Here's a recent commit in the entering class of 2017:
Staples baseball coach Jack McFarland has a wealth of pitching options to give the ball to when his team needs crucial outs. One of those players emerged as a dependable force in 2016, and his performances didn’t go unnoticed from college scouts. Last week, rising senior Rob Stone agreed to join a quickly rising number of Wreckers baseball standouts who are performing at the collegiate level. Stone committed to Holy Cross last week after visiting the Worcester, Massachusetts School. “He gets better every year,” McFarland said. “Last year he came into his own and threw some big games; this year he’s going to have a bigger role. He’s able to harness his pitch selection and throw more strikes.” After falling with in love with the campus and the Crusaders staff, the 6-foot-2, 195 pound Stone -- who throws a mid 80s fastball -- was delighted to agree to join the team. “I just thought compared to the rest it was a perfect mix of academics and athletics,” said Stone. “Coach (Greg DiCenzo) and I had a connection I didn’t have with anyone else.” A left-handed pitcher, Stone went 2-1 with 21 strikeouts and a 2.63 ERA in 18 innings pitched for the Wreckers last year. He made the varsity team as a sophomore, and admitted there was pressure being on a star-studded team that reached the FCIAC and Class LL title game in 2015. “There was a ton of skill around you felt like one bad outing could send you to JV,” Stone said. “The whole stage of freshman vs varsity; the pressure knowing that this counts towards the playoffs.” It didn’t take long for Stone to thrive under pressure and will be a part of a very experienced Staples club in 2017, looking to make amends for a disappointing 11-11 season a year ago. “I’m really excited about 2017 for Rob, not only on the mound but being a leader in the clubhouse,” McFarland said. Stone has also been a part of travel organization Baseball U last summer and this. 2016 was special in more ways than one for Stone. He got the opportunity to throw to his younger brother Matt, who caught a chunk of games for the Wreckers. It was the first time the duo were on the same team for the season. “He’s helped out a lot,” Stone said. “It was nice; we didn’t fight at all. He sometimes know me better than I know me. He’s good at calling pitches and knows how my ball moves.” Stone will join a Crusaders group that went 30-27 in 2016 and 14-6 in the Patriot League.
