I also like the energy level and overall positive tone in this thread. Anyone else sense an energy similar to Coach Chesney? I think he is more intense than Chesney. He said he has benefited greatly from being an assistant to a number of head coaches, and absorbed those qualities he liked, and put aside those he didn't. Wojo is a big branch on the Coach K tree, and Coach K is probably as intense as you get.

Hoops, if you remember CBG's contract, it ended on June 30th. Employment contracts with the college are typically for a one year period which begins and ends with the fiscal year. Yes, you keep saying that, but not acknowledging that this situation is in no way typical.
Putting a finer point on it: in the latter days of June, why on earth would interim AD Sullivan or incoming AD Blossom tender contract renewals to the current assistants when they were just kicking off the national search for the guy who would be their boss? Having those assistants locked up could legitimately be a negative to a prospective hire.
If they do have contracts in place, that's likely because they were finalized before Carmody's retirement... which is certainly possible. But no AD was going to renew those contracts after Carmody announced his retirement.
The big negative on having contracts in place is the buyout if they are let go. I agree with your third paragraph. Those posters who attended may tell us more about the status of any/all assistants.

All of the current assistants contracts expired June 30th. They are on week-to-week deals now at rate of their most recent contract. One has a decent shot of staying.

Some/all? of the assistants were at the press conference and were acknowledged. They should be under contract for 2019-20, as the contract period started July 1. Those guys are basically auditioning for a job with Nelson. Regardless of whether the school extended their contracts, converted them to at-will for the month, or they are currently volunteering, there are not many other places for them to go right now if they want to be D1 Assistants next year. I hope Nelson is not being pressured to keep anyone from Carmody's staff.

I also hope he is allowed to set up his own staff...including, perhaps, some from the current staff if he so desires.

Assistants at other schools are under contract for 2019-20; nearly every school has a July-June or June-May fiscal year. Any assistant worth his salt already has at least a one year contract in his pocket. Doubt that many assistants have contract provisions that would require them to pay the school if they departed early.

He spoke about the current players who were there. Anyone know how many showed up and who did not? About half the team is on campus, per coach..

If he was the number one candidate from the beginning, why the need for a “national search?” Maybe the first guy the search firm recommended ?

If he was the number one candidate from the beginning, why the need for a “national search?” He "found" him during the national search. Seems pretty clear from their bios that they had no prior relationship.
I took "from the beginning" to mean that Nelson emerged early in the process. (I've got a strong suspicion that they were introduced via the search firm, Parker.)
I'll have to re-watch it, but it seemed like Blossom knew of Nelson before the search commenced.

^^^ He said about half the team was on campus. Worked out with them on Monday afternoon. He has spoken by phone with the others. Unless you are on an internship or something academic related as a scholarship athlete you should be on campus working out during the summer. I think that will change with the new coach.

"We will be relentless"! He has a great coaching background, and I expect that his experience as a player at the highest level will give him instant credibility with the team. I love the pick. Go cross!

If the current assistants have been converted to at will employees, that indicates that CBC and IADBS were communicating well, the coach was keeping the college apprised of his situation, and the Dept. was fairly nimble even without a permanent AD in place. I wasn't overly impressed with the way (F)IADBS handled the BG suspension, but that would have been a "big bowl of awkward" for any administrator, to use a Dan Shaughnessy, '75 phrase. Other than that he appears to have been a good caretaker for the Dept. I wonder if he and other assorted administrators, coaches and staff attended and hob nobbed with the faithful over refreshments? That's a good way to be inclusive and make the fans feel welcome.

With the possible defection of two starters, I was thinking the annual exhibition against Assumption in the fall could be a tight contest. Now I'm with you. Protect the home floor!

I watched the press conference and thought Nelson did well. It will come down to can he run a program and coach the X’s and O’s. One would assume he brings in a veteran of D1 abs better with prior head coaching experience to be his associate head coach. I wonder how he’ll adjust to recruiting kids at the PL level and meeting the academic requirements of the league.

Perhaps it was only the women who had a pre-season exhibition game with the Greyhounds last year. A nice cross town tradition. The "WRTA Series."😁

Worth reading the testimonials on the HC MBB twitter feed. twitter.com/HCrossMBB(Must have been quite the reception after the presser, as no one who was there has posted yet!)

Would love to know if CBC’s assistants will be hitting the recruiting sites this weekend or if BN has any assistants of his own yet When some of us Crossporters cornered Coach Nelson, he said the staff was heading out on Thursday morning and he was staying on campus to get to know the current players until Friday night when he would hit the road...

It was good to know that Bill Carmody was there. He has taken a lot of criticism on this site and could have easily been been down at the Jersey Shore.I am sure he will help during BN's transition and work to keep the players on the team. Coach Nelson acknowledged Coach Carmody, but he was not in attendance...

I wonder if he has met Coach Chesney yet? They can probably be of great help to each other.
