By my math, HC would be one over the max of 13 schollies had this kid accepted the offer.

As of two weeks ago he was committed to reclassifying and was being called a 2022 recruit. Even his coach called him a 2022. However in the last few weeks his recruiting really blew up and apparently he changed his mind and decided to sign now.

why go to prep school when you could transfer after a year in a D-1 program

To be more prepared academically and athletically. Despite the numbers, few players in high school actually plan to transfer after one season in college.

A year of added growth and maturity lets you trade your age 18 year for an age 22 year.

...and you still have 4 years left to play, not 3. I'm assuming, of course, the extra year granted everyone that played in 2020-21 is a one-time-only offer.
Or go to a program that will redshirt you. In a normal year, for example, Louth as a basketball player would have been better off somewhere that did that. Clearly not ready for D1 ball (not that he won't be at some point) even at HC's level.

Clearly not ready ......, based on what? How he looked on the sidelines? The kid was behind the 8 ball for what he had of a "year", which was next to nothing.

It's much easier to have your self "game ready" if you're in the same country as the rest of your team

We saw very little of Louth so hard to read too much into it but he definitely didn’t appear ready to play D1 basketball in that limited action. Hopefully that changes with a full year of conditioning and playing with and against D1 players every day.

He was clearly not in condition to play as he had a very difficult time running the floor to keep up with the action. After a few cameo appearances his season was basically shutdown. Hopefully with a full preseason he'll be able to contribute next season.

Normally a lot of guys on the team spend some time in Worcester during the summer. That time will be big for Louth to get in sync with his team mates

Whatever the reason, it would be better from a basketball standpoint if the bigs we recruit got 5 years. But except for this year, they cannot (and maybe not even).
