I'll bet against it--at least for the most recent decades. I took a look at our leading tacklers of the past decade
2008= Lamkin & Rodriguez 2009= Rodriguez & DiMichelle 2010= Otis & Martin 2011= Otis & Mannix 2012= Mannix & Wachter & Sandoval 2013- Sandoval & Bhaya 2014= Zahkrzewski & Thompson 2015= Young & Bhaya 2016= McBeath & Young 2017= McBeath & Brady 2018= Brady & Lang
I understand the question is "Led in tackles first game started as freshman" , but I wasn't about to check every game we've played. So, I figured these players who led for a season might be the best candidates to have led for a game as a freshman starting his first game. When you go back and check each of these players, you see that very few played very much as freshmen, and I'd guess very few started even one game as a freshman. So, I'll suggest that Jake Dobbs can make the claim and defy anyone to prove otherwise.

Definitely one of the bright spots. Also happy to see my man Noah Johnson come up with a couple of big plays.

Granted we got blown out, but it's still a great effort.

And the press should ask him why he chose HC instead of walking on at Michigan

Met his family in DC on Saturday night. Lovely people and they said their son was very happy with his choice at HC. He loves Chesney and wanted the chance to play right away. Looks like he got His wish!

More of that coming-keep a balanced, but not overly aggressive D1 schedule and in 3 years most of us will be more than excited about the product

Did a little digging.
Nick McBeath TIED for the team lead in tackles in the 2015 opener at Monmouth with six. This was his first varsity game as a true freshman.

According to the roster he was a soph that year. Nick's first varsity game was the 2014 opener against Morgan State at home. He finished third on the team in tackles that day with five -- still a great effort.

Hopefully Dobbs will follow in the footsteps of Jerry McCabe who will be an honoree in the Ring of Honor next Saturday—a fellow Michigander and LB from Warren DeLaSalle HS.

Seen a lot of LBs over the past 25 years. Best kid since Milanette and Craig Callahan. No one has held a candle to those two IMO since 93.

Those two were definitely great players with good size but there have been a lot of excellent LB's over the years (David Streeter, David Dugan, David Fitzpatrick, Chris Nielsen, and Husain Karim (transferred after two years at HC to UNH and led them in tackles for two years. You were pretty good too, 43. I do wish you’d go a little easier on the current team. We all want to win but I wouldn’t get too crazy about losing big to Navy. We ended last year pretty well. First half of this year is going to be really rough but let’s support the guys and hope we continue to move the program forward. Saturday will be interesting.

Eyeball test. Those are just stats. Reason why teams were 11-0 or 9-1-1 was in big part because of those two. Some of the guys on that list were solid - Streeter and Dugan to name a few.
Others just got a ton of stats because D getting shredded and on the field a lot.
Good thing is I saw them all so able to have an opinion on all of them.

Craig Callahan Rob Milanette David Streeter David Dugan Those have probably been the best since the period you were referencing.
