2006 West Regional, Holy Cross 4, No. 2 overall Minnesota 3 (OT): Though this isn't the biggest upset by PairWise ranking or seed (Wisconsin was the No. 1 overall seed, not the Gophers) Minnesota's stunning loss in Grand Forks, N.D., lives on. The Gophers were WCHA regular-season champs and only three years removed from back-to-back NCAA championships. Thirteen years later, you'll still see North Dakota fans wearing Holy Cross sweaters to tease Gophers fans.

A friend from North Dakota says that UND fans so hate Minnesota that they will stop on the road to pick up gophers killed by vehicles so they can freeze them and bring them to the next UND-Minnesota game to throw on the ice

HC fans learn to be low maintenance. Give us one NCAA victory and we will happily make it last for decades. Having said that, I remember Dick Lutsk's radio call of the game. It rivaled Al Michael's "Do You believe in Miracles?" call for me. It was that exciting.

Wasn't Dick Lutsk. Game was on ESPN and radio was WCHC, so the announcers were students. Some of our posters may have been on the call. And they eventually used the Al Michaels "Do you believe in miracle" line. Here's an HC video with the WCHC audio over the ESPN video.
And here's the ESPN broadcast with, I think, John Buccigross on play-by-play

Was in the house. I think Kyle may have needed some potassium injections. It was pretty incredible.

Best part is our coach walking out on the ice like a gentleman, not surprised at all, like just another day at the office. We should have announced a plan to make the jump to Hockey East in the post game interview.

Although my memory can play tricks on me, I remember hearing Dick Lutsk interviewing Fr. McFarland from the arena and asking him something to the effect of would Father like to see a beautiful arena like that at Holy Cross and Fr. McFarland answering something to the effect of sure if anyone could donate $40 million or so. It's possible I'm remembering that interview from another location after the fact. Does anyone have contact info for Dick Lutsk to ask him if he broadcast the two NCAA games on radio? And here's the ESPN broadcast with, I think, John Buccigross on play-by-play

The Al Michaels reference threw me off since the WCHC guys definitely used it. My apologies to your accurate memory. www.goholycross.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=917313&SPID=157211&DB_OEM_ID=33100&ATCLID=210197064

Thanks for your research and link to the story. Fascinating that a local station in Fairbanks, Alaska picked up the game live. Fairbanks must be a hockey hotbed. When Fr. McFarland immediately responded to Dick's question by putting a feeler out for a large donation I said to myself: Father is a good Jesuit. I always thought that Southbridge Street neighbor Polar Beverages would be a natural candidate for naming rights to a new or the existing HC ice arena using the name "Polar Igloo," or a similar play on the Polar brand. But that ship sailed when the WooSox sold them naming rights to Polar Park.

[...] But that ship sailed when the WooSox sold them naming rights to Polar Park. ... and when HC failed to capitalize on the big win by extending Pearl, building a new rink, moving leagues, or otherwise bolstering the program. ::SHRUG::
