I think HC athletics is kind of in a pickle right now with this situation. They are not going to be able to hide behind the "personnel matter" if they want to attract a top-notch coaching prospect. Gibbons has a great reputation nationally and is generally well liked in the area and coaching circles. Coaches talk and I'm sure right now they are wondering what the heck is going on at Holy Cross. Who would want to come to a place that chucks their 600+ win coach to the curb? A coach who has done more for women's basketball and community relations than any HC coach in recent memory.
If this is a serious and egregious action by Coach Gibbons then they need to say what happened. My fear is that this is something that did not warrant this reaction by the school and was a giant over-reaction. Again these are just the opinions of one person but IMO the math doesn't add up.

Mostly agree coachrt. The D1 PL is a lot closer to the NESAC than it is to most other D1 conferences.

I would point out that NP fired two at least two coaches mid season--JL in lax and TG in football. Perhaps our interim is just following that lead. I don't understand it, but maybe that is all it is.

Doubtful this was Sullivan’s decision or wording

gks, just follow the other threads. Holy Cross does NOT overreact. If there is any issue historically, it is underreacting when it comes to personnel issues.
And don’t hold your breath about what actually happened unless Gibbons leaks his side of the story. Or if a presumed victim comes forward.
There are probably confidential agreements.

Doubtful this was Sullivan’s decision or wording Yes, there is no chance at all that this move was similar to Gilmore or Lattimore. I am pretty sure that the reason for removing him as coach has not been announced simply because BG does not want it public. Absent some sort of agreement, he is at liberty to say exactly what happened. OR to simply leak it to Jen Tolland.

I don't agree that the school is in a pickle - it's actually a pretty clean split (if that's what they want). 1) Contract has ended, 2) job performance has been sub-par for the last 10 years or so (and I don't think BG would disagree), 3) It's a perfect time to go out and get a coach to revive this program (preferably female if possible) and to gks "great reputation nationally"? (should read 'within the boundaries of Worcester')

One of his former players told me that he was a good coach but frequently gets way too hyper. I hope he is replaced now with a female who can recruit.

I still think the most ridiculous thing of all is that the College is not leading the discussion by releasing facts. Speculation can, and maybe even should, run wild in the wake of facts... so why are they always late, keeping their mouth shut, or playing mea culpa after the fact?

No argument there, ndgradbuthcfan. I once was president of a county women coaches association. [Yes, that was the title, women coaches not "women's coaches." The story behind that could fill a page...and most of the coaches were men. ] I was even the Woman Coach of the Year a couple of times. I finally resigned after serving in various offices for 35 years. I felt strongly that the association should be again led by a woman (and a good role model or our female athletes). There are more than enough qualified women would could do well in such a position...if we could convince one to take the job. That candidate number would also include our current interim head coach.

Agree ND, how many times would BG's voice be shredded into a high pitched hoarse squeak by the end of the game? That subsided after his first absence from the bench, which was positive.
I used to hear that squeak and decide to send in an email to the coach suggesting it wasn't worth damaging his vocal chords to yell so much. But as I noted on another thread, I am a lifelong procrastinator and never did.

OT: I was director and coached a girls CYO team when my kids were playing. There were three other teams, coached by Dads. Once when I needed a coach, I persuaded a Mom to take the job, she turned out to be pretty good, her name was Magarity

RGS, anytime you need to fill a book do it right here on this board please. We have first dibs. Years ago as WBB ascended and about 75% or so of all college BB coaches were men (100% of Men's teams coached by men, 50% or so of Women's teams Coached by men) I wondered if female coaches, as they gained experience and success would begin to be hired as coaches of men's teams and the ratio of coaches would gradually move to 50/50 with some female coaches leading men's teams and some male coaches leading women's teams, as colleges hired the most skilled coaching professional available when an opening arose.
I would say that now all or virtually all men's teams still have a male coach, but less and less women's teams have a male coach, so the 50/50 ratio is getting closer, but in a "separate but equal" rather than an integrated way.

CBG is perfectly capable of claiming that he is being railroaded by the college.
In the case of Copper and player #1, CBG voluntarily suspended himself in response to Cooper's lawsuit. As HC was making an announcement about an interim coach, he sought to hold a press conference at the Hart, supposedly having invited the press. The college put a quick stop to that.
Subsequently, during his voluntary suspension, he orchestrated a letter-writing campaign from fellow coaches and local supporters (and former players? I can't remember exactly) to TPTB asking that he be reinstated.
After two months of voluntary suspension, he unsuspended himself and returned to the position of head coach.
(^^^^ This chronology should accompany a definition of farce.) _______________________

PP, as soon as these charges were made, the school & BG lawyered up. His voluntary suspension was on legal advice. He did NOT un-suspend himself, it is clear that he returned only with the full support of the school and after their internal investigation could find little or no proof. You have given zero support that he orchestrated anything, rather you clearly have no appreciation, for better or worse, how strong the bond he has retained over the years with many of his former players and staff. Personally, when this first came out I was fairly neutral and waiting more information. Once I read cooper's compliant where she stated that there were numerous other players who had similar experiences including current teammates and not one came forward, I figured it was BS, and have had no reason to doubt that. And as any lawyer will tell you, this was headed to settlement from day one, as almost of these cases do.

I continue to not understand why we're re-litigating the Cooper matter, with zero evidence as to whether the current matter is in any way similar.

Let's him pore over newspaper clippings from years ago for who knows why. Must make him happy I guess, because no one here cares.

Most of pp's posts are factual even if you don't agree with him. Seems like Gibbons "unsuspending himself" is a bit of a stretch, however. If that in fact happened, I don't think Holy Cross would have waited 5 years to dump him, not with the record he's amassed since that happened.
