Appears the rioting came far after the original protest that was set for 6 PM, and that the goal of the late night antics was to cause trouble. Thank you for the insight.

Some peaceful protestors want to be arrested because they are willing to be detained, and perhaps prosecuted, in order to make their point. Think Dr. King in Birmingham or our fellow alumnus, Philip Berrigan many times over.
Anyone who marches down a city street without a permit risks being charged with a misdemeanor or, often, a traffic ticket of sorts. I know that many people, perhaps most, would prefer that these things not get to this, but there is strength in numbers and it is unlikely that police will arrest everyone. Sometimes, these entire "dances" are negotiated in advance including the identification of those who will be arrested.
On the other hand, no permit is required in most parks and other public spaces--certainly not in Lafayette Park at 6:30 pm last night.

Thanks, alum. Logistically, that makes sense on both sides. I just saw upstairs on the news that MSNBC again taglined: peaceful protestors arrested. It can't be just me that sees that statement as somewhat misleading. The police weren't necessarily overreaching. It might be more-accurately stated that law-breaking protesters were arrested. Their peacefulness had no bearing on the reason for the arrests. I don't want to wade into dreaded "fake news" argument territory, so I'll stop right there

Anyone out there have cops in their families ? they have shown incredible restraint - the most difficult job to keep the peace while trying to save lives and protecting businesses/private property. Will they be outnumbered tonight after the sun goes down ? Let's pray that lawful demonstrations are what we see.

But, I dare say no more as the dean will be on my case.

The NYC guy that got jumped last night and drew his gun- glad he held back, would not have ended well for him or the people who jumped him.

I don't want to wade into dreaded "fake news" argument territory, so I'll stop right there It might also be true (and I am agreeing with you) that violent arsonists, rioters, and looters are arrested AND nonviolent lawbreakers are arrested and one selectively reports on the latter. With the descriptor ‘peaceful’. Those of us who can read between the lines know what it means when NYC (of all places) via this Mayor (of all people) institutes an 11:00 PM curfew last night, slides it up to 8:00 for tonight and then extends it thru Sunday. (Reminder:1943 was the last NYC curfew). The issue is not the peaceful folks (lawbreaking or not). NYPD has arrested 2000 thus far including 700 last night specifically for looting. www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/video-shows-vehicle-striking-nypd-officer-violence-spread-despite-curfew/2442678/

If you were mayor of NYC would you have made the curfew earlier or later or do you think 1100 PM was the right time to start it?

Possibly so./ If you start a curfew too early, with no time for preparation by citizens, it virtually guarantees some innocent people being swept into planned demonstrations when they may simply be trying to get home. That can escalate violence beyond where it might otherwise have gone.

Follow up question- would you have waited till Monday (the chaos and police car burning started Thursday night)? Cuomo was so mad at the mayor he could barely talk...but still ripped him apart. (In my link. Above).

Unless I was dreaming, I overheard someone say that 2 were arrested in Worcester last night. I’d like to believe it was with good reason and the WPD didn’t slap the cuffs on while they were being peaceful.

I went to a tournament basketball game at Clark* in March. Scary lookin' neighborhood, no other way to say it. Creepy parking garage too.
*March 4, I think. The thought of that virus went through my mind a few times while I was there. Sat as far away from folks as I could.
