Maybe he'll be known someday as the greatest late bloomer in HC hoop history! Interesting off-season topic. Who else is on this list (late bloomers)?

He was the first one I thought of, too. He went from irrelevant to invaluable 6th man in one year's time. It was a very big jump. Tim Clifford had a monster senior year, but his blooming process was fairly steady over a four-year time period. He was a very solid contributor on a strong team. If not for health, I (we) will always wonder what the true ceiling would have been for Alex Vander Baan. He was on the cusp of transforming into a star before that Ohio game and subsequent ill-fated trip to USF.

Nice interview. Hard to believe that the writer said Holy Cross was the team where Tom Heinsohn played, but never mentioned Bob Cousy.

How old is the writer? I am not a Celtics fan but if I am not mistaken Tommy has (continues, maybe?) to do color commentary for Celtics games while Mr. Basketball supports his old team more from a distance. As such, Tommy may be easier to remember for the younger generation.

Most likely. When do we see his statue in place at the Hart? It could be a fitting addition.

As such, Tommy may be easier to remember for the younger generation. Tommy still does commentary for the Celts, though he does not travel to road games as frequently as he did in his younger days. I ran into Tommy at a bar in Newton, MA a few weeks ago and he was cordial and unassuming. He was talking to another patron about an art show he was putting on in New Hampshire and that he had been painting for many years. When he first walked in, it was a dark bar, and the sun shone in brightly when the door opened, I took HC hat off the bar and put it on my knee. My friend, who was my college roommate, said "are you sure you want to take that off"? And I said "why not", and he replied, "turn to your left", and Tommy was sitting right there, two stools down. We chatted a bit, he said he had just been at his 60th HC reunion, that he had met Coach Carmody and was impressed by him, and complained about a few calls in the Sox game.

In a 71-62 loss yesterday that set the game back about 50 years, Malcolm had 4 points and 0 rebounds in 16 minutes. The Celts scored more than 12 points in only one quarter. They are on ESPN2 tonight (9:30?) against the Suns.

$25,000 cap is pathetic for the D league. Hopefully it functions as a tryout for a foreign league that pays something for the many players who wont make the NBA

Watched the game yesterday. Not one of Malcolm's best but neither was it the Celtics' best. Bulls had a huge (as opposed to tall) line-up and totally dominated the boards. MM did not embarrass himself but his shot was decidedly off. At one point, announcers observed that a 210 lb defender (MM) was up against a 250 lb offensive player (Bulls'). To his credit, later in the game believe it was the same Bulls player or his teammate at 280 lbs was heading straight for the basket on a breakaway and MM stood in front of him at about the foul line; stood his ground; and forced him to pass the ball.
If this is the worst Malcolm does this summer, he will have a bright future.

excellent article that any nba fan should read. i agree with ky, this is a pathetic situation. until things change with the nba d-league, i question why anyone would want to play in this league with the exception of those who are right on the cusp of being called up to the nba at any time. contrast the $25k exploitation with big pat whearty's professional basketball experience. i won't delve into details, but he made enough money playing in france (especially) and japan to set up a degree of financial security for the rest of his life while playing basketball at a very high level against some great players. interestingly, pat made one shot - a 3 pointer as time expired - to elevate his french team to a promotion in league that in one second made him 4 or 5 years worth of nba d-league salary! while i don't know keith simmons personally, i imagine he has had a similar experience in his long pro career in turkey. the nba d-league really needs to change its policy. i hope it pays off for malcolm with an nba career, but if not, i also hope he will go to europe soon and makes a great living on the game while he still can. he's a good player and person who deserves better than what the d-league offers.

Minor league baseball is pretty bad in the $ regard as well, save for those individuals playing "down on the farm" that are lucky enough to have major league contracts.

I don't know what Malcolm is thinking but I would guess he hangs on in the D-League for no more than the coming season. If he can't find a spot in the real league, he could go to Europe. He is certainly better known to NBA teams now than if he had gone straight to Europe but, at some point, he needs to get paid.

MM sets good picks, dishes. But did not shoot well. Seems reluctant to go to the rim. Seems to lack some aggressiveness on offense, same as when he was at HC.
