Two top ten coaches in the game; you could make the argument they’re two of the best five.
Hard to go wrong with either choice.

A terrific coach, but A bit early in his career for Beard to be considered top 10, never mind top 5

A terrific coach, but A bit early in his career for Beard to be considered top 10, never mind top 5 Honestly never heard of/ was aware of him prior to this season.
And didn't Bennett lose 6 kids ( half transfers ? ) a couple years ago with people saying most top recruits didn't want to play in his 'boring' system ?
As we'll all too soon see with Chesney, these days a good/successful coach at HC will NEVER stay more than 4 years let alone 10 to 15 years.

A terrific coach, but A bit early in his career for Beard to be considered top 10, never mind top 5 I don't think it's that ridiculous. I'd rather have Chris Beard than Bill Self running my program today. Of course, Self has the far better resume, the name, and the longevity, but I believe Beard is just as good of a coach.

Re: Chris Beard-- he coached Arkansas-Little Rock for one season. The season before he got there the team was 13-18. His record for one season was 30-5. He did not bring in any recruits who became big scorers. The next season the team went 15-17. That might make one think he knows his X's & O's.

7 responses so far and only 1 correct (me).
Beard went up against Tony Bennett's 6 4-star recruits with 1 4-star guy and a hodgepodge of a roster, and likely would have won the game if it weren't for a couple egregious calls in OT. He also had to beat teams ranked 2, 3, 6 by KenPom to get to the Championship, compared with the much easier path for UVA that included one one team in the top 9.
The top 3 candidates for any open coaching job right now should be (in no particular order): -Chris Beard -Rick Pitino -Brad Stevens
(Bill Carmody is 4th, FWIW)

I first became aware of Chris Beard on the ESPN series "Knight School", which covered tryouts for one walk-on on Bob Knight's Texas Tech team. Beard first speaks at about 7:34:

A quick glance at the roster shows two players who joined the team as Juniors his one season, with no data on sports-reference for their freshman and soph seasons, leading one to believe they were JuCo transfers. There was another player who may have transferred in and sat out the prior season.

Many years ago SI did a big college football issue and checked every aspect of the sport. One topic was college campuses and SI gave Tex Tech the award for the ugliest college campus. Several weeks later SI did a follow up and said (paraphrasing) “we got so many letters about Texas Tech having the ugliest campus in America that we decided to revisit the matter and the campus and we must report that, on second thought, we got it right: Texas Tech has the ugliest campus in America. I recall visiting the campus in the late 1970’s and being immediately struck by how hideous it was. Maybe there’s been some beautification efforts in the last few decades to help Coach Beard attract ball players....

I wonder if Willard would give him a recommendation? I'll say one thing, a choice of Pitino would sure signal a change!

Does his chief local recruiter come with him? never heard of any shenanigans with UCLAs recruiting. Once the players got there it was a different matter entirely. Google Sam Gilbert sometime.

The recruits all knew the extra benefits that Gilbert would provide, so he was a big recruiting advantage

Have not seen those contenders, but the NY State Universities built in 60s architecture style , ala Stony Brook and Albany, are pretty bad
