I mentioned how I observed Jim Calhoun in a Walmart a few months ago. I admired the steely look of determination on his face but it intimidated away any thought of saying hi.
Today I saw Tom "Satch" Sanders in the Sturbridge (MA) Stop and Shop. He has the complete opposite countenance: pleasant, relaxed, welcoming. I asked if he was Satch, he brightened up and said yes. I told him my elderly friend loves the weekly class he leads at the Senior Center (on issues in aging or something like that.) He took his gloves off, shook my hand and wished me a Merry Christmas.
What a fine gentleman Satch is. He made my day. I didn't mention I was the kid with the transistor radio under the covers listening to Johnny Most call his games. I'm sure he's heard that enough.

Celtics fans will remembering Satch "losing" one of his contact lenses, stopping the game so a search could commence, when Bill Russell needed a breather.....
