XXX,
I hope this email finds you well and enjoying the beginning of the holiday season.
I would like to take a moment to thank you for your support this season. Your commitment to YOUR program is very much appreciated and very much needed. This program has been able to count on your help each and every year to continually improve our team, and this year, I hope you will consider helping us take our team to an unprecedented level of giving.
More importantly, I want to thank you for standing by us throughout this season. The last time I wrote, we were 1-6 and I assured you that We Will Win. Going 4-0 in the final four games is something that we are very proud of, but a final record of 5-6 is unacceptable and we will do everything in our power to change this in the very near future.
This past season was both challenging and rewarding. From our first win against Yale, which had never been done before on Fitton Field, to our last win against Georgetown, which was the largest comeback in school history, to our final four-game winning streak, which had not been done since 2009, there is much to celebrate. There are also a few games and MANY plays that we would like to have back. We still have a LONG way to go, but our team’s energy and effort were never in question.
During some of the more difficult moments of the year, I would remind myself that we graduated 27 seniors, three of whom went on to NFL camps and one who is playing in the SEC. Although it took longer than any of us expected, we stayed the course and overcame voids left by those seniors, playing more and more like a TEAM each and every week.
I especially appreciate the words of Denny Golden '63 P89, who, during our meeting in Charlotte, stated, “I do not stand behind our team, I stand WITH them.” Denny’s sentiments and many of our other alumni voices replayed in the minds of our team and our staff when we needed them the most.
Another great confidant who offered support was Prof. John Axelson. When I first arrived at Holy Cross, John and I had many meaningful conversations, and one such conversation centered around body language. John is a professor of psychology and can get a deep understanding of our team’s mental state by reading the players’ body language. This became a focus of our staff during challenging times throughout practices and games, and I am sure that John helped us in more ways than he could imagine. We must continue to improve on this in EVERYTHING that we do, on and off the field.
The great Rocky Balboa said that “every champion was once a contender that refused to give up.” Giving up was NEVER an option for this team despite all of the challenges we faced. We fought until the end, and I believe much of that started during the Boston College game. When we were down and unable to produce in all three phases, Anthony DiMichele and I took a minute to take inventory of our team’s attitude and the overall environment on our sideline. We lost a few players and were down by a healthy margin but no one hung his head. When I looked to the stands, I gained great strength from what I saw. Very little maroon remained in the stadium that day, but the Purple was overwhelmingly present! We need each and every one of you who were there that day to be present in those numbers much more often. There is strength in numbers and we need you all!
In closing, momentum plays a critical role in any program’s rebirth. In each of my last stops, we witnessed unprecedented positive momentum gains after each new season, which, in turn, led to positive outcomes in recruiting and on the field. We are close, but we need you now more than ever. Spread the word, be present and consider giving back in a way that you never have before.
There are big things on the horizon, and we are all excited to build YOUR team up to where it belongs.
Be present if you can. Critique if you must. Never stop believing.
