On another note, has a fumbled kickoff ever been overturned by an inadvertent whistle? That was definitely a momentum shifter and something I've never seen before. I think this at least the third time this year that we’ve fumbled a kickoff. That’s gotta stop! I went outside at halftime to hang a couple pairs of shutters, and thankfully missed that. Glad I did, or I might be asking Santa for a new TV!!

Not particularly apropos to the topic, but I’ve been wondering forever if anyone else has thought about this: If I’m a coach, of any sport and at any level, I would absolutely forbid every player and coach on my team from EVER doing the jump up and bump (chest, shoulders, whatever) thing with another player. I’m not sure if it’s ever happened, but virtually every time the bumpers land, it looks awkward and appears to be a blown-out knee waiting to happen. Anyone? Bueller? I sneeze and need to go into traction, so I hear you.

It's a minor bitch, but how often do the PL refs seem to make a call (or not make a call), then consult and then really not explain what happened on the play to anyone beyond themselves???
It's a tough job, I get it...made tougher by recent accommodations for head injuries etc...but I swear I never see these types of situations in other D1 games beside PL ones.
We not only have to up our collective game on the field in the PL but improve the reffing, video replay etc if we want many to take this more seriously imo.

OK, this went well. HC scored three TDs from the time I left for church, to my arrival at Mass. I may make a pilgrimage next week at game time.

Does Coach Chesney hold the HC record for most big comeback wins yet?
Just watch—Gtown will score first next week and some will start calling for Coach’s head....,

OK, I'll ask. Why is the Ram-Crusader Cup award not a CUP? Perhaps, for accuracy, should it be called the Ram-Crusader Metal Football?

It’s not okay to read read the bulletin during mass, but following a contest between ancient Jesuit rivals on your phone is absolutely permitted. You can look it up! And if anyone takes issue, tell that person that the Reverend Francis J. Hart, SJ said it’s okay.

Getting back to officiating, does anyone know exactly WHEN the inadvertent whistle blew?
Given that they had a new kickoff, I would guess it had to be when the ball was in the air, not after it was touched by Alexander.

Getting back to officiating, does anyone know exactly WHEN the inadvertent whistle blew? Given that they had a new kickoff, I would guess it had to be when the ball was in the air, not after it was touched by Alexander. I’ve watched the replay several times now. Based on what I saw, this is what happened: 1) Miles Alexander fumbled. 2) The ball fell about a yard or so directly in front of him. 3) He dove forward to fall on the ball. 4) He fell on the ball. 5) After landing on the ball, the ball squirted free AND, at the same time it squirted free, the whistle blew. 6) The ball was clearly then recovered by Fordham. A very bad break for Fordham. But there was a very clear inadvertent whistle. It was easily heard on replay. It’s my belief that the official who blew the whistle too quickly thought that Alexander had recovered the ball cleanly and was face down on the ground (knees and elbows touching the turf), thus necessitating the whistle. Bottom line: it was a very quick whistle and an error by the ref who blew the whistle. We were very fortunate. I’m not shedding any tears over it though...

I thought I saw it the same way. However, why on earth would there be a do-over on the kickoff. Shouldn't it have been HC ball only a few yards in front of the HC goal line where it was recovered? If he called for a fair catch, does HC get the ball whenever he gets possession of it, even after a fumble? If so, where would it be placed? It was one of the strangest calls I have even seen...but I am certainly not complaining either.

When the Rams had to re-do the kickoff, I assumed that the whistle blew as the initial kickoff was being kicked. Not a rules expert by any stretch but agree with your post, rgs.
If this happened as posted above that the ref blew the whistle thinking Alexander was down after thinking he recovered his own fumble, did they decide to ad hoc the rules thinking that giving the ball back to HC after an obvious fumble would inure to HC benefit since Fordham obviously recovered the fumble? Like little kids not sure what to do - just shout "DO OVER!"
Also interesting that they did not reset the clock back to 15:00. If it was a no play and truly a do over, why did they let the clock run?

Dom Cozier had another great game--terrific runner, waits to see the hole open and then accelerates through it. He's now #8 on all-time rushing yardage list for HC (Steve Buchanan was #10 and drops off the top10 list) with 1,967 yards. With 5.4 yards/carry in his career he's at #3 for his career. This season he's at 6.2, tied for #2 with the great (talk about quick!) Brian Doherty for best yards/carry in a single season. Gill The Thrill has the single season record at 6.3 yards/carry so that is within reach if Dom can break off a few long runs next weekend. He has 889 rushing yards for the season--would love to see him get 1,000 yards as no one has done that since Jerome Fuller's unbelievable 1,465 in 1991.
