A big-bodied, physical guy who attacks the rim.

I think he's got quite a motivating personal story and that can work to our advantage

A big-bodied, physical guy who attacks the rim. Not something we had much of last year. We can certainly use an infusion of someone who can outmuscle people. Wish him the best in his Holy Cross career.

Presume this means Montgomery, Stevens, and (probably) Rodgers are out of the picture now.
May have one more scholarship to give for a promising big.

If Niego is a junior next year and Copeland doesn’t return, I might hold it so we can give three to the class of 2025. These would be kids we have been recruiting for more than a year by the time signing day rolls around in November. We now have a junior class which may even have two scholarship players in it.

I hope Townsel turns out to be a steal and big contributor, but at the very least this is another big step for Nelson being able to actually run D1 practices next year.
Comparison of our wings at the end of last season vs how we will look in the fall End of last year: Pridgen, Wade, Le Seann, Hart Next year: Pridgen, Wade, Butler, Martindale, Humphrey, Townsel, Hart
Having competitive practices (virtually impossible last year) will go a long way in making the team more competitive in games.

Then again, the big man from Canada I just read about in the 2020 recruiting thread, might be an interesting addition for next year.

Great news! As posted previously, I love that he is eligible to play right away. Kudos to the staff for thinking outside the box a little.

Can disagree about positions, but believe this is where we are at the moment (not including Hart). Still room for at least one more scholarship
PG - Johnson, Reilly* SG - Wade, Copeland*, Humphrey, Townsel SF - Pridgen, Butler, Martindale PF - Faw, Niego C - Rabinovich
* Status uncertain.
2020 Open Offers? SG Jalen "Bo" Montgomery (TN - Lausanne Collegiate School), 6-5. Offers from Howard, Campbell. (Likely no further interest) PG. JaJuan Rodgers (MA - Winchendon), 6-2. Offers from Marist, E. Michigan, Quinnipiac, The Mount
Interest? SG Brian Stevens (MA - Springfield Commonwealth), 6-4. Offer from Assumption. (Likely no further interest) PF Louth-Mohamed Coulibaly (CAN - Canada Topflight Academy), 6-8. Offers from Delaware State, Youngstown State, BU, South Dakota

Welcome aboard Malcolm, truly out of the box thinking by the staff, can't remember the last Juco on scholarship if there's ever been one. Let's hope Malcolm' s career trajectory follows that of the last Malcolm we had, perhaps another late bloomer.

Really like that Nelson seems to be bringing in kids who don't "socially distance" themselves from contact on the court. Getting tougher, more physical, and laying some bodies on bodies would be a welcome development.

If he opts to hold the other scholarship(s), and I am not sure he will since we all want 20 wins before 2023, could we see a team with 4 guard type players on the floor at once next season?
If he can't get the big he wants does he go with Faw, Niego, and Rabinovich at the 5 next year? Will he play Joe at the 2-3-4 next year? With the additions does he feel comfortable to attack and pressure on defense?
I can't believe I just said that given the past product, but with the additions that offer length, and quickness maybe it is possible.

Martindale is more of a 2/3 so potentially a spot for Montgomery /Stevens if we don’t get a BIG or Rodgers/Another PG still a mystery if we have more than 1scholarship remaining

Really like that he will be three years out of high school — this program has been in desperate need of maturity, and by the sounds of tweets about him and RJ Johnson (for example), Nelson appears to be making character a priority. I’ll take a mature kid who has busted his ass for a D1 scholarship over all of the prima donnas who have infiltrated (and then gotten thrown out of and/or walked away from) this program over the last 5+ years. Long odds that Townsel is the missing piece to get us back to the NCAA Tournament, but a very good use of a scholarship for two years based on the current information out there and our current situation.

The Townsel recruitment reminds me a little of when the original RJ went to UConn. Their roster was decimated, they needed bodies and they took a kid who they knew would bust his butt every day and provide some needed leadership to a younger roster. In both cases, it was a relatively short-term commitment in a time of uncertainty. It worked out well for UConn and I hope it works out well here for us.
