On the Brown game thread we talked about Ayir Asante's great game with the two touchdowns and asked if any other freshman receiver ever caught two TD passes in one game. I don't have an answer to that yet, but I did want to offer a list of top freshman receivers (WR's and TE's--did not look at running backs) to see where AA stands among them. If I had to guess what freshman receiver caught the most passes I can say with certainty that I would not get the correct guy. Here are all the freshmen, as far as I can tell, who caught 15 or more passes. One caveat: I looked through the archives for four year players, I could have missed someone who caught a lot of passes as a freshman but only played 2 or 3 years and I could have included someone who was injured/red shirted his freshman year but caught the 15+ passes the first year he played.

33-275-6---Alex Schneider (2009)---94--815--11 I think many of us were keenly disappointed that we did not target him more as soph-jr-sr 29-397-2---John Myers (1994)----82--1,199--6 28-383-2---Kendy Hall (1998)---94--1,163--7 27-376-1---Jeff Laboranti (1994)---190--2,274--11 Jeff was our career leader in receptions for 20+ years until passed by Mike Fess 24-298-1---Bobby Andrews (1995)--144--1384--7 18-247-1---Steve Green (1998)---126--1,559--11 15-311-1---David Kassouf (1999)---71--1,102--6 20+ yards per reception as a freshman 15-154-0---Richie DeNicola (2015)---110---1,323---6
11--196--2---Ayir Asante through 6 games of 2019 season
Recent receivers posted the following freshman totals
14-135-1---Blaise Bell 12-215-2---Jake Wieczorek, my all-time favorite HC receiver 12-165-2---Tenio Ayeni 8-106-1---Spencer Gilliam--scored additional touchdowns on returns
Looking forward to watching AA's' pursuit of the freshman receiver receptions (33), yardage (397) and touchdowns (6) records as he helps the team vie for the PL Championship.

I’ll have to update AA’s stats later today. Looks like he is on track to break all the records this season

AA has moved up the list of freshman receivers. The smart money is betting that he passes John Myers for most receiving yards by a freshman sometime in the first half at Lehigh

I don’t mean to be a wise guy, but AA dropped many balls today.

I don’t mean to be a wise guy, but AA dropped many balls today. You're not a wise guy by any means--I was just presenting the facts. Here is what I'll say in his defense The fact that he caught 11 passes for 119 yards, despite the multiple drops, show he has a great ability to get open I don't think he dropped a lot of passes in prior games (others please weigh in if you think I'm wrong) With Tenio Ayeni as a senior, Spencer Gilliam as a junior, and AA as a soph, we have the nucleus of a great receiving corps next season AA may hold all the receiving records when he graduates--I think he's a great talent

Some early nerves with his peeps in the house (my assumption given the game’s relative proximity to northern NJ/St. Peter’s Prep)? Either way, or otherwise, in the end he acquitted himself very well.

Thanks KY.
He and CD had their connection of the season today on our first TD drive. A deep ball that Connor has typically tended to overthrow this year. AA made a terrific catch in tight double coverage with a thirs defender coming in late. Huge play that helped swing momentum big time after our defense stopped the Hoyas on fourth down (our efforts were helped by an awful spot by the officials on 3rd down).
Asante is a NY area product out of St Peters Prep in Jersey City, a Jesuit school.

That is a great picture!!!! Assuming that is the Asante family and friends--they'll have an easy drive to Monmouth to see AA grab a couple of touchdowns

AA did drop some passes in the last few games (esp Fordham?) but he now holds/share all freshman receiving records and made second team All-PL. He's a major talent and let's consider that he should be even better next year. Look how his productivity increased over the season (no doubt got more snaps and targets as year progressed and faced easier competition)
First 5 games= 8 receptions for 108 yards and 0 touchdowns Last 8 games= 41 receptions for 589 yards and 6 touchdowns
