 2011= 32/387/3 Schneider and Josh Hauser split the catches. I remember thinking Schneider would get 50 after 33 and 30 the two prior years 2012= 17/166/2 Schneider's senior year 2013= 0/0/0 I'll receheck things, but I saw no receptions for O'Dwyer, Deily, Lewis, Librizzi, McGuire, and Nikolaisen, the listed tight ends 2014= 12/106/0 all by Lukas Nikolaisen 2015= 17/165/3 2016= 34/252/3 with Nikolaisen becoming as productive as Schneider was. I included Teddy Capsis's TD reception with the tight ends 2017= 24/190/2 spilt between Jayke Simsheuser and Derek Mountain 2018= 2/72/1 Both receptions by Derek Mountain

He definitely did something to it; noticed him favoring it as he came off the field. However, in a subsequent series he was back on the field.

There have been some changes in the two-deep. In the Dartmouth game we saw Rory Costello (#67, starting RG) get injured and leave the field--I asked if he returned but did not pay enough attention to check for #67 on my own. I am guessing he is injured as we see some changes in the OL two deep
Left Guard Dartmouth Game: Boddy and Olsofka Bucknell Game: Boddy and Brekke as Olsofka moves to Right Guard
Center Dartmouth Game: Bowler and Daurelle Bucknell Game: Daurelle and FitzGerald as Bowler moves to right guard

Huge game, big opportunity to get back on track. Not a gimme, but certainly a winnable game. Get this one, get back to 1-1 in the league and see what happens.

Looks like they are moving Bowler back to G and Daurelle to C. Looks like Foley back in to LT and Brekke back to back up Guard? Hopefully will churn some things up. A really solid win hopefully gets things headed into a positive direction before they have to go up to UNH.

