Holy Cross forward Mark Znutas, bringing a team to Sun Valley for a fourth straight year, is glad to be back.
Znutas said, “We look at our visit as quality time with friends, who come from Los Angeles, Denver, Toronto, New York and Boston. Sun Valley is a great spot to hang out in, and we play very competitive hockey—a perfect combination.”
Head coach Mike Daly, 29, was a Crusaders defenseman and Holy Cross captain in 2012.
The visiting Holy Cross skaters played for the winningest coach in the school’s hockey history, Winthrop native Paul Pearl. He compiled a 297-293-69 career record in Worcester ending in May 2014.
Holy Cross boasts a player who played for Pearl during a high-water mark of Crusaders hockey—in 2006 when No. 15-seeded Holy Cross stunned No. 2 Minnesota in the NCAA West Regional semi-finals.
That’s defenseman Marty Dams, 34, from Manotick, Ontario, the Crusaders captain in 2009 who played 124 games from 2005-09 and then skated in the Netherlands and Belgium.
Returning is Jordan Cyr, 32, from Nobleton, Ontario.
Cyr played 77 games with 62 points for Holy Cross from 2008-10. Cyr was the MVP both seasons and led the team in goals (19, 14) and points (32, 30). In three Idaho visits, he has six goals and six assists in games played against the Suns.
Another offensive threat is forward Erik Vos, 30, from Hamilton, Ont., Canada. He scored 62 goals in 143 games for the BCHL Powell River Kings from 2007-09, then skated 141 games with 32 goals for Holy Cross from 2009-13.
Former captain Vos has six goals and nine assists in three visits. He led Holy Cross with two goals/three assists in last year’s 3-2 and 5-4 sweep.
Crusaders Alumni newcomer Mike Barrett, 25, from Orland Park, Ill., piled up 44 goals and 55 assists for 99 points in 147 Holy Cross games from 2013-17. He played 61 games for the minor league Cincinnati Cyclones last winter.
This year’s goaltender is Ian Dams, 32, younger brother of Marty Dams. The 6-0, 200-pound younger brother of Marty Dams played 50 Holy Cross games from 2006-10.
One Crusader expected who didn’t compete at Holy Cross is first-year forward Alec Hajdukovich, 27, from Fairbanks, Ak. He skated 109 games for University of Alaska-Fairbanks from 2012-16.
Here are other Crusader roster details, with Holy Cross years and stats in parentheses:
