Do we really have less scholarship $$ relative to other PL schools for softball? The NCAA max is 12 softball scholarships per team; is this not what we provide? Either way, we need another top pitcher, and we need to find some bats... Only one PL team is fully funded, i.e. Boston U. Lehigh is 2nd in spending, followed by Bucknell and Colgate. Holy Cross and Lafayette trail. HC and LC appear to have about 5-6 scholarships, which are likely divided among multiple players.

Logic would suggest that you seek the top pitchers and realize it might be wise to invest a full scholarship on a great pitcher as opposed to two 1/2 scholarships on good fielders. Maybe 5 scholarships would go to 2 pitchers (full) and 6 fielders (1/2)?

KY, I agree that such a distribution is the best way to go in softball. The pitcher is clearly the comment slyer in this sport and can pitch more games because of the different delivery than would be possible for a baseball pitcher.

It's been a rough year (now 7-27) but yesterday was a nice change of pace with a dh sweep at URI. In fact our sr. pitcher Alexanfra Held 'should' have pitched a perfect game. See this from the URI site:
"Holy Cross starter Alexandra Held carried a perfect game into the seventh inning, and came within one out of a no-hitter. Held retired the first 18 batters she faced before Faith Musselwhite reached on an error to open the seventh. After the next two batters were retired, Erica Robles doubled to right center to break up both the no hitter and shutout, driving in Musselwhite." That's a very tough break for Alexandra

3-1 vs URI and Maine. We're in contention for the Yankee Conference title. Now let's win the PL.

We need some bats--team is batting .199 vs opponents .267 and has 5 home runs versus 25 for our opponents. We have a handful of players batting sub .150 who start.

Bats woke up today with 15 hits but our pitching arms were not strong enough the finish the job. We blew a 5-0 lead in the 6th and 7th innings and lost in 9, 6-5. Nelson tried to save it but took the loss. Playoffs now will be very tough to reach

We're playing BC now for the first time since '99 - it's a big challenge as they're a fully-funded ACC team. Game is on Watch ESPN (no charge) - same teams play tmro at HC.

We did not look like a 9-30 team - easily the most satisfying win of the season - sr.pitcher Held will remember this one for a long time. Kelly Nelson surely will get the ball tmro and try for an unlikely sweep.

Today was supposed to be a doubleheader vs Quinnipiac, but that was cancelled so the Bobcats could get in two MAAC league games against Marist that had been previously rained out. That's OK. With apologies to Ernie Banks, Let's play one...against the Eagles! Perfect weather conditions for the 5PM start and the players can get their classes in during the day.

Lost all three games this weekend vs. Lehigh - all three games were very close so this team’s record does not reflect their progress this season with 4 good frosh starting - season wraps next weekend with 3 winnable games at home vs. Lafayette

The PL Softball Tournament format has a tough love component to it. Colgate is 22-22 overall and 5-7 in the league according to latest standing on PL website, but looks like it will miss the tournament and any chance of going to the NCAA. In PL basketball a team could have a terrible record and get hot and go to Dayton. I suppose that would be tough love for the regular season champion but at least they would go to the NIT.
A one day doubleheader play-in round for seeds 4,5,6,7 at the home field of the fourth place team with the winners of the first game playing in the second game for the fourth seed in the PLT would be tough love for the fourth place team but would offer hope for teams like HC who seem to be improving with close losses late in the season.
Every post season tournament configuration can be considered unfair for somebody, but at least this way all seven teams have something to play for when weather conditions finally become fan and player friendly.
Another thought would be an NIT/WBI type softball tournament for Northern teams whose seasons end when softball weather finally arrives. Baseball players have the Cape League and similar summer leagues to go to for good weather ball, but you don't read much in the sports pages about summer collegiate softball leagues. Just googled it and there aren't many with one explanation being that fall and spring softball schedules are so grueling coaches prefer players to rejuvenate during the summer.

I've seen some wacky ideas and this one is up there - there's exams this time of the year and having 4 of 7 teams make the playoffs at one site on one weekend makes perfect sense. It's a steep climb upwards for HC but we should take the Lafayette home series next weekend and bring in another good recruiting class in the fall. We need another reliable starter and improve our team batting average which was very low for most of this season.

My ideas have been called worst then wacky, believe me. I forgot about exams and was thinking more about wanting to relax in the sun watching an HC softball or baseball game without my arthritis throbbing in the cold and damp. But exams come first.
