Just to throw out a name, to be different: how about marathoner Bill Rodgers?

Though Rodgers is known for his Bos marathon wins, he's from Hartford, not Boston.

The Greatest Generation is leaving us too soon. I think most surviving members would put Ted Williams as number one, not completely due to generational bias but because of the impact he had on society as a whole.
When Ted reached the pinnacle of baseball it was truly the national pastime and dominated all other professional sports. Ted also gave up five years of his prime to serve his country in two wars. There used to be a Boston Globe Sports columnist, Harold Kaese, one of Ted's "Knights of the keyboard" who wrote several columns projecting Ted's production if those prime years were available to him. He would have rivalved or surpassed Babe Ruth.
In 1975 I accompanied a friend to Nova Scotia. His family were "Two Boater Irish" which means they were so poor they could only afford the cheaper fare to Halifax, NS on their coffin ship leaving Ireland instead of the full fare to Boston or New York. We took a trip up to see his relatives who stayed in NS instead of working and saving and then emigrating on a second boat to Boston, in a tiny hamlet on the Atlantic coast.
The two old female cousins who lived in the family homestead had three framed photos on the wall: Pope John, John F. Kennedy and Ted Williams. It turns out WHDH-850 AM, the Red Sox flagship station at the time had a 5O,000 watt north/south directional signal and came in clear as a bell over the ocean in NS. They were die hard Red Sox, Ted Williams and Kennedy fans.
So, I would put Ted with Brady, Russell and Orr as arguable "GOATS" in their sports and if you need to emphasize championships in addition to individual greatness, I would make the top four Russell, Brady, Williams and Orr. Bobby won a couple of cups but he didn't have the longevity of Ted with or without Wartime service. I'll finish the other six after a break to obey Dr. Fauci and wash my hands.

I believe if they kept batting averages in the old days like they do today, Williams would have won the batting title in 1949. Back in those days, an RBI on an out (like a sacrifice fly) counted as an at bat. Williams supposedly had sufficiently more of those than the guy who won the batting title, that using the no plate appearance rule of today, he would have won the 1949 batting title. Since he won the RBI and HR races that year, it would have meant his third triple crown. I don't think he is the best baseball player ever, but he is the hitting GOAT

No hitter can come close to Babe Ruth and I doubt any ever will. On top of that, of course, he was a great pitcher

Only if a prime qualification is the ability to get in front of a TV camera. I’d prefer Nancy Kerrigan - assuming we can’t claim Joanie Benoit.

Cousy Heinsohn Jack Barry Osmanski George Connor Togo Ron Perry Ron Perry Jon Morris Eddie Anderson Go Cross Go! If some of these are worthy of consideration, should we also think about Harry Agganis?

Might need to get a female athlete in here. I'll probably get ripped for this, but I don't see it. The nature of these lists favor pro's. Olympians just don't perform enough. Names brought up. Joan Benoit. She competed well in the Boston Marathon, but unlike Bill Rogers, Benoit never lived in MA. She's a New Englander and her Red Sox hat make people think Boston, but she's always a Maine girl. Kerrigan medaled in the worlds and Olympics, but she doesn't come close to my list. . If Serena Williams or Martina Navratilova were Boston people, maybe. Failing that tiny group, No. I don't put a female in the group just for the sake of having a female

Don’t disagree, Tom.
Just won’t be surprised if the Globe has a woman in their top ten because it’s the year 2020 and they may want to protect themselves from any backlash.

I went to high school with her brothers. Her family owned for decades a large clothing store in downtown Portland. I think she won the marathon just weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on her knee.

The wuestion is whether New York’s extreme advantage in baseball offsets Boston’s advantage in basketball and Orr. Football—really have to mull that face off

Three Patsies players at most would make a combined Top 10 of both markets: Brady, and maybe Hannah and Vinatieri. That's it.

Besides Brady no other Patsie is lock for Boston's top 10. By any measure LT, the Golden Boy from Southern Cal, and Don Maynard should all be in a NY top 10.

I met Don Maynard when he was in his mid 40's and he looked like he could have put his uniform on and gone out to catch a long TD..
Wesley Walker is another Jet to consider for the NY team --like Maynard a real deep threat