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell football team begins Patriot League action at Holy Cross on Saturday, Sept. 29. The Bison, who have won the past two meetings at Fitton Field, will face the Crusaders at 1:05 p.m.
When: Saturday, September 29 – 1:05 p.m. Where: Fitton Field – Worcester, Mass. Internet Video: Patriot League Network Live Stats: GoHolyCross.com With a victory the Bison would... • improve to 19-14 in Patriot League openers • move to 3-2 in their past five Patriot League openers • run their winning streak over Holy Cross at Fitton Field to three games [MY NOTE: Clearly HC Needs to do better against the Bison AT HOME.]
Bucknell at a Glance • The Bison are currently 0-4 (0-0 Patriot League) on the season. This is only the fourth time the Bison have started 0-4 in program history; they previously started 0-6 in both 1958 and 1988 and 0-5 in 2010. •Bucknell finished 2017 with a 5-6 (2-4 PL) record. The Bison, who took sixth in the Patriot League a year ago, were chosen to tie for fifth with Lafayette in the 2018 preseason poll, as voted on by the league's coaches and sports information directors. • Bucknell returned a total of 41 letterwinners in 2018. That group includes 14 seniors, 17 juniors and 10 sophomores. Eight seniors—WR Alan Butler, DL Alex Jordan, S Joe Lauro, CB Bryan Marine, CB Fisayo Oluleye, TE/FB Andrew Owers, P Alex Pechin and LB Matt Robinson—are three-time letterwinners. • OL Pat Finn, Lauro, Marine and Pechin are serving as team captains in 2018. • The Bison have led the Patriot League in total defense six of the past seven seasons, including five years in a row from 2011 to 2015. In 2017, they finished fourth nationally in passing defense (148.3) and 11th in total defense (294.6). • Bucknell is currently tied with Eastern Kentucky (OVC), Morgan State (MEAC) Northern Arizona (Big Sky) and Weber State (Big Sky) for the NCAA FCS lead with 12 turnovers gained on seven fumble recoveries and five interceptions. [NOTE: HC will need to HOLD ONTO THE BALL. HC should take this, but turnovers - fumbles and interceptions could change that quickly.] • QB John Chiarolanzio started the first three games and has thrown for 247 yards while QB Logan Bitikofer has thrown for 237 yards in his two appearances, one of which was his first career start at No. 14/15 Villanova. Freshman RB Jared Cooper is the team leader in both rushing (204) and receiving (104) yards. • Through four games, three Bison have made at least 30 tackles: Lauro (35), Marine (34) and LB Sam Chitty (30). Chitty is the team leader with 6.0 tackles for a loss.
Inside the Villanova Box Score • No. 14/15 Villanova downed Bucknell, 49-7. During the first quarter, the high-powered Wildcats stormed out to a 28-0 lead. They needed just 12 offensive plays to score their four touchdowns, three of which came on the ground and one of which was a school-record 90-yard bomb by QB Zach Bednarczyk to WR Josh McGrigg. • The Bison got on the board at the 7:56 mark of the second quarter, capitalizing on a fumble during a punt return. LB Ryan Brida forced the fumble, and LS Mike Colantuono came up with the ball at the Wildcat 12. Three plays later, QB Logan Bitikofer scored his first career rushing touchdown on a one-yard quarterback keeper. • The Bison forced four turnovers, including three in the second quarter alone. In addition to Colantuono's clutch fumble recovery, S Brice Sydnor picked off his first pass since his sophomore year while LBs Simeon Page and Matt Robinson forced fumbles that were recovered by CB Bryan Marine. • Marine doubled his career total with his two fumble recoveries a game after matching his career high with two interceptions at Penn. • S Conner Romango made a career-high 12 tackles in his first career start. He entered the game with two career tackles, both of which came against Sacred Heart on Sept. 8, 2018. • P Alex Pechin's career-high 51.0 punting average was one yard shy of Bucknell's school record, which was set in 1962. Of his nine punts, four landed inside the 20 and five sailed for at least 50 yards. • Pechin's 71-yard bomb that pinned the Wildcats at their two-yard line during the fourth quarter is tied for the third-longest punt in school history. It is also tied for the longest punt by an NCAA FCS punter this season. • Villanova held advantages in total offense (609-128), first downs (28-8) and time of possession (37:10-22:50). At the half, the Wildcats were up, 434-61, in total offense.
Holy Cross at a Glance • The Crusaders are currently 1-3 (0-1 Patriot League) on the season. Their lone victory came in dramatic fashion; on Sept. 15, they downed defending Ivy League champion Yale, 31-28, in overtime after roaring back from a 21-0 first-quarter deficit. • Holy Cross was selected to finish fourth in the 2018 Patriot League preseason poll. • LB Ryan Brady leads the FCS in tackles (57) and is tied for seventh in tackles for a loss (10); he stands second in tackles per game (14.3) and tied for 13th in tackles for a loss per game (2.0). • QB Geoff Wade has completed 43 of 69 passes for 465 yards and four touchdowns while RB Miles Alexander has added 174 rushing yards and a score. • Brady, WR Blaise Bell and DL Teddy Capsis were the Crusaders' 2018 Preseason All-Patriot League selections. • First-year head coach Bob Chesney has many ties to Pennsylvania. A native of Kulpmont, he attended Our Lady of Lourdes Regional School. He then graduated in 2000 from Dickinson College (Carlisle), where he was a two-time Second Team All-Centennial Conference defensive back. He also held coaching positions at King's College (Wilkes-Barre) and Delaware Valley College (Doylestown). His father, also named Bob, was the head football coach at Mount Carmel Area High School and Shamokin Area High School.
The Bucknell/Holy Cross Series • Bucknell and Holy Cross first met on Oct. 31, 1925, with the Crusaders emerging a 23-7 victor in Worcester, Mass. • The Crusaders and Bison have squared off annually since 1986, the year the Patriot League was founded as the Colonial League. • Between 1925 and 1986, Bucknell and Holy Cross met only once: in 1953. • The Crusaders lead the series, 22-12, and hold a 13-5 edge on their home turf. • Bucknell has won two of the past four games. The Bison took the 2014 (31-24 OT) and 2016 (21-20) meetings, both of which occurred at Fitton Field. • This is the third-straight season the Bison will open Patriot League play against the Crusaders. • Last year, Bucknell and Holy Cross faced off in September for the first time. Previously, the earliest date they had played was Oct. 6 (2012). They have squared off 20 times in November and 13 times in October.
The Last Meeting with the Crusaders Holy Cross 20 – Bucknell 0 (Sept. 9, 2017 – Lewisburg, Pa.) • Holy Cross toppled Bucknell, 20-0, in the Patriot League opener for both teams at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. • After recovering a fumble on the opening kickoff, the Crusaders started their drive on the Bison 22. While they took three penalties on that drive, which pushed them back to the Bucknell 32, QB Peter Pujals connected with WR Richie DeNicola for a 30-yard gain that set up RB Diquan Walker for his first of two touchdown rushes. • The Bison limited Pujals, who threw for 358 yards and one touchdown against FBS foe UConn on Aug. 28, to 178 yards and no touchdowns. • For the second-straight game, Bucknell held its opponent to 20 or fewer points and 200 or less passing yards. • S Aaron Brown and S Jon Fox each hauled in his first career interception. • S Joe Lauro led the Bison defense with eight tackles (five solo) while S Chanse Riley was close behind with a then career-best seven (two solo). • QB Matt Muh totaled 138 yards on 22-for-39 passing. • The Crusaders scored 13 of their 20 points off of turnovers. • Before this game, Bucknell last suffered a shutout on Sept. 28, 2013, a 16-0 loss to Sacred Heart. • The Bison held a slim 30:48 to 29:12 advantage in time of possession. They were bolstered by a 9:37 fourth quarter drive that covered 71 yards in 18 plays. • This game marked the first time since 2012 Bucknell began Patriot League play in September. It was also the second time the Bison had their Patriot League opener on Sept. 9, which is the second earliest date they have kicked off league action.
Patriot League Openers • Bucknell holds an 18-14 record in Patriot League openers. • In 2017, the Bison fell to the Crusaders, 20-0, in their first Patriot League game. • Bucknell has met Holy Cross in its Patriot League opener four times: 2017 (0-20), 2016 (21-20), 1996 (38-7) and 1992 (12-27). • The Bison are starting Patriot League play in September for the second year in a row.

