May he Rest In Peace. Too bad that video that he participated in with Cooz, Heinsohn, Palazzi and Kaftan has not been released before he died

Sad but a life very well lived. Andy Jr was a housemate on Caro and teammate on our many intramural (football/hoop/softball) teams during our days on the Hill.
RIP Coach.

His son played for Georgetown and became a lawyer with Justice. We tended bartogether at Chadwick’s, when I was in the Army(my brother-in-laws bar), and boy did he love Assumption, but wished his dad was at HC

His favorite moment as a player was guarding Pistol Pete in the Garden Andy Jr used to tell us that story...I think he held Pete to some ungodly low scoring figure for him and his Hoya teammates carried him off the Garden floor....so the story went anyway ETA: found this regarding Mike Laska and Pistol Pete in 1969-70....Mike went to Assumption Prep (when did that close?)...Andy Jr went to St John's Shrewsbury...about 17 years between them. Look at all the Catholic HS GTown's rostah went to. Beat us 76-75 that year. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1969%E2%80%9370_Georgetown_Hoyas_men%27s_basketball_team

LSU won 83-82. Georgetown had Mike Laska, a 5-11 senior guard on the team. I can't find a box score to see how many either player scored. Mike played three years for Georgetown, scoring 407 points.

Pete Maravich entered the game with a 44 ppg average. Laska held him to 20, a season low and two points off his career low of 18 (!). Here's the box score:

Interesting read of the box score. Brought back memories of two LSU bigs—Allen “Apple” Sanders and Bill “Fig” Newton—whose hands were not the best and “caught” a few of the Pistol’s no look passes with their noggins.
Also, that game, which was either regionally or nationally televised, contained one of Pistol Pete’s amazing highlights.
LSU grabbed a defensive rebound and threw the ball toward Pete approaching half court. Pete was looking back to the G’town basket for the pass and a G’town defender set up on his blind side waiting for the charge call when Pete landed and turned around—in fact fell early in anticipation of the call. Pete landed on one foot, somehow saw the defender, pirouetted and avoided the charge leaving the untouched Hoya defender on his rear at the MSG half court. Would have been a diving call if it was the NHL.

Somewhere around 1970 I think That's about right. Assumption had a great campus; it would have been nice if St. John's had moved there rather than to Shrewsbury. Their loss was QCC's gain.

Forgot to add that I'm pretty certain that Andy graduated from North High (across from WAM), my alma mater. His brother, George was a long time history teacher there. And a good one.

There was a period of a few years after Assumption College moved that Assumption Prep and the new Quinsigamond college were neighbors. SJ would have had to make their move a few years earlier and been neighbors with rival Assumption Prep. Land back in those days was probably cheaper in Shrewbury than in the city

My high school scrimmaged at St. John's and the late St. Mary's of Milford my first couple years of high school, 1965-66-67, Prep closed in 1970. I saw a friend of mine play a semi-pro game there the last year the school was open.

One of Andy's mentors and later a great friend was the legendary Marty O'Malley, an HC grad and I believe a Head Coach of North High.

I think Marty O'Malley was in his last year as head coach when I was in college and student teaching at North. Either that or he had just been stepped down.
His replacement? Bill Gibbons Sr. Small world.
