Multiple internet social media posts report Tony Hanson died of a heart attack at 63. One of the best hoop players at UConn in the pre-Calhoun era, he led the Huskies in a win over HC in what was HC’s first loss at the Hart Center. Tony went to Holy Cross HS in Waterbury and was coached by HC grad, Tim McDonald. Spend most of next years playing and coaching in England, but returned to the US a few years ago. He was a few years ahead of me in HS and a good guy! RIP

He averaged 26 points and 10.5 rebounds as a senior in Storrs and was always known as a good guy. Too bad.

He was an outstanding talent. We talked about him a lot as one of our toughest opponents
I recall that UConn in those years had a 6-4 center--think his name was John Thomas, and we were amazed that such a short player could be a center, but he was not bad as I recall. EDIT: Just checked sports-reference and see Thomas listed at 6-8; he was 6-4

Tony Hanson was one tough competitor with whom we had many great games in the mid 70's. Sadly a number of the players who made that era in New England basketball so great passed early, the great UMass backcourt Eldridge and Claiborne, Soup Cambell and Billy Eason from PC, and BC's Billy Collins.

Reading about Tony Hanson who spent a long time coaching in England made me think about another UConn star of that era, Joey Whelton, who has coached in England and elsewhere over the years. A quick search reveals that he has a son, Matteo, who is at Phillips Andover and has reclassified to the class of 2020. He is a bigger guard than his father and lacks the 70's hair that his dad was always brushing out of his face, but Matteo appears to be pretty good and at least one somewhat dated report has him interested in Ivy's and PL schools including HC. There is no indication that the interest goes both ways. www.prephoops.com/2017/01/prospect-spotlight-matteo-whelton-2019/
