A tweet above said he had an official visit to App State. Have to presume that meant an offer. Possibly Presbyterian also

We really should pump the brakes a bit. A 2020 PG with no offers at this point in the season - especially one who will be expected to play significant minutes here immediately - is a something of a crap shoot. It's a good test of Evans'/Nelson' eyes and judgment for fit, what we need the kid to do right out of the gate in our particular situation - distribute with limited TOs, keep in front of his assignment defensively, and play with intensity at all times, at both ends. He doesn't need to score much. Going on an official visit to Appalachian State should be confirmation that he had an offer there. It doesn’t even look like there was note of an offer from HC, so it doesn’t seem like he was pushing all of his recruitment out publicly. Perhaps there were more teams involved, perhaps not. Certainly not a sure thing, but the tweets in my last post say that his recruitment has picked up since December, indicating that he may be a late bloomer on his way up (which is the opposite of Lowder who was a fast riser then had a serious injury that may or may not have caused his recruitment to fall off). With where our program has been the last 10 years (and especially this year), it’s difficult to have a line of blue chip recruits knocking at the door, so we’re going to need to find a couple guys who are on their way up and trust that Nelson and Evans are identifying the right attributes for this type of recruit. The tweets posted here indicate that he is the type of player/person that Nelson is trying to build the program around, playing football and basketball is hopefully further evidence that he will bring a level of toughness the program has been sorely lacking, and given that Nelson’s first three recruits all appear to be high quality, I have to have some faith that he knows what he’s doing.

Appalachian State is member of the Sun Belt Conference and Presbyterian is a member of the Big South.
How does the Patriot League rank compared to these two conferences?

WG, no offers? I thought he accepted the offer he got from Holy Cross.

He doesn't need to score much. Sure, I'm all for pumping the brakes and not anointing RJJ as "the next Torey Thomas" before he even sets foot on campus. But let's not conflate the kid's talent with the program's need... except in the sense that if this kid (or whatever other targets BN had) was a riser or sitting on the fence waiting for more offers, BN could essentially dangle a four-year starting spot to his preferred target. Here's hoping they chose wisely, and this is another piece of the puzzle filled in as the next contending HC roster starts to take shape.
I also like that, even though we had an acute need, we didn't go the route of the undersized Milan-era PG. Having a legit 6'0 PG (assuming that height is close to accurate) leaves you open to more options on the defensive end.

I agree, Ray. I think I have started to get an allergic reaction to just seeing "5'10".

The good news is we have 4 2021 slots if the staff still feels the need to beef up the position later on.

The good news is we have 4 2021 slots Unless we do not have and use a fifth this year. Then we would have 5 for 2021

Biggest position of need on the roster hopefully he can fill or at least help fill the void. I assume he's playing against good competition as Jay Bilas' son and Giants QB Daniel Jones played together at Charlotte Latin.

Rare to get two at once. so is austin butler. we have two very tough, intense, get in your face, physical players. i would love a roster full of them, but i was far more concerned about having an actual point guard (which we now have) on the roster who can produce (hopefully johnson is that guy).

"He’s a strong-bodied point guard prospect that can operate in a variety of different roles and make his presence felt without needing to score . . . He’s an excellent all-around defender that knows how to mirror his assignment and eliminate all operating space. . . ."
Cautiously optimistic.

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS Prep Rewind: On Senior Night, Charlotte Latin tops rival Providence Day at home BY STEVE LYTTLE AND LANGSTON WERTZ JR. FEBRUARY 07, 2020 11:01 PM Read more here: www.charlotteobserver.com/sports/high-school/article239923543.html#storylink=cpyLater this weekend, Charlotte Latin boys’ basketball coach Chris Berger will try to convince a group of his peers that the Hawks are deserving of a high seed in the playoffs. What might constitute Berger’s sales pitch was on display Friday night in Latin’s 71-59 victory over CISAA rival Providence Day. An experienced, cool group of veteran players? The Hawks were all of that, refusing to fall apart after the visiting Chargers had bolted to a 15-5 lead after one quarter. Standout player? How about 6-0 senior guard R.J. Johnson, a Holy Cross commit who took over the game in the second quarter, scoring 24 of his team’s 31 points in a big surge that put Latin ahead to stay? N.C. Independent School Athletic Association coaches will gather Sunday in Greensboro and determine seeds for the playoffs that begin Tuesday. The Hawks (20-7, 7-3) are likely to be somewhere in the No. 4 or 5 spot. Berger would prefer 4 over 5. The top four seeds in the 4A division get byes in the first two rounds and then a home game. Seeds in the 5 through 8 spots get just a first-round bye. Charlotte Latin was 10-2 at home this season. “Well, we’ll make our case,” Berger said. “We played a strong schedule -- Ardrey Kell, some good teams in Atlanta, and our conference. I hope that helps. “But either way, we’ll be ready for whatever happens.” The Hawks got a good warmup for the playoffs from the Chargers (12-13, 4-6), a young team that has been streaky this season. Providence Day led 23-13 with 5:26 left in the first half, but then Johnson took control. He was brilliant throughout the second quarter, but in the final three minutes of the half, he scored four baskets, had an assist and a steal, and then connected on a long three-pointer as the buzzer sounded. “He has that ‘it’ factor,” Berger said of Johnson. “He’s a natural leader, and it’s been fun to see him grow over the four years. I just wish he wasn’t a senior.” The Chargers battled back to within 45-43 late in the third quarter, but a pair of Providence Day turnovers and two Charlotte Latin baskets opened the gap. The Chargers never got close again. THREE WHO MATTERED R.J. Johnson, Charlotte Latin: He took over the game in the key second quarter. Johnson scored 24 of his 31 points in that period, hitting 9-of-10 from the floor, including a trio of three-pointers. Michael Zanoni, Providence Day: Zanoni scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed six rebounds. Bennett Smith, Charlotte Latin: Smith a senior, was the inside force for the Hawks. He had a game-high 11 rebounds along with his nine points. Worth mentioning ▪ Providence Day is a young team. The Chargers started two sophomores and two juniors. One of those 10th-graders is Zanoni, who Latin coach Chris Berger called “a dynamite player.” ▪ It was Senior Night at Charlotte Latin, and the Hawks started five seniors. ▪ The Hawks had a strong shooting night. They hit 26-of-51 from the floor, for better than 50 percent. Providence Day connected on 17-of-37. ▪ The Hawks have won seven of their last nine games. They beat Providence Day 62-49 on Jan. 21 in the teams’ other meeting. ▪ Providence Day won the girls’ game 70-31, behind 19 points from Andri Levitz. Mary Schleusner had nine points for the Hawks. They said it “We’re pretty deep. We go eight, nine of 10 deep, and we try to wear out the other team.” -- Charlotte Latin coach Chris Berger What’s next? Both teams will play in the NCISAA 4A playoffs. The first round is Tuesday, with the second round Thursday and the quarterfinals next Saturday.
