Yale is picked to be the pre-season favorite to take the Ivy League this season. Here is an article about their top returning talent (8 seniors and 2 juniors):
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – With just over five weeks away from the kickoff of the 2019 Yale football season the preseason accolades continue to roll in for the Bulldogs. Three preseason top-25 polls recognized the Elis while senior guard Dieter Eiselen was tabbed as an All-American by Phil Steele and senior wide receiver Reed Klubnik was selected as the Preseason Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year. Yale, which was picked atop the Ivy League preseason media poll last week, is receiving votes in the STATS FCS Preseason Poll. The Bulldogs are also ranked in both HERO Sports' and College Sports Madness' top-25 rankings at 17 and 20, respectively. Dieter, a senior offensive lineman from Stellenbosch, South Africa, started all 10 games for Yale last season. He has made 24 starts in his career and has twice garnered All-Ivy League accolades, including a second team honor last year. Phil Steele selected Dieter as a Preseason Second-Team All-American. Klubnik, who was already tabbed to the Walter Payton Watch List earlier this offseason, garnered the top offensive Ivy League honor from Steele. The senior wideout from Austin, Texas broke the Yale record with 1,143 receiving yards last season, ranking ninth in FCS overall.
Steele also selected 11 Yale players to his All-Ivy teams. Klubnik, Eiselen, wide receiver JP Shohfi, offensive lineman Sterling Strother, defensive lineman Spencer Matthaei and linebacker Ryan Burke were selected to the First Team. Quarterback Kurt Rawlings, running back Alan Lamar and defensive lineman Charles Callender were second team selections. Running back Zane Dudek and tight end JJ Howland were tabbed to the Third Team. The Bulldogs head to ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Conn., for the 2019 Ivy League Media Day tomorrow morning in anticipation of the 147th season of Yale football which kicks off on Saturday, September 21 against Holy Cross.

Last year with the exact scheduling (our 1st, their 3rd) we won in OT. Previous year (our 7th, their 5th), not so much (trigger alert!).

It looks like his injuries last year may have slowed down Yale RB Zane Dudek. Two years ago he was unstoppable as a freshman RB, getting 7+ yards per carry and 1,000+ yards for the season. He had 22 carries for 221 yards against us last year.

Not much coming from Yale for this one. Here is their rundown of the game and of Holy Cross:
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – They Ivy League preseason favorite Yale Bulldogs are set to take the newly installed field turf at the Yale Bowl for the first time as the Elis face off against Holy Cross on Saturday, September 21 at 1 p.m. The Series Saturday's matchup is the 34th meeting as Yale leads the all-time series 28-5. The Bulldogs have won 14 of the last 16 meetings, but the Crusaders edged the Elis 31-28 in overtime last season. Bulldog Breakdown Head coach Tony Reno is back for his eighth season at the helm of the Elis as the Bulldogs go for a second Ivy League Championship in three seasons. Yale boasts 12 All-Ivy players returning to the fold in 2019 including Walter Payton Award Watch List member, Reed Klubnik. The watch list features just 25 players nationally for the most outstanding offensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). Klubnik set Yale's single-season receiving yards record with 1,143 last season and is joined by fellow All-Ivy wideout JP Shohfi, who both rank in among the top-10 all-time Bulldog receivers. Shohfi has been selected as captain of Team 147. The Bulldog offense did not graduate a starter from 2018. The offense also gets a boost as senior quarterback Kurt Rawlings is back to lead the Bulldogs after missing half of last season due to injury. Rawlings is 15-5 overall as a starter with an Ivy League title in 2017. Rawlings can also lean on two talented running backs in junior Zane Dudek and senior Alan Lamar. Both backs have previously earned All-Ivy honors but have only played together in just one game over the past two years due to injury. Perhaps the biggest strength of the 2019 Bulldogs will be its offensive line which is anchored by senior center Sterling Strother and senior left guard Dieter Eiselen, both of whom are projected as NFL Draft picks. On the defensive side, the unit looks revitalized with health playing a key factor once again. It all starts up front with senior defensive tackle Spencer Matthaei as the 6-foot-4, 285-pound lineman can be a defensive force. Reno has been quoted as saying he would like to see if defensive squad apply constant pressure and create opportunities for its secondary which is led by two-way player, junior cornerback Melvin Rouse II. Scouting Holy Cross Holy Cross is 1-1 to start the year with a victory over New Hampshire (13-10) and a loss at Navy (45-7). During the New Hampshire game, the Crusaders scored on a fumble recovery in the end zone with just 1:56 remaining in the fourth quarter to pull out the win. The Crusaders are coming off of their bye week. Holy Cross currently ranks first in the nation in fewest penalty yards (22.5 yards per game) and 10th in turnover margin (+1.5 turnovers per game). Junior quarterback Connor Degenhardt is 37-of-63 for 420 yards through two games. His top targets have been junior wide receiver Tenio Ayeni who has a team-best 11 receptions for 102 yards, with senior tight end Derek Mountain has 10 catches for 117 yards. On defense, freshman linebacker Jacob Dobbs leads the Crusaders with 18 total tackles. Senior defensive back Chris Riley has 16 total tackles and an interception, while junior defensive back Joe Lang has totaled 14 tackles, a pass breakup and a fumble recovery.

I was at that HC game and was impressed with the way the Crusaders handled Yale. Yale said it ws because they did not have spring football. However, they failed to mention that, at that time, neither did Holy Cross.

/\ Don't know about the spring football excuse, but I had always [correctly] heard that Yale's superstar (Heisman vote-getter and future pro quarterback Brian Dowling) did not play at all due to injury. He was so good as a high schooler (perhaps the very top recruit in America), that the coach was shocked to land him. As the greatest athlete in Yale's history (many say) - and very last four-sport athlete - he is quite well known for NEVER losing a football game (high school or college) in which he played the complete game. But, as I've said to Yalie pals, thems the breaks and we took advantage of them. (And besides, the next year with BD playing they only beat us by 7.)

In fairness, the reports about the HC advantage because Yale did not have spring practice were not direct from Yale. They ran in the papers that covered Yale. It showed to us that the reporters knew virtually nothing about HC.

Actually we didn't play Yale again after our win in 1967 until 1981....one of the great games at Fitton in the 80s albeit a 29-28 loss. Our all-time series with the Eli is somewhat quixotic, long stretches of not playing, which has led somewhat to our dismal 5-28 all-time record against them.

Our all-time series with the Eli is somewhat quixotic, long stretches of not playing, which has led somewhat to our dismal 5-28 all-time record against them. That's right, their rival Harvard beat us by 7 the following year en-route to their own super season.
I saw the '81 heartbreaking loss to a very strong Yale team in person and had no idea it had been that long between Yale games. (I've even written about that game here on Crossports)
