In terms of FCS ranking, UIW is closest to HC of that group of schools. By a lot.

Since Tim mentioned that UIW is closet to HC of that group, can anyone name what HC and UIW at one time had in common? Of note, UIW went through quite a institutional transformation over the last 20 years. Maybe a school to play, if we want to enhance our recruiting profile in the Lone Star state.

IIRC Dr. Bernard Cooke, who taught in the Religious Studies dept at HC in the 1980s, lived in San Antonio at the time of his death. Was he teaching at Incarnate Word in his retirement?

Dr. Cooke did teach at UIW, during his career. He lived in San Antonio barn at the Village at Incarnate Word, at the time of his passing.
Outstanding that you came up with the reference between Dr. Cooke, HC and Incarnate Word.
There is something else that HC and UIW had in common. Anyone else care to ponder?

Outstanding that you came up with the reference between Dr. Cooke, HC and Incarnate Word. When I see that a former teacher has passed away, I take note. I took a class with Dr. Cooke (Sacraments & Sacramentality, IIRC) that i really enjoyed. He was a very well-known theologian, so remembering he as in San Antonio at the time o& his death, I took a somewhat educated guess and you know what they say about blind squirrels.

The Crusader mascot was adopted in 1980, and was changed to the Cardinals in 2004. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_the_Incarnate_Word

Obviously, around here there are plenty of nuts 🥜🤣 When I was at HC, we had several students from San Antonio. It’s on my list of places I would like to visit.

Don’t go in summer, Crucis. Riverwalk and Alamo nice.
Just before we went for a week on a combo business/vacation trip was warned by a friend who lived there: “Don’t believe the temperature on the bank buildings. They aren’t allowed to show higher than 99 degrees but it will be a lot hotter than that.” 😥

Hey, Rich --
Yes, things are very quiet. Don't really understand how teams can fix recruiting goals without knowing whether 2020 seniors will get an extra year of eligibility and how many might come back for the 2021 season. I have noticed that it often happens that when Holy Cross offers a potential recruit, Fordham has either already offered or makes an offer shortly thereafter.

Mostly I think it is a simularity in tactics and needs. The outlier is Gate. We havent bumped into them very often. Scanning their offer list, they dont hit any PL teams often. Fingers crossed coaches are teasing a 2* ILB from Ohio. He is announcing tomorrow night. PL teams do seem to be recruiting blind. Is PL going to follow NCAA lead? If we play an 8 game Spring sched, I doubt more than a few would opt for another yearif PL follows NCAA.The elephant is everyone else. PL should make at least some adjustments to both caps applicable to current players. Honestly doubt PL will do anything significant. Every school has been hit by less income and increased costs.

Hi Breezy: I thought the NCAA had already ruled that all current players on the 2020 roster were given an extra year of eligibility, which includes 2020 seniors. If that is correct, I guess the real issue is how many seniors will elect to seek a 5th year of eligibility at HC or will look to play elsewhere. In any event, if all current roster members have that 5th year option it would seem to me that this would affect recruiting numbers for the next 4 years through 2024.

The issue is whether the PL will change its by laws. If not, players will get the extra year of eigibility from the NCAA but wont be able to play in the PL. PL at present only allows med shirts for a player to get a 5th year exemption. Going forward, I agree the uncertainty as to the available roster/schollie slots in any of the next 4 years woould be a major issue.

I think a player can qualify for a 5th year not only for medical reasons but also if they can show academic necessity/hardship, which can be satisfied by pursuing a double major or a minor which requires an extra semester of classes to complete. That being said, the PL should step up and eliminate these hurdles given the unique circumstances and the recent eligibility changes issued by the NCAA.

I think the PL will come up with policy that attempts to minimize the disruption and the expense caused by Covid. So increasing the 60 is not likely; increasing the 90 for a year or two may help reduce the disruption & perhaps competitive disadvantage with other leagues.
Granting seniors an academic hardship due to the current Covid situation would be part of the policy. For the others, such a hardship would be case by case, i.e. make it now or lose it.

I think a player can qualify for a 5th year not only for medical reasons but also if they can show academic necessity/hardship, which can be satisfied by pursuing a double major or a minor which requires an extra semester of classes to complete. under regular PL rules, a player can only return for a 5th year if they had a season-ending injury. Once that hurdle is cleared, then they also have to demonstrate an academic reason for needing to come back. That is where the “academic necessity” comes in. Different PL schools have different standards. Bucknell, for example, will not allow a double major as a reason, and 99% of the time will not allow grad school. That is one of the various teams have almost never had a fifth year player.
