I know this is only a hypothetical but.....Thought in the Patriot League athlete are supposed to be representative of the student body as a whole? I wonder if recruited athletes who have been offered a scholarship can and do get placed on the waiting list like other applicants? No.

I caught the 2nd half of UNH's game at Princeton in late December. The Wildcats were overmatched and ended up losing by 40 points to a Princeton team that closed the season nationally ranked. But the Lady Wildcats played hard right until the end and continued to execute their offense. The bench players cheered on their teammates. In short, they looked well coached from what I could see.

Turn around? Magarity is third out of sixth UNH coaches in winning percentage. She is Average at best. Yes, turned around a team that had several straight losing seasons. You need to actually look at the records of her predecessor at UNH. In the 3 years before Magarity came to UNH the Wildcats were 24-67 (13-35 in league games). In her second year, she had them post a winning record (16-14 / 9-7 in their league). In her 4th year they were 19-12 / 12-4) and in her 5th year they were 17-12/9-5). Then in 2016-2017 they were 26-6 / 15-1 and league champs and she won multiple coach of the year honors. Turn around? Yes, without a doubt. Or you want to talk about her last two seasons? In 2019-2020, she went 10-19 with 7-9 in America East and in 2018-2019 went 6-24 with a 3-13 record in America East. So which way you want it? A coach that is 16-43 and 10-22 in America East over the LAST two years or the one that had ONE good season in 2016-17?

Magarity was one more bad season away from getting fired at UNH and now gets a 5 year deal coaching our team, and y’all like this hire? I just don’t get it.
So when HC gets killed next year by BC but the girls “play hard” you’ll be happy? Sorry, but I’d rather take the wins we saw with AM to go along with it.

Think about this, the Albany head coach went to Boston College and the UNH coach goes to Holy Cross. Same conference much different caliber of hire. And yes, BC is going to spank Holy Cross next year.

Is it because that is standard these days or has HC released that information? If that is so, AM could have been two coronavirus cancelled games away from a secure future. I hope she gets the Merrimack job and I really hope there were contingencies built into this contract to protect Holy Cross. It would be one thing if there was a date certain for the campus to open and/or Patriot League BB to commence, but there is neither. "We had to let manager Joe Morgan go because we couldn't take the chance of (minor league manager) Butch Hobson getting hired by someone else." -Former Red Sox General Manager Lou Gorman. I wonder who the competition we beat out for Coach Magarity was?

Whodathunkit that the women's basketball hire would make for such a lively discussion.
And here I thought there wasn't much interest in WBB.

I like the hire given our budget and the limitations because of the virus for all those who have such a high regard for AM, let's see where she lands - I think she's 53 so she should have plenty of years left in the business as far as the win over BC goes, anyone out there think we would have stayed within 15 points if we played them in Jan/Feb ? - yes.it was a very good win but we caught them very early and foley knows that as well.

Also helped by Guy getting in foul trouble & Soule getting injuried & only playing 4 mins. However, the did pretty much stink in their OOC schedule but jellied in conference play.

We caught both BC and Illinois napping. Who gets credit for that, the barista at Starbucks where the team stopped before the game or the head coach who prepared the team for BC and Illinois?

Yea....BC was a much different animal at the end of the year. I was working that game for BC so I was there. When I found out she won ACC COY, I was stunned as I didn't recognize they went 20-12 with a 11-7 mark in the ACC. They made the semifinals of the ACC tourney and was on the bubble for an at-large berth to the NCAA.

I don’t think letting Coach Mac go had much to do with her record. I don’t have any real insight into what happened with BG and Parks and all of that but I think Blossom decided a while back that she wasn’t going to be his permanent coach. Whether that’s right or wrong or fair or not I have no idea but we’re moving on.

Good news. Of all the opinions on this hire, Avery’s is one of the few that actually matters.

And unless the Gibbons and/or Parks legal actions aren't settled out of court (betcha both of them are), we won't know. What we do know is that Billy and AM have loyal supporters; in some cases, perhaps, the same people.

I guess we cannot expect any sort of a skype/zoom event to introduce the new coach to the greater HC community - don't see why such a thing could not be arranged

