Analogy to old Westerns where the cavalry charges to the rescue. Little bearing here, since we are not speaking about the current players as helpless settlers.

I just want to host a PL home playoff game in whatever round. Always have to play on the road.

I am afraid that an away playoff game is almost automatic this year. But, I agree that a home game could be special.

Maybe yes. But we’d be stuck as a 170-210 ranked team, likely with no championships. I hope we have higher aspirations than that. Maybe that is the Patriot League way now. Lehigh had its big moment and has done little since. Bucknell’s glory days seem far away. Lafayette is content with decades of sub-mediocrity. The academies are content with mediocrity. Colgate is a good PL team but not a real good team. American, Boston, Loyola, who cares? Why Reed and Langel have not left for better jobs is a mystery. League fans get to watch some good games and good kids. Maybe that has to be enough. Basically it in a nutshell.....it's very low D1 hoop any way you slice it. HC hoop deserves bettah but we are essentially wedded to the PL as an institution now. Men's hoop lost by far the most when we joined/formed this league.

This conversation was going on on the Davidson message board back in 1989 (oh wait, no internet back then). Seriously, if we are winning 18-20 games 2 years from now, will this be forgiven/forgotten? I think the "issue" at hand is not a PL thing as much as it is the overall D-1 world these days. Not a good time to be low D-1 imho with the current transfer process (and I felt this way before I had even heard of Drew Lowder). More and more, it's looking like low D-1 is being looked at like a group of prep schools by many prospects, just part of the path on the way to the top. I think some kind of reform is needed, but since it's not hurting the big boys, nothing will be done. It just seems like either the top of D-! needs to break off and become the pro organization it has become, or the bottom needs to break away from it and exist in a world where their concerns are addressed. Back to our situation. I looked around at schools that have a first year coach (who is a first year head coach, like CBN), and found about 15 or so schools. Many are floundering, some are doing ok, and a couple are even doing quite well. One is W&M under Dane Fischer (at least I think this is his first gig; I'm sure bison will be on me in a nanosecond if I'm wrong). If I'm not mistaken, he had to deal with some defections right off the bat, but has them at something like 14-6. Why couldn't we do that? Well, just a quick look at their roster shows they have 2 seniors averaging around 30 minutes a game (one being CAA POY candidate Nathan Knight), and 2 grad students both averaging over 20 minutes a game. Looking at a lot of the other teams' rosters, you see quite a few jucos sprinkled around. HC? Well, we are now feeling the short term effects of the dismissals of former players, with just 1 senior. Grad transfers? Wasn't possible. Jucos? You tell me. HC just wasn't set up for a quick fix. I too feel like CBN could have possibly squeezed out a couple of more victories if that trumped the long term goal, but hopefully his strategy is the right one. I do think it's on him to improve the D going forward.

The words stepping stone comes to mind and not just for players. See FADNP. I think it was an unintended consequence of de emphasizing athletics. Without researching it I don't think it has really been a big issue with our athletes. A Holy Cross degree is a very attractive piece of parchment.

Let me stipulate right out of the gate that while I don’t live in the past, i do have a memory and it bothers me to hear the words “mid major” and “Holy Cross” in the same sentence and absolutely pains me to hear “LOW mid major” and “Holy Cross.”
I can certainly accept, even embrace, being in the Patriot League. I cannot accept an even less than mediocre results.
As I have posted elsewhere, the blame goes far and wide. Just totally unacceptable.
I would certainly give serious consideration to withholding my contributions to the CAF for basketball but that might make me one of the many factors contributing to this failed program. And, it IS failing and has been for some time.
Whether Nelson, his assistants, the players, administration can get their act together and win is not a given.

Without researching it I don't think it has really been a big issue with our athletes. A Holy Cross degree is a very attractive piece of parchment. Three basketball players in the last six months have decided it isn't - or at least no more attractive than the ones offered by Illinois, Fairfield, and that citadel of higher learning, Boise State (where I expect Lowder will end up).
Recent recruits have not been vetted thoroughly, imho, for make-up and character - I am hopeful that Nelson is committed to changing that.

Make that four if you include Lovisolo, who is currently playing for Union.
I agree regarding vetting. Too many recruits have left in the last four years. A culture and recruiting focus change is needed with the Basketball programs.

Perhaps that was known when they hired a new coach. It is not as though an y of what is being presented here was a secret.

Good point on three recent transfers. I should have been clearer in pointing out I don’t think we have had many kids “use” their first year or two at HC to move up to a high level D 1 program. It seems to me many of our transfers have been the result of a coaching change and have involved making a lateral move. The obvious exception is Grandison transferring to Illinois.

I got the intended "cavalry" metaphor, but I was struggling with "Calvary", which I thought was a location in Jerusalem. Although, I see that Merriam-Webster's second definition is "an experience of usually intense mental suffering". I assume that must have been the angle he was going for.

