www.nytimes.com/2019/10/01/sports/columbia-silences-its-marching-band.html?smid=nytcore-ios-shareColumbia’s band has been “banned” allegedly for failing to fill out paperwork. It was a scramble band, like the HC group for which some of our posters played. The administration is clearly filled with a bunch of stiffs. Harmless hijinks are part of the fun of college. Sadly, there are always Dean Wormers ruining the fun. (You have to like the attention to detail by the reporter here who read an early 80s student newspaper article about the band and noted it was written by a freshman reporter named Neil Gorsuch.)

It was a scramble band, like the HC group for which some of our posters played. Small nit to pick, the HC band hasn't been a scramble band for at least 10 years. Possibly longer, but I don't recall from conversations with alums from that era. I'm no fan of scramble bands, but this is very silly on the part of the administration and the students running the band. From a distance, that deadline seems very early. However, having served on the HC band E-Board for 3 years, including during a period while searching for a new director, I don't get how you just ignore a deadline from the school. The administration needs to lighten up though. The students clearly tried to reach out to the school before the end of the prior year to sort things up and the administration clearly blew them off. I know the existence of these groups are more tolerated than embraced at these schools, but this is a little ridiculous. The best solution is to re-instate the band, give them an official warning about ignoring the deadline, and move on. I doubt that happens though.

I resent that remark! It was a scramble band, like the HC group for which some of our posters played. Small nit to pick, the HC band hasn't been a scramble band for at least 10 years. Dean Wormer says, The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me. I would re-instate them, let them play, but also inform them that they are on double secret probation while I find a way to revoke their charter. I'd put Neidermeyer on it. He's a sneaky little s%!t.