Head Coach Joe Susan • Joe Susan, the 26th head coach in program history, is in his ninth season at the helm and currently ranks third in career games (92) and tied for sixth in career victories (37). • Sept. 8's contest with Sacred Heart was Susan's 100th career game. Before his time at Bucknell, he was the head coach at Davidson in 2000; that season, he led the Wildcats to a 10-0 mark, a school record for wins in a season. • Susan tied Bob Odell, who coached the Bison from 1958 to 1964 and was enshrined in the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame in 1987, for sixth in career wins with Bucknell's Senior Day shutout of Georgetown on Nov. 11, 2017. • At the conclusion of the 2017 campaign, Susan took sole possession of fourth place in career seasons, passing legendary coaches Odell and Tom Gadd.
Inside the 2018 Schedule • This is the 133rd season of football at Bucknell. At least they're not superstitious. We won with white pants/purple jerseys against Yale, surprised they aren't going to wear white against Bucknell.

Baseball field closed tomorrow again. Why? Forecast calls for sun. Rain is just ending here in the Worcester area.... According to my rain gauge we have had nearly 4 inches (3.86 to be exact) since Tuesday!

Baseball field closed tomorrow again. Why? Forecast calls for sun. Completely messes up Tailgating, but it has been really wet here. Too much risk of damage to outfield. Last week was a nice day too. We were stuck at HoJo's and that field was in pretty rough shape. Not sure my old car would have made it through some of those ruts
