Just saw that one of the treasures of HC in the field of journalism, Dave Anderson passed away today at 89

May he rest in peace. His son Steve lived on my floor in Wheeler--nice guy who played a little basketball and went on to considerable success at ESPN--must have made his very accomplished father proud.

May he rest in peace. He outlived the Crusader for which he wrote.

Lots of fond memories posted by other members of the NY sports media on Twitter today about Mr. Anderson.

Here is one that shows the strong connection that HC grads share.

Mr Anderson was a subject on ESPN tonight on one of those shows where two pundits in turn opine on a variety of topics. I was in a bar and sound was muted so I can’t report on the comments

My dad ('50) was on the staff of the paper when Dave was the assistant Sports editor and knew him a bit and always spoke highly of him. When in high school, an HC classmate of mine was considering a career in journalism and possibly sports journalism. He was the son of a long time friend of the family and my dad may have had a hand in connecting him with Dave Anderson. I believe Dave Anderson advised him to get the best liberal arts education he could as that would make him a better writer and reporter than any journalism curriculum. That, in part, is what led Jim to Holy Cross and he has been a reporter - albeit not a sports reporter - since graduating. A long, long line of distinguished writers, especially sports journalists, came from the ranks of " The Crusader." Easy there 1970. Dave graduated in 1951. He wrote for The Tomahawk not The Crusader.

Read my post carefully. I did not say Anderson wrote for The Crusader. I said: "A long, long line of distinguished writers, especially sports journalists, came from the ranks of "The Crusader." I have others in mind, one closer and within my family, though Anderson was pretty good too.

I liked the Steinbrenner sandwich story. Couldn't you just picture that somehow being an episode on Seinfeld?
