Seemed like a logical move to join at the time....
In retrospect, a total blunder that we didn't !

How about we have it as a topic and not a thread? Those both pro or con must admit the decision affected much more than just men's basketball.
Then you have threads within it.
Also, easier for those who are sick of the topic to skip it rather than dance through a mine field of threads that end up discussing it.
Just a suggestion.

I'll go to a couple of Religion Boards and study up on how they title discussion of Original Sin for reference. There is another "Great Regret" that I haven't seen discussed since I became active and that is HC having two undefeated football teams during the Duffner era but being blocked from playing for a national championship due to league rules, genuflecting to the Ivy League I presume, not allowing members to accept a post-season bid to the NCAA 1-AA tournament. Perhaps that subject was so thoroughly kvetched about that everyone is permanently sick of discussing it or feel that our mythical national championship of finishing the regular season ranked number one in the polls was enough. Not trying to revise history but wonder if others felt regret HC couldn't compete due to league rules. We played a team from the Carolinas iirc under Coach Carter when the 1-AA tournament was new, but the rules must have changed when the Colonial became the PL, and HC and it's fans really didn't have a chance to get prepared for that game and tournament as I recall. I remember being at Alumni Stadium for a BC-HC game when D-1 was splitting and HC had a good record as well as BC. The game must have been televised on ABC because I remember seeing an HC Fan with a sign: Ain't we Bowl Contenders, too? Apparently the answer was no because we were in the wrong sub-division although the casual fan like myself was confused by it all.

HC also blew the playoffs off in 1984 opting to play BC instead (the game was scheduled for a week later than the season had ended in past years...later pushed back* a week from that). 8-2 record sans BC probably would have qualified.
1985 they were eligible but the season was a disastah; after that PL and no tournament for maybe 15 years.
*pushed back so BC could play a game against Miami on national tv the day after Thanksgiving....I heard that game was pretty exciting.

Not trying to revise history but wonder if others felt regret HC couldn't compete due to league rules. Yes ...the BC game to end the season would have been a more attractive option to most during the Duffner glory days, but that was taken away too, of course. As luck would have it, between 1987 and 1990, as BC was in a down cycle, no question the games would have been competitive. 1991, with only one scholarship class, and the beginning of the Coughlin era, no way.

I was more going with the regret that those Duffner teams were not allowed to go to the play-offs. Not just the #1 team, but a lot of those teams could have had nice runs

Wait a minute. . . I'm contributing to the hijacking of a thread designed to keep threads from being hijacked. That can't be good

The very strong and non-PL Carter teams of '82, '83, and '84 were beat up pretty bad by BC...I have no reason to think the Patriot League teams of Duffner would have fared any better. The only Duffner team to play BC (the 1986 10-0 PL champs at the time with Gordie starring as a junior) got walloped 56-26. By that time the talent gap w/BC was obvious - heck, it was obvious v Carter's power teams notwithstanding their future NFLers.
I would have like to have seen how far the '86 and '87 teams could have gone in the playoffs. '87 could have been national champions if things broke right and '86 could have made a pretty deep run IMHO.

What I would have not liked is HC going to the playoffs (which they would have made every year under Duffner) AND playing BC the last or next to last game of the year. Attrition factor.