No, probably just a misspelled word or typographical error. I wouldn’t nitpick for any deeper meaning.

To get back to the low ranking......I ask again, if the waters settle down, and in 2 years we are a legit contender, will that make things cool for everyone? Maybe year 1 in CBN's eyes is just a boot camp of sorts....you know, to achieve The Full Nelson you must first make it through Camp Nelson.

/\ By contender, do you mean a winning record in the PL, and overall record over .500 and a couple of wins in the PL tourney? I'd like to see that next year but we'll need to land a few guys who will be above-average PL players their very first year. Right now, IMHO, we have one.

Yes, I would say so.....
I did say 2 years from now, but at least for me, I never like to be shackled by some rigid timeline. I think some people think in year 1 you win X games, in year 2 you win X+Y games, in year 3 X+Y+Z, etc. For me, I just want to see signs that consistent improvement in the overall program is being made.
I know it's not showing up in the W-L record, but I do think some small strides are being made, in terms of transition into what CBN wants. The big bugaboo, of course, is defense. He is going to have to figure that out at some point, or it could derail all of his plans.

I almost wish HC could have played Florida during CBN's time there, so he could have experienced the RW defense up close and personal. Maybe that would have made an impression, and stuck in his mind.

Hopefully not diverting from the subject here, but I also find most interesting the way CBN is coaching the very end of these "no longer in doubt" games, meaning, his steadfast refusal to empty what's left of the bench (even after the other team does so). Not saying it's wrong, but I don't recall another coach so consistently coaching it that way. I also wonder if it will be his normal SOP, or if it is some chapter of "Camp Nelson" (you either earn minutes or not, no such thing as garbage time(?)).

Even with the no such thing as garbage time theory, there's something to be said for throwing walk-on's a bone. Might light a fire under the scholarship players' asses who let the blowout occur in the first place. Might further encourage the competition that CBN wants. Might push the walk-ons up a few rungs. Maybe a combination of them all.
NAD, your question to the posters if they'd take a chill pill this season for some real accomplishments in two years is one that I think is rhetorical. It must be. What poster wouldn't want that progress? My gripe is that progress has not been made. Taking the macro view, when the losses piled up, and "bad" losses were suffered, we thought we at least had players that were loyal to the program, established leadership, and a vision. Now, we have even more losses, and the consistency by way of leadership/brass/commitment/strategy/identity/vision/and a culture are missing. What's left to lose? I hate to even think about it because it seemingly can't get much worse.
But one of my favorite lines is one that's germane this week for MLK day, and I will paraphrase: the passing of time won't solve any problems. Somebody has to actually do something, and do it successfully. With this program, the players need to play better, coaches need to coach better, recruiters need to recruit better, schedulers need to schedule better, marketers need to market better, funders need to fund better and so on and so forth. If I track the history over a longer historical period, smoothing out a blip for a magical march run a few seasons back, the trend line is in the wrong direction, and near the bottom of the X axis.

I guess what I'm asking, in a convoluted (sp?) way, is: am I the only one out there who is still reasonably optimistic about the future, and not overly worked up over these rankings? For me, if the team is not winning, I don't care if they are ranked 343, 278, 353 or whatever. I wasn't too worried about this years rankings when CBN was hired, and when JG and CG left they became even less important to me. And, I know it's hard to make a case for improvement when the wins have been almost non existent, but I still maintain the guys are making progress from when I saw them at the open practices in pre-season (offensively speaking). I will concede it's meaningless if something isn't done about the defense, whether it's scheme or targeting it in recruiting. I laugh as I type this, because this is literally the only facet of my life where I take the glass half full approach. Pro sports? A Red Sox pitcher gets to a 3-0 count on hitter, I'm swearing and switching the channel. Pats D gives up a first down? I'm going out to kitchen. And don't ask me about being a gnat in corporate America.

I´m still cautiously optimistic. I think / hope BN is building a culture.
But there were those still believing in Carmody last year and preaching patience........ and Milan before that. If it doesn´t work this time, I can´t promise patience next time.

I feel optimistic with this coaching staff and plan to give them the patience to which they are entitled. I have seen (and read that others have seen) improvement from a healthy Butler, from JP, CN and MF. That is a start and oof this continues through the team, next year's recruits could make this a very different picture. At least that is what I hope. I also try not to pay too much attention to the apostles of despair who see top find a negative spin on just about everything. I have been a fan for over 50 years so I have seen ups and downs in HC hoops. I even remember after an Amy game how some said that RW was a pooroffennsive coach and that HC needed a new coach if they are ever going to improve. Now it appears he has gotten a lot better as a coach after leaving HC. Keep hope alive.
