In sports I believe leagues are important but not critical to developing a program and winning tradition and culture. The right staff, perhaps Chesney and Nelson, can make a mark, regardless of the Patriot League, and make both programs respected and highly regarded by future recruits
Whether the Board and Administration allows it to be is sustainable is unknown but time will tell.

Lack of substitutions and rotations in the 4th Quarter tells you a great deal on who they want to play moving forward

I was at the game.... A few things:
1. Navy is not an Awful FBS team - They're probably top 55.
2. Playing against the option always sucks - However, I don't think we were as prepared as we should have been from a pure schematics perspective...stop pinching our lb's when they run outside 80 percent of the time.
3. Holy Cross does have some talented players, moreso than in years past.
4. I'm not personally very impressed with our ability to make in game adjustments, I think we are lacking to a degree in the coaching department from what I've seen in this game. We really need to recruit some more coaching talent.
5. Had we made our field goal and not given up a touchdown within a minute before the half we would have only been down 7 at half, different game.
6. I think we'll have a stronger run game this year, we have the receivers to be a decent passing team, but I don't see our QB play being where it needs to be at this point.
7. I don't think any other PL team would have done much better against this Navy team...

Looking at how PL teams are doing, we will end up at least 7-4.

On point 2, during Chesney's pre-game radio interview with Dick Lutsk, Coach said they were focussing on stopping Navy's run up the middle instead of the deep pass. If he mentioned the option I didn't pick up on it but apparently they wanted to stop the power running game and force Navy to go east-west or pass.

Agree about PL handicapping it’s teams for no good reason. But we’ve discussed this ad nauseum. This game played out the way these games do. This is the roughest schedule HC has had in decades. We have a new QB and a 2nd year coach. The first few weeks will be an opportunity for HC to show resilience. The real season starts after Syracuse, a game for which our primary objective should be to physically survive with as few injuries as possible.

That's a legitimate point, because Navy can also run the ball up the middle - They're so good at running that option that you really need to play both pretty well. I just don't think we trusted our guys up front to take care of the give to the point that it prevented us from having our lb's play the outside. Navy can play anybody close, that offense is a schematic nightmare for any team - We just didn't adapt very well during the game in my opinion.

Cozier not playing is weird. Looked fine in pregame per sources on the ground.

Navy is not good but they aren't awful.. It is what it is but HC stopped taking football seriously when it joined the PL Navy is an AWFUL FBS team. How about a bet on where Navy finishes this year? We could wager $$$ (I’ll give you odds) but maybe another type of bet would be more appropriate. If Navy finishes in bottom 10 of FBS teams we will acknowledge that you are a football expert. If Navy does not finish in bottom 10 of FBS you will acknowledge that you are a blowhard What do you think?

We are going to play a 4-2-5 again this year
As a 1AA you aren’t physically gifted enough to defend the perimeter this way against the more talented D 1 teams that can stretch you wide and downfield
Take the game as a way to evaluate blocking, tackling, technique and energy along with the check
Offensively we lacked speed in the backfield without Cozier or using Forester. Still concerned by the QB role and unless Degenhart is able to make adjustments and grow I see a different option evolving by time PL play begins.
Like the Syracuse game, for now I think we should look at these as in season scrimmages with a paycheck-nothing more and nothing less

I go to many Navy games, including today’s. Pretty big ask of our defense with our QB play and lack of extended drives. QB isn’t mobile enough and too often acted like he was under pressure when he wasn’t and hurried his throws.

Also, just my opinion, but that missed FG was a perfect position in the game to run a fake.

Can't learn anything from a game like this as to how CD will do v our usual FCS competition. Why? He’s playing a good game. I don't think he had a very good game - but I have no idea as to how he will do v our usual FCS competition. (In other words, Navy may have had a lot to do with his game performance...but it is impossible to quantify that).
