Was at my great grandmothers house the other day and I found a Worcester Telegram paper from 1963 talking about the Holy Cross basketball sophomore class. They went 15-8 that year. Beating BC and Umass twice also Western Michigan and Georgetown. Attachment Deleted

IIRC, under NCAA rules at that time, freshmen were not rostered on the varsity. If my recollection is correct, that year would have been the first year of varsity hoops for the sophomores.

Several sophomores are among the best players on the current Holy Cross team.

To me this class of 6 most resembles the class of '93. That class had Farkes, Breslin, Mashburn, Powell and Walker. That class was fun to watch and had great careers. I believe 3 1,000 point scorers. Just hit a tough draw in '93 when they got Arkansas in the first round in a 4/13 game.

That class of ‘63 sophs produced only one consistent starter, 999 Richie Murphy(R.I.P.). Greg Hochstein, Johnny Hayes, Tom Mounkhall and Sullivan were mostly bench players. The best class of that era was Siudut, Texeira, Gerry Foley, Mullane and Moore- the class of ‘69

69 class was probably most disappointing of all time Siudit was great but Tex only played one year and the other 3 were not impact players.

This current class of sophomores, in addition to pursuing conference championships, is on track to produce 3 or 4 or possibly even 5 1,000 point scorers. We understand that many factors, anticipated or unforeseen, can intervene, (injuries, academic issues, supersession by Wade, Lowder, Pridgen, Hargis) but here's how the oddsmaker would set the line for the class
Jacob Grandison- 542 points scored in 49 games. Needs to average 6 points a game for balance of career. Don't see anyone taking his minutes: 1-5 odds
Austin Butler- 523 points in 48 games. Needs to average 6 points per game for balance of career. Teammates will vie for more time, but he brings so much to the table. 2-5 odds
Caleb Green- 491 points in 49 games. Needs to average 6 points per game for balance of career. Talent coming onto the team, but this guy is special. 1-5 odds
Matt Faw- 267 points in 49 games. Needs to average 9 points per game for balance of career. Great shooter will assume new role with JF graduation. 7-5 odds
Connor Niego- 119 points in 32 games. Needs to average 11 PPG. Injured now. Talented player the team needs on the court. Could become a big scorer but 12-1 odds
Kyle Copeland--30 points in 29 games. Many thought he'd see more action this year but injuries/other factors have prevented a breakthrough. 30-1 odds.

I can think of a couple of fairly recent guys whom I thought were practically guaranteed to hit 1000. I was wrong (897 and 713)

Let's not forget that the '69 class could not play varsity their freshmen year and achieving 1,000 points was a lot harder with one less year of eligibility and also no 3 point arc (think Siudut).

Fewer games in the regular season, no postseason tourney games. Kids today can play in the neighborhood of 120 games in their career and score 1,000 points by averaging about 8.5 ppl. Not the gold standard it once was.

Right you are, but I'll say it is 1,000 points more than I scored at Holy Cross