WORCESTER — In conducting Holy Cross’ first search for a women’s basketball coach in more than three decades, director of athletics Marcus Blossom was looking for someone to help the program reach new heights.
The Crusaders may have found that with the hiring of former University of New Hampshire coach Maureen Magarity on Tuesday.
Magarity spent 10 seasons with the Wildcats, going 146-155 and posting a 10-19 mark last season. Magarity won the Kay Yow National Coach of the Year award in 2017, and her 146 wins were the second highest in women’s basketball history at UNH.
“Holy Cross has always been a special place I’ve always been enamored with,” Magarity said. “Ten years at a school in this profession is a great run for sure, and I loved every minute of it, but at the end of the day, I think Holy Cross was just a great opportunity. In my heart, I felt it was the right move at the right time. It was the perfect fit for me and one of those jobs you just can’t pass up.”
Magarity becomes the seventh head women’s basketball coach in Holy Cross history. Magarity replaces interim coach Ann McInerney, who stepped in to finish the 2018-19 season to replace longtime coach Bill Gibbons, who had been terminated.
McInerney spent 12 seasons at Holy Cross, including 10 as associate head coach. The Crusaders went 6-3 after McInerney assumed the interim coaching role and finished 18-13 and advanced to the PL semifinals. This season, Holy Cross finished 19-11, the most wins since 2013-14, and defeated Lafayette in the first round of the Patriot League postseason. The Crusaders were set to face Bucknell before the NCAA canceled its postseason due to the coronavirus.
Blossom thanked McInerney “for her tireless dedication and commitment to the Holy Cross women’s basketball program as the interim head coach over the past season and a half, and as an assistant coach for nearly 11 years.
“Ann led this program with integrity, and upheld our Jesuit values each and every day,” Blossom added. “I wish her the best as she moves forward.”
Blossom said it was time for a change within the women’s basketball program.
“I felt we needed a fresh start and a new voice,” Blossom said. “From looking at the stats and also a gut feel. ... The last 10 years, our average placement in the Patriot League has been fifth, and last year we finished with the fourth seed. So I felt like nothing had really changed from a historical standpoint. It was good, and Ann did a phenomenal job, but I felt like a new voice was needed because we had just maintained the level we were at.”
Magarity grew up in Poughkeepsie, New York and played for Marist College. Her father, Dave, was men’s basketball coach at Marist from 1986-2004. Magarity played at Boston College for one season before heading to Marist. In three seasons at Marist, she earned two MAAC all-conference selections and helped the Red Foxes to their first NCAA Tournament berth in 2004.
Magarity became an assistant coach at Marist under her father, who had taken over as head women’s coach. She was also an assistant at Fairfield and Army, the latter spent under the wing of her father, who became an assistant with the Black Knights in 2005, took over as head coach in 2006 and has spent the last 15 seasons there.
Magarity helped turn the program around at New Hampshire, posting winning records in three of her first five years and leading the Wildcats to the program’s first winning season since 2005-06. She went 93-60 from 2013-18, including 45 wins from 2016-18, the most victories in a two-year span in school history.
Magarity’s best season was in 2016-17, when the Wildcats finished 26-6 and captured the America East regular-season title. It was the first 20-win season for UNH in more than 33 years. The Wildcats went to their first WNIT since 1999, and Magarity was named the Kay Yow National Coach of the Year, America East Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the WBCA National Coach of the Year.
It will be an interesting time for the Magarity family when the Patriot League season starts and she is competing with her father for a league title.
“When I called my parents (Dave and Rita), they were ecstatic, they couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity. And the next breath out of my dad was ‘Well, you know what my overall record is against Holy Cross,’ ” Magarity laughed.
“It’s a special thing,” Magarity said. “I think throughout my dad’s whole career, things have come up like this where you never really thought about or anticipated. He was a men’s coach for almost 40 years, and when he switched over to the women’s side, growing up he was a Division 1 men’s coach, and I never thought I would work for my dad.
“Flash forward, and I was his assistant for four years, and what a great opportunity,” she added. “I think about this situation and being in the same league. ... It’s like icing on the cake. How cool is that, that I get to compete against my dad in the same league?”
Blossom said the pool of candidates was “exceptionally great” and despite the restrictions the coronavirus protocols on travel presented during the interview process, he was able to execute a thorough search. Blossom drove to New Hampshire to meet with Magarity in her backyard — at the appropriate social distance.
“She’s exhibited her commitment and dedication to not just the basketball side of things for our student-athletes, but to also their overall development, academically, socially, spiritually, and that’s also a hallmark of not just only a women’s basketball player her at Holy Cross, but also a student-athlete,” Blossom said.
“From a competitive standpoint, it was very intriguing to see what she did with the UNH women’s basketball program,” he added. “She did a tremendous job and turned that program around until ultimately winning the America East. ... She doesn’t shy away from the high expectations we have here at Holy Cross.”
Magarity said she had a video conference call with the eight returning players at Holy Cross, as well as a handful of the incoming players, and can’t wait to get started.
The Crusaders graduate five seniors, including forward Lauren Manis, who became the first Holy Cross player, female or male, to reach 2,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. Manis and sophomore guard Avery LaBarbera were All-Patriot League selections.
“That was something looking at this job, they obviously had a great year,” Magarity said. “Ann did a great job taking over, and they won a lot of games and had a lot of success.
“Obviously with the graduation of the senior class, it will take some time,” she added, “but at the same time, just coming off the call with the players, they’re really excited to run and push the ball in transition and play more of an upbeat, fast tempo game, and that was something that was well received.”

Apparently Coach Magarity does not know as. much as a couple of posters on Crossports: "I think Holy Cross was just a great opportunity. In my heart, I felt it was the right move at the right time. It was the perfect fit for me and one of those jobs you just can’t pass up.”

I'm guessing this explains AL's enthusiasm, although, rebounding may be an issue this coming season.

Re Telegram story...Dave Magarity never coached the women at Marist. Coach Maureen Magarity first worked as an assistant under Brian Giorgis at Marist.

It's great to run but you have to finish. Which is why I'm also glad she had the call with EIGHT returning players because that includes Jenay Faulkner. She is a good percentage of the returning experience, speed and athleticism. With the new class coming in, Jenay returning and Avery excited, things are looking up. I have to credit ADMB for keeping the current players on board during the transition.
