"Karnik the Magnificent" is also a grad transfer. At least BC is calling him that and he's presumably eligible right away.

Several articles during the transfer process said he was not a grad transfer. Fans on the Lehigh board didn't know he was graduating, so I've been taking a wait and see attitude. Has BC issued a statement saying he is a grad transfer or is that info from tweets from people like Goodman? Fwiw, Verbal Commits also does not list him as a grad transfer.

It's just mostly pathetic....the Patriot League in basketball is so bad....

Goodman tweet and BC Interruption.
You know, the bio of the kid would tend to say you are right. Played hs in 2016-17, then at LU in 17-18, 18-19 and 19-20.
Only way he could be a grad transfer would be if he actually gets is bachelors degree next month, right?

being reported today by Jeff Goodman and Jon Rothstein - some good news !
The Division 1 Board of Directors has recommended that changes to the waiver process for transfers suggested by the Transfer Waiver Working Group are not appropriate at this time, per release.

Might this cause some players to attempt to leave the portal: "never mind"?

Might this cause some players to attempt to leave the portal: "never mind"? One would certainly think so. As we know, it's a risk to put your name in the portal, as you lose the guarantee of your scholarship at your current school. But it seems likely that at least some players in the portal were influenced by the possibility (even seemed a likelihood in some circles) that they would not have to sit a year.
I'm not attaching any specific names to that, but on a percentage basis, it seems likely that some players in the portal will now look to go back to their former schools if the door is still open.

Seems like it's just tabled until May, not dead by any means.

If someone like Niego wants to play a 5th year without sitting out 2020-21, he would be well-advised to ask back into HC for 20-21, get his degree and 'grad transfer' for 21-22

Seems like it's just tabled until May, not dead by any means. There will apparently be a May 20th vote, but the NCAA Board of Directors - which has a lot of influence - has just stated that changes at this time are not appropriate. Goodman's sources, fwiw, say "it is highly unlikely" the rule will be adopted at this time.

Sadly, I agree there will be no returns...much as I might like to see one or two. OK, Pridgen.

How can we miss them if they won't go away?

In general, this makes transfer candidates less attractive. A school has to be willing to use one of its 13 scholarships for a year without a player to show for it. Some schools might think 12 scholarship players is enough. We haven't seen too much of that around here lately as scholarships that opened up were almost immediately given out

My guess is it did so for many years.

I think the number used to be more, not less. 11 would not be feasible, even with walk ons, if the coach can get reasonably talented ones. There are injuries, transfers, etc (see HC 2019-20)which would make scrimmaging 5 qualified players against the first string highly unlikely.

Something rare has happened. 3 solid players have returned to their schools after entering the portal These are from Wichita State, Loyola Marymount and Bowling Green. Some have predicted BG as a likely Sweet 16 team now.

It's similar to entering your name into the draft without hiring an agent to gauge interest then deciding whether to go forward or return to school.
