Has it even been confirmed that the kid is going to be on scholarship? Welcome Ciaran; here's hoping you have a great 4 year experience at HC.

That was my initial question too, Dave. I’m not so sure he is a scholarship player.

Still no guesses on the pronunciation of Ciaran Irish Americans may apply Ciaran = Care-ran?

I still take issue that it is the very end of the 2019 recruiting cycle, and we clearly missed out on other options and this signing looks to be all that was left. Harsh, but true. I don't think it's co-incidental that Sandy's commitment comes in the same 24-hour cycle as those of Bas Leyte and Prosper Obidiebube, true inside players we had been pursuing for awhile. It does seem like we swung and missed at our primary targets here ( shades of Gasperini, Andrus, and Mahoney a few years back).
By his own admission, CS had a tough time adjusting to playing center at Avon, because he's "really a wing." If used as wing, he's pretty far down the depth chart and won't see much, if any, time on court next year. If he's projected as Jehyve-lite at this level, it will be a more difficult transition than the one he faced in prep school, and I can't see him helping much in that role for a couple years. Hargis (another late sign, who had actual D1 interest and offers) was touted coming into last season by some here, and did nothing. Hopefully, he will help in 2019-20, but I suppose it's possible he's been recruited over now.
Sandy may be the next Grandy, or he may be the next "Not Grandy," of whom there have been more than a couple examples. In either event, the team needs to win now, and I'd be shocked if he saw much action this coming season.

I think we are being a bit too negative. My guess is some of our top players all time didn't receive many D1 offers because they were deemed too slow or too short to play in the paint. Sandy could turn out to be a late bloomer and become a star. We have experienced the other end of the recruiting spectrum over the years with 2 highly sought high school All Americans back in the 60's and 70's who came to HC and didn't live up to the hype. Recruiting can be a strange business. I say we wait at least a year before we make any judgments on our incoming class of student-athletes. Two might be more appropriate. Texeira and who else? Just curious. (edit) Gaskins' issues had very little to do with his basketball skills, which were considerable. In that light, I beg forgiveness for forgetting.

Grandison committed on March 9th shortly after his season ended, Sandy committed in May two full months after his season ended and still without any D-1 offers, don't see the comparison. This strategy of recruiting players this late in the recruiting cycle is crazy we took a flyer on Verbeek last year and it appears we're doing the same thing again this year. The end of this coach's tenure cannot come some enough.

Plenty of other mistakes, however.

I'm not sure what the mistake was with Verbeek, he's a walk on, isn't he? Verbeek is on scholarship. That many of us are periodically confused about who the scholarship players are and aren't tells us most, if not everything, we need to know about the state of affairs.

From the miscreants getting suspended/expelled to the total lack of roster management and program building, Carmody has really damaged this program.

That many of us are periodically confused about who the scholarship players are and aren't tells us most, if not everything, we need to know about the state of affairs. Not sure where you're going with this. If you're saying things are scary because our scholarship freshmen played so few minutes it was hard to tell if they were on scholarship, fair enough. I think any confusion comes from a combination of our own over fascination with the team and everyone's love of social media. Traditionally we knew a walk-on because when the roster was finally published, there was a name and face we never heard of. Lovisolo, Yeutter, and Hart (as well as Hargis and Verbeek) all tweeted about their opportunities to play. Verbalcommits.com reported these as fact. Crossports 'ers scour the tweet wire and report them here. Until actual letters were signed, HC was silent and we speculated and rolled the five guys into one basket. We even gave Perkins scholarship to one of the walk-ons When things were signed and official, HC put out two press releases. One for the scholarship guys and one for the walk-ons. I think the old walk-ons were decent players who were at the school already and tried out. Does the fact that we are now seeking out preferred walk ons say something about the state of affairs? Maybe it says our guys are too fragile and if a couple sit out a practice to nurse a nagging injury there aren't enough warm bodies? Does the fact that there was actually a press release about the "preferred" walk-ons say everything about the state of affairs? Maybe too much emphasis on style and not enough on substance? Or was it the fact that HC was silent about the signings until there were actually signed and gave our imaginations opportunity to run wild that told us something about the state of affairs. I'm going to assume that you're saying it's a sad state of affairs that even the most fanatical fans of the program have become so disinterested that we don't even know who's on the roster. Frankly that interpretation came to me as I finished typing this overly long post

Tom,
I think what he meant to say was that its sad that certain scholarship players received so little minutes on a team with absolutely zero depth. Last years frosh had stat lines for the season that many walk ons have had.
Sorry if I put words in the mouth of another poster. Just saying what I read out of that particular post.

Similar to a PL FB team getting an FBS transfer QB, a PL BB team that can get a "preferred" walk on who had a D-2 full scholarship offer is a pretty good get. It wouldn't be as big a deal in the Ivy league, but I think it is a recruiting accomplishment for HC if it happens. This recruit will probably be a scholarship recruit if he comes, but in general a D-2 scholarship player would have a shot at playing in the PL depending on his and his teammates development.

I'm interpreting the sentiment to mean: if you can get him for free, why not bring him in, let him pay for school, play basketball, then use the scholarship later/next year when you are competing for a more-highly touted player?

Pretty much where I was going with my first guess at intent Total minutes for freshmen on scholarship 54 and 20 Total minutes for freshmen not on scholarship 3, 1, and 0 Verbeek's 20 minutes is wicked low for a scholarship player. Pretty high for a walk on - even if the team is regularly in blowouts. Order of magnitude greater than the number of minutes the walk-ons actually got

Order of magnitude greater than the number of minutes the walk-ons actually got The worst part about those numbers: 10th place finish in the PL with a 6-12 record. It would be one thing if they were sitting out because they were on a good team, but that was not the case. This all goes back to the roster management issue. For the 2nd time in 3 years, Carmody took a player early (Copeland that time, Pridgeon this time) and then took another player late who played the same exact position. If Carmody was actually wise about how he was offering and accepting scholarship players, we wouldn't be seeing this type of doubling up ESPECIALLY at positions where we don't have any need. Unlike other coaches who are actually engaged in the strategic aspects of recruiting and building a roster, Carmody appears to just be flinging crap (offers) against a wall and will just roll with whoever commits first.

It's odd that you cite "positions where we don't have any need" when you are so highly critical of all but two of our returning players?

It's odd that you cite "positions where we don't have any need" when you are so highly critical of all but two of our returning players? However overrated some players may be, we can't just keep signing more and more guys to the same positions, especially if they aren't even going to get playing time (like Hargris last year). In the last 3 years we have now signed 5 guys who are almost identical to play the same position - Copeland, Grandison, Hargris, Prideon, Sandy. Meanwhile, the only "big" we have signed is about 50 pounds away from being able to play in the paint. It's absolute madness.

It's not madness, Bring Back. It's Carmody's ego to think he's smarter than everyone else.

No D1 offers and we give him a scholarship in May!! Pure craziness!!! How did all our late recrits work out last year? You would think this guys would learn his lesson. He doesn’t learn any lessons, he flat out could care less about the future of this program. He has no vision or plan. He had one lucky 4 game run, and four lousy seasons.
Change needs to happen after this season or just drop to D3 and stop trying to fool the few followers you have left!

1. No one here knows if he will he on scholarship. 2. No one here has ever seen him play. 3. Whatever the situation, the kid is 18-19 years old and probably pretty excited about the opportunity to play D1 basketball 4-5 years after he first started playing in a place not known for churning out blue-chip recruits. Let him enjoy his moment and we’ll see what happens. No amount of b****ing and moaning here is going to change his status on the team or Carmody’s status as the head coach next season. 4. Good luck to the young man and welcome to HC.
