Unfortunately, I will be on a plane half way to the west coast for business when the coaches start speaking. Enjoy and take good notes. I look forward to reading the reports when I get to the hotel around 11:00 PM eastern!

I really enjoyed the interview broadcast during half-time of the Lehigh game--as others have noted, the coach seemed outwardly optimistic and he has usually played things close to the vest. I think he feels as some of us do, that this sophomore class is a special one.

With respect to Perkins, rumor has it that he has confirmed on campus that he is done.. Yes I am spreading a rumor, but clearly labeling it as a rumor
On the website, he is listed as being on the roster, but is the only player not dressed in the team photo. He also is not in the photo with Cousy. Although nothing has been officially published, it's pretty safe to say that he's done

One last reminder for any central New Englanders looking for an HC fix before the Pats

3 others also recognizable to me as well. One classmate/Crossports lurker and 2 others who I am not sure are in Crossports.
Can hardly wait for the report back from those who attended.

Some real quick hitters (others will need to fill in all the blanks)....
*Coach still coming across more positive than what has been the norm (I think the others I spoke to agreed with this)
*Was lukewarm on the UMass-Lowell scrimmage; thought they played much better all around against Fairfield
*Once again he didn't think all that much about my question, which was: "with all the guys a year older, can we perhaps expect a few more wrinkles on the defensive end?" I think his initial response what something like "well, what do you want us to do"?....then, after a semi sneer, did actually say they fooled around a bit at the scrimmage with some m2m, and it went pretty well. Don't expect many changes.
*When asked about who he thought had made the most progress since the end of last year, his immediate response was Kyle Copeland. He said he may be the best shooter on the team at this moment, mentioned his athleticism. Said the only issue was sometimes they have to slow him down a bit. Also think he mentioned Faw in terms of improvement.
*Pointed towards JF as being the kingpin, of course. Mentioned his intelligence on the court more than once, said he made players around him better.
*As far as the league, he expects it to be "the usual suspects" until someone proves otherwise (Bucknell, Lehigh, BU and Colgate were mentioned). Does not expect Bucknell to fall very far due to their winning culture.
*He had a couple of funny exchanges with DiMarz and HCFC45. I'll let them tell their stories.
All in all, he seems pretty excited for the season. We shall see soon!

Thanks, NAD - great report.
Holy Cross went man-to-man for a handful of possessions in a number of games last year, including each game in the tournament. Thought they looked pretty good at it, and hope to see more of it this season.

Think Copeland may also be somebody who can run the baseline in the 1-3-1.

I asked Coach if JF had extended his range to be able to make an occasional shot from the free throw line, as his defender often just sits at home under the hoop..Coach looked at me and said "Why?" He went on to explain how he wants JF to put the ball on the floor to the wing, and run a dribble hand-off to a shooter, who will come off his screen, with nobody to pick him up, wide open for a 15' jumper..Coach was animated, demonstrating what he wanted JF to do...He was in a jovial mood tonight...Up beat...
I also asked how the players reacted to Bob Cousy's talk the other night..He said the players were very impressed...He also said he is confident in Hargis, that he rebounds on the offensive glass...

Great to hear about Kyle's improvement. Met him and his Mom on Move-In Day last year and was impressed with him as a person. His Mom is a single retired military and they are obviously close and Kyle was very polite and you could tell he was brought up right. He was so excited to be at Holy Cross. However he does on the court, he will be a credit to Holy Cross.

Coach also mentioned the first scrimmage was "OK". The second vs Fairfield was much better..Gibbons mentioned he saw part of the 2nd scrimmage and was very impressed with what he saw....Lots of positives tonight!

Don't expect many changes. Well, you could have responded to his rhetorical question "What do you want us to do" by saying..."Do whatever it takes to Win." Sure that is sarcastic but you could avoid the semi-sneer. ["Cute" responses by coaches to serious questions I find a bit demeaning to he questioner. Just a pet peeve of mine. ]

Yes, I did ask the question in the following way.... CBC was talking about each of the players and said it all starts with JF and how important he will be to this team this year. He mentioned the freshmen MH (no, Mat Husek is not starting over !) and seemed to be pleased with what he has seen of him so far. Said he was about 6' 7", can shoot and rebound! After hearing "rebound" a couple of times, I ask him if this means that we will put more emphasis on "offensive rebounding" this year? While I cannot quote word for word what he said, I got the feeling that it's not one of his top priorities. Dimarz did say he mentioned "offensive" rebounding, but I recall him only using the word "rebounding". Was a good night with the "usual suspects" there. Far different from last year when his comments about the team with so many freshmen centered on "basketballs flying around everywhere off the walls". This year he commented about people saying that you have everyone back to which he answered "but we lost 19 games"! He talked about his players being "gym rats" and he likes that! Overall, in his own way, he seemed quietly upbeat! I know KC got some minutes later in the season, but coach really seemed high on him, can shoot (one of the shooters on the team) and rebound. Don't know if this is mentioned elsewhere, but CBG said that Bob Fouracre's career (radio/TV) with HC has come to an end. Based upon his doctor's recommendation he will not be doing any women BB games this year, not even the home games. He said he will attend some games but not announcing them. Think he said it is the culmination of a 58 year career! Congrats to Bob for all your efforts and hard work!

My interpretation of the man to man comment was that sometimes he runs it in practice so the offense can prepare for it. However, it looks pretty good in practice so you never know
When asked about the freshmen, he mentioned Hargis, Verbeek, and the walk-ons. My read on that is Lovisolo, Yeutter, and Hart will not be seeing meaningful minutes.
Even though he's really skinny, Verbeek doesn't play afraid

Carmody speaks pretty softly and he didn't want to use the mic, but he made several comments about Copeland and if I heard correctly he was impressed with his shooting so far. I got the impression Copeland will see more time this year. He also likes his energy although at times he tries to do too much.

He also praised PB's work ethic, and mentioned how he won Coach over after not being eager to play him his freshman year.
I also got the impression CBC is very proud of the way JF has developed both on and off the court during hi time at HC (anyone else get the same vibe?)

Marcellis Perkins deserves a lot of credit for JF's off-court development - a somewhat intangible, but nonetheless real, contribution to the team.
