It's cyclical. I'd equate the last 3-4 years of Colgate basketball to Holy Cross Football 2007-2010. Generally awful results for 20 years, a few years of success and then mediocre.
Obviously Colgate basketball is at its peak right now - kind of like HC football 2009. We'll have to see if Colgate can sustain it's success in basketball over the next 5 years or do they drop back to mediocre.
And if you think about it, yes Holy Cross fields 2 additional teams in PL competition so we have more opportunities to earn points but, not counting this year, if
1. Colgate has been kicking Holy Cross' butt in Mens Hoops & Football the last 3-4 years and
2. Colgate has been placing in roughly the same spot (with the similar point totals) as HC in the President's Cup standings over that period.
3. Holy Cross must be doing better than Colgate in a number of sports.
therefore, Colgate
1. Doesn't have some secret formula for success - other than perhaps coaching (a big part of which is recruiting).
2. Doesn't care that much more about winning vs. participation when compared to Holy Cross
Colgate has had it all over us in coaches wrt recruiting - Carmody said he didn't like recruiting, which showed and for whatever reason, Gilmore's recruiting dropped off over the last 6-7 years of his tenure.
And before you do all your comparisions of Colgate in the PL vs. HC ... in the 6 full seasons since the PL added BU & Loyola
Over 22 PL sports Colgate has averaged 3.79 points per sport in the PL Presidents' Cup
Over 24 PL Sports, Holy Cross has averaged 3.30 points per sport in the PL Presidents' Cup
Not exactly blowing us out of the water - other than in the sports about which many here care most.
