Today we are mourning the fact that it’s not the first day of the baseball season.
Sigh.
But John Gardner send us the wonderful video below, from the Smithsonian, about Ted Williams.
A historic moment in the nation’s favorite pastime.
Which reminded me of the time I think President Bush was the most annoyed with me.
I mean, REALLY ANNOYED.
We were at a Houston Astros vs. St. Louis Cardinals game, and Albert Pujols hit a towering homerun.
I just happen to mention to the 41st President that I had just read if Pujols stayed healthy, he likely would retire as the best hitter whoever played the game.
He could not believe his chief of staff could say something so utterly stupid.
He lectured me on the life and times of Ted Williams, and informed me that no one would ever outhit Ted Williams.
Ever.
This subject came up every time we went to a game together or even saw a baseball.
And then HBO did a documentary about Ted Williams, and sent President Bush an invitation to the premiere.
I found it on my desk one day, with his handwritten yellow stickie note on top of it.
Do I still have it? Thankfully, yes. I found it almost exactly a year ago when I was packing my office, stuck in some random folder.
It’s now a prized possession, and hangs in my office at home, with all my other baseball stuff.
Here is a photo, with the video below.
And don’t despair.
One day we’ll hear the words, “Let’s play ball.”

P.S. And for the record … he was right.
