The statement said BG is suspended for the rest of the BB season. Jen Tolland reported his contract is up in June. Does this mean he becomes head coach in March? Indeed, we can all connect the dots here, as to how this probably ends. But there's plenty of opportunity between now and the end of the fiscal year (when his contract would expire, according to Toland's report) for the school to issue a further statement, etc.
It's also not impossible that Toland's reporting on the contract is wrong. She just reported that the last extension he signed (2014 I think) runs through this 2019 seaspm. It seems a little odd that he was coaching this season as a lame duck. It's possible he has an extension in hand that hadn't been announced publicly yet. That, obviously, would change the calculus here.

Based on performance, I would not have been in favor of a new multi year contract for BG. Based on performance during the first and so far during the second absence of BG, I am enthused by the performance of AM and hope she gets full consideration. I am curious why BG couldn't just be dismissed like coaches are all the time and why the knife had to be twisted with the disclosure of an internal investigation over a personnel matter.

Wonder if Pine had anything to do with this matter- could it have been something that's been under investigation for a while?

I have no idea what happened with Bill Gibbons. ZERO. But the reality is we’re living in a changed and evolving time.
In the Me Too era, with the Catholic Church’s institutional shuffling of predators, no organization, much less a Catholic one, can afford to
1. Ignore or take superficial action when a person in a position of authority is accused of violating institutional norms regardless of how “normal” or “innocuous” those actions may have seemed 10 years ago. For example physically grabbing a player by the shoulders and pushing them to where you want them to be may no longer be acceptable behavior for a coach.
2. If the person in authority is found to have violated the institutional norms, it is extraordinarily difficult to return them to their prior position - ministry if you are talking about the Church.
3. There is no statute of limitation on the public perception of action (or inaction) of the organization.
BGs suspension may or may not seem to be a fair penalty for whatever happened, but It’s the reality we are living.
The pendulum has swung very quickly to believe accusers. It is, in part, why the Jesuits and many Diocese are realeasing the names of “credibly accused” priests. Innocent until proven guilty applies in the court room. Credible allegation is enough for the board room to take action.

BTW - there are any number of other personnel matters that have NOTHING to do with BGs interaction with players and coaches that could have led to the suspension. And it may have nothing to do with any kind of harassment/abuse of staff or players. We’re all assuming based on the past allegation that something like that is at play again. It may not have anything to do with it.

Thankfully Coach Gibbons has lots of support in the local community. Word on the street has people in the coffee shops, local radio and in the faith community “shaking their heads” and wondering what the heck is going on at Holy Cross. Obviously he has his detractors, but all of the support that he’s received helps now and going forward. Coach Mac and her family have a good support system too and local community support as well. If you live in CMass, this statement is 100% correct.

This situation makes one tip his cap, or hockey helmut to Coach Peter Van Buskirk. At 76 he has smoothly transitioned women's hockey from D-2/3 to D-1, from ECAC to non-league to HE, and hired and mentored his replacement during a graceful, planned transition to retirement. Congratulations Coach.

Coach gibbons is the best coach and I would like to know what the heck is going on. I BACK Coach GIBBONS 100%. How does one back someone when they don’t know what’s going on? As much as I believe BG is a great person, I don’t know the situation and he could very well be in the wrong if they went through these lengths to get him off the court.

Lengths? "You are suspended for the balance of the season." Current coaches move up a notch. That's not much of a "length" is it?

How does one NOT back someone until what happened has been officially revealed (by the school in this case), which it likely never will.

Everyone calm down. I’m not saying to NOT back him. I do believe is a good guy and most likely has done nothing wrong. All I’m saying is you can’t do no research and say you have no idea what’s going on and still 100% back someone??? And how is a suspension not a length? If it wasn’t a big deal we wouldn’t even be having this conversation.

I have heard the legal expression "innocent until prove guilty." An action with no explanation IMO is not "proof" of guilt. There is plenty of reason for folks to be in either camp right now. I can certainly respect those who hold either opinion.
PS: If someone has my unqualified support, that would be 100%. Even when I oppose an action, I can still support the person.
PPS: Since you ask, I have seen suspensions for some pretty trivial things (look at the NCAA track record on that). The statement takes seconds to say and while it is "a length," the full statement was "went through these lengths to get him off the court." That sounds like a statement that is unjustified at this time from what is known.

Or turning your flimsy argument around, it's not like Gibbons has been on campus for five minutes. It seems more likely to me that the decision to take a significant action against a highly-regarded, 30+ year employee was probably not taken lightly.
As stated above, I have zero idea what happened here. But I don't at all buy the idea that he "most likely has done nothing wrong". The school has completed an investigation and decided that this suspension was warranted as a *result* of that investigation. This isn't a "we're going to suspend him for PR purposes/cover while we look into the facts of the matter". They have already done that, and decided he needed to be suspended.

I can understand why the College is not saying any more than they already have (see my prior post).
Why has BG not made any public statement, especially if he disagrees with the suspension? As others have posted and was in the initial announcement, this is not an ongoing investigation - it's completed - and the penalty was a suspension for the remainder of the season. If that is not factually accurate, I cannot think of anyone, especially not Bill Gibbons, that wouldn't correct the record and let it be known publicly that he was fighting the suspension through the internal process or legally.
This reinforces my belief that this is a fait accompli. I also believe that this was a "deal" between the College and BG. He stays employed, gets his salary and retains health and other benefits until his contract runs out and agrees not to fight the suspension and he can hope to start with a clean slate elsewhere.
For those who are surprised that his contract was not previously extended, the question would be "why"? He has not had a winning record since 2013-14 season. His record over the previous 4 seasons was 49-74 and 34-38 in the Patriot League.
I haven't a clue what he allegedly did but I am very sure it had nothing to do with sexual misconduct or the College would have stated this and possibly announced all the Title IX stuff Phreek posted.
BG is a very personable and nice guy, emotional, but nice. He will always have a place in Holy Cross women's basketball history and once was a great coach with great success. I wish him nothing but future success wherever that might be.

Given nobody has any verifiable information can we halt any more speculation. My experiences with him go back to the late 70s and I would say from those experiences he is a good man.
That said this is between Bill and the Administration and we should let it resolve itself unless we learn something that gives facts.

Hiring a local (Berube, assuming she likes this area) in place of a local might take some sting out of him departing in this manner.
All 3 persons mentioned there is also the possibility that none of them has to move....depends upon where they reside now. Wheaton, Tufts and Amherst are not that far from here.

Pretty good timing with the league schedule quiet this week until Saturday. Coach AM has some time to work with the team and maybe install some new schemes. IMO, we need some changes given the lackluster performance through 10 PL games.

Once of the more stupid comments I've heard on here. "Anyone who is content coaching D3 I wouldn't want as my coach". What exactly does that mean. There is nothing wrong with coaching at the D3 level. Obviously you don't have any respect for that level. I would rather win and compete for national championships at the D3 level then win the Patriot League and get your doors blown off every year in the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament. Just because someone chooses to coach in D3 for their career doesn't mean their unmotivated or any less capable of success.
