According to the media guide, which lists the AP rankings, we were #17 to start the season and the highest we reached was #12

That team was ranked 9th by SI in it's preseason poll. After a loss to Georgetown and a drubbing at Providence in mid January we fell out of the top 20 never to return.

Tough to end up 20-7 and have a bad year, but they did.
Somehow not invited to the NIT, which was the final insult.

Such was often the lot of many mid-major independents.

That was an odd snub in '78....just checked, Army (Coach K) made the NIT that season who we defeated that year. Larry Bird's Indiana St was also in the NIT that year. I'm wondering if they "made it up to us" the following year when we made the NIT with a 17-10 record.

NCAA Tournament expanded in 1979 to 40 teams from 32 teams in 1978. The 8 additional teams in the tournament certainly opened spots in the NIT for a lower rated team. Also not sure of NIT selection process and if perhaps they were looking for some combination of regional representation and potential draw to counteract the expanded NCAA Tourney.
