Welcome Austin! I guess we'll have to take the old "AB" moniker out of mothballs (I'm sure Andrew won't mind). Looking forward to seeing a lot of those area code J's down the road!
I must say - when I came on this morning and saw this thread, I was more than a little bit puzzled. Then I read about the apparent status of Pat S. (strange happenings), and now it makes sense (as does the many offers we had out there). Wish the kid the best, at any rate.
Wow, 3 in 5 days - must be a modern day (Crossports) record?

Yeah, but how many 4 point plays can he make since the defenses all lay off him at the mid court line? Seriously, even knowing these highlights make everyone look like a superstar, it looked like only one or two of those bombs were within a foot of the 3 point arc. This young man can shoot and will surely loosen up defenses for us. Wow!!! Please AB, be careful on the football field!

Isn't Arnold Palmer from Latrobe? Indeed he is. Also home of the Rolling Rock brewery.

Jaw dropping highlight reel. Are you kidding me with that range? And with a defender in his face a lot of the time. By the time he's a senior at HC he'll be shooting from behind the half court line.

Great get. This staff is far more interested in kids who can shoot than size/position etc. Love this.

What shouldn't be lost on us, with all the attention to his phenomenal shooting range, is that Butler snared 8 rpg last year. He is a sturdy-looking, hard-nosed kid, as befits a football player, who should be able to help us on the boards. A little slow afoot, but his motor seems to hum along, and he looks like he knows what he's doing when he doesn't have the ball - he should thrive offensively in Carmody's system.

Agree that he does not possess great quickness of foot, but he is very active on D, with quick hands and fine anticipation in the passing lanes.

I love the fact that Holy Cross is emphasizing toughness, skill, leadership, and basketball IQ over raw size and athleticism in their recruiting. I think that is the only way mid to low majors can win on the big stage. Maybe Green doesn't have High-Major size, but the hope is that he has high-major leadership ability and IQ. Maybe Connor Niego doesn't have a High-Major bulk (yet), but the hope is that he has high major skill set and basketball IQ. Maybe Butler doesn't have High-Major athleticism, but the hope is that he has High-Major shooting ability and toughness. To me, Holy Cross is never going to out athletic or out size the big boys, but there is the possibility to be tougher, smarter, and more skilled. I think Carmody understands that more than anyone.
In my opinion, many kids are over-recruited based on their physical gifts and under-recruited based on their physical deficiencies. A Tom Crean or Bill Self won't take a chance on a guy without those physical gifts. At the end the year when they meet with their AD, they have a much easier time defending a failed recruit by saying "Man, he has all the physical ability, the light bulb just won't go on" than saying "I thought his skill level and toughness would trump the fact that he is a 6'4 power forward." The "light bulb going on" is an abstract idea that is hard to measure while size and athleticism are pretty concrete. The former allows the coach to place blame on the kid, while the latter allows the AD to point directly at the coach.
Certainly, the amount of kids that leave early for the NBA has allowed the smaller schools to narrow the gap. But I also think that the best mid to low majors have learned to exploit the over-recruitment of high major schools. They are willing to look past physical deficiencies and place a greater value on other traits that tend to have a greater impact on a team winning. It seems that is the direction that the Crusaders are heading and I think it will produce better results down the road.

man... this kid has some serious range. WOW! being given the green light to pull from that deep is pretty rare for any player at any level (at least those not named steph curry) and the fact that he can knock them down is really impressive.
his other scholarship offers aren't as impressive as some of carmody's other recruits (i do like the fact we beat a pl team and another new england program), but that could be a function of playing in small town pennsylvania. here's a little piece of trivia. latrobe is probably one of the most commonly mispronounced towns in the united states. ask anyone from the area where they are from... they'll tell you "LAY-trobe" no "lah-TROBE".
in any event, here's a video that shows some other dimensions of butler's game. here you can see the football player in him. he's strong with the ball and looks pretty tough around the hole. some nice passing as well, which i'm sure appealed to carmody and staff.
in short, i think this is another strong addition to our program. the kid can clearly shoot, is also pretty obviously a scorer and not just a shooter, has a nice rugged build, and as ky noted, i like the football player mentality in basketball players. i always think about rj when i think about that, although butler appears to be a much better shooter. while highlights rarely show defense, i have found football players to generally be agile, physical, aggressive defenders. there's a lot to like about butler.
welcome aboard austin!

Terrific insight. IS The RW teams that succeeded so well had these qualities. Ex. Jave, Curry, Torey, Kham, Pat D., Alex VDB, Pat W(who was a skinny, weak player in HS) and many more I am omitting

All I know is we got a kid who reminds me physically of Gordon Hayward (Niego), and a kid named Butler......if we can find a big named Howard, I'm going to be feeling pretty good!

Question: Where do you want to go to college? I'm undecided but I want to study nursing, my mother is a nurse and she inspired me go be a nurse! Don't know what we can offer this young man but happy to welcome him to Holy cross! Maybe he can do a double degree with HC and Becker! 45, that was the girl answering that question

Anyone know if this kid had any football offers ? No. In 2015, his high school went 0-9, scored 79 points, allowed 436. High school ranked 419 in PA. Most Greater Latrobe scored in a game was 17 against Connellsville. Hudl highlights here. Scroll to Connellsville game. www.hudl.com/team/v2/32045/greater-latrobe-high-school-boys-varsity-footballIn that game, he looks as if Gronk got to be QB of the Patriots. Biggest player on the field.

They won 63-6 after going almost 3 full seasons without a win. That's a fine way to break a losing streak. Congrats to Austin.

He led with 23 of his team's 69 in a 20 point win in their first game, the opening round of a tourney.
