If it has been answered on this forum accept my apologizes but....how does HC whiff on Vander Baan after his transfer from BC? Own your backyard. Great question that I have never gotten a good explanation of.

Great question that I have never gotten a good explanation of. The answer/explanation to that question is simple.... When JVB was still in high school at Whitinsville Christian the previous staff (Carmody's staff) tried, but when the coaching staff changed to Nelson's staff that ended!!!

Mixing sports metaphors, "swing and a miss." Frankly, I wasn't especially impressed with Van der Bomb but, that said, he was better than we had.

I'm the last one to ever agree w/Foley but he's not wrong here. 18 year old kids don't live in the long past like so many here do, and aren't going to get excited hearing war stories & looking at black & white film & photos from big wins three generations ago. Yeah, I think CCNY or University of San Francisco could use this pitch too

Nelson is such a great talent evaluator of big men.

Unless Vander Baan was upset with Nelson/HC for backing off the recruiting when he was in high school, I don't think it's that simple. There's no rule that a coaching staff can't recruit a kid in the portal that they didn't recruit in high school

He plucked Rabs, Martindale and Luc out of his backyard. As luck would have it, the two healthy ones discovered they actually wanted to go to school farther from home after all.

Yeah, I think CCNY or University of San Francisco could use this pitch too It was an attempt to stress the importance of a coach being authentic. Kids know if you are speaking the truth and believe what you are pushing. Some might not care as they are just looking for an opportunity, to others it does matter and those are the players I believe we should be recruiting. Obviously, the other approach has given us some terrific young men, however, over the past decade plus it has not provided winning results. While the younger generations are turning the workplace upside down, more people leave a job because of their direct manager, and not for title or money. As I said this generation likely will change this a bit but it should have little or no impact at the PL level. So, I will stand by the thought that authenticity matters in coaching and leading. If a coach doesn't believe in the product, why should a recruit.

I think it was more of "the two healthy ones discovered that their coach was clearly over his head, they were sick of the constant losing, and decided to transfer to another program with some direction."

Yeah, I think CCNY or University of San Francisco could use this pitch too USF made the NCAA Tournament last year as an At-Large and lost in overtime to Murray State. San Fran has 21 NCAA Tournament wins since the last time Holy Cross won the national title. The Crusaders have one tournament win.

Foley, I think you should go with a "winner" and join the USF board and leave Holy Cross' Crossports in the dust. It'll be tough on the rest of us but we'll survive the loss. Go ahead - do the right thing.

Foles: Here’s the sad thing about your post: you clearly did not know off the top of your head the facts you stated. You saw the earlier post that referenced USF and decided to do some exploring of the data bases in hopes of finding some tidbits you could use to fashion yet another puerile post demeaning Holy Cross and its supporters. Where do you get the interest and energy necessary to be such an annoyance?

I am friends with the San Fran photographer (used to work for my company) who travels with the team so I see what they are up to constantly...I thought they were more successful recently but the coach left USF to go to Florida with rumors flying around before their first game in the tournament.

Depending how big your yard is, one could say Batch and Nugent as well. Not quite Worcester, but neither is Dorchester Let's hope both Batch and Nugent graduate from HC. Holy Cross really isn't built for transients. We play in a senior driven league where one of the few potential advantages is retaining players for four years drilling under one head coach or one system and building basketball intelligence and court savvy to compete with teams that might have more talent but are in more flux. Those were advantages HC had under Willard and might possibly have extended under Andy Sachs.

Also, without graduate studies, the absense of non-medical red shirting is less of a factor in BB than FB at HC. Redshirting in FB only requires an extra stay of August-December but BB requires a full fifth academic year and the player ends his fifth year with a B.A. only (does HC still use AB like Hahvahd?) instead of a BA and MA, and has to come up with $75K, a year of his life, and a year's salary lost if he wants an MA in the year after fifth year graduation.
A better approach for HC might be to look at prospects who are a year older and more physically mature because they spent a PG year in prep school or because they are foreign and are a year or two older with experience playing for aged based national teams in international play.
The good American University teams in the Willard years had international players who looked closer to 30 than 20.

Judson and Kyrell didn't "want to go to school farther from home" they wanted to play for a functional college basketball program. Rabs couldn't leave because there isn't a d1 program in the country that would have taken him where he was at (and currently is although I wish him the best). Judson is averaging 6 ppg in a much better conference and ky is averaging 12. and that's just the tip of the iceberg. hopefully the next coaching staff can not only bring in talent, but KEEP THEM AROUND

The thing that will always stick out to me is when I spoke to a walk-on who graduated last year, and he said that he had almost 40 teammates. 40. forty. FORTY. its very possible that most if not all of this current roster is gone by tip off next year, which could attract a coach who wants to build a roster his way, or it could be the ultimate deterrent. lord willing it isn't the latter. Brett and his staff tried their best but the house needs to be cleared.
