34 - Big Papi 25 - Tony Conigliaro Can never talk about Tony C enough. He hit 104 home runs in his first 494 games. He was 22 years and 7 months old when he was hit by Jack Hamilton's pitch. Managed to have a 36 home run season three years later after making his comeback. Hit more home runs as a teenager than any other player (24.) He is the second youngest player to reach 100 home runs (behind Mel Ott.) I'm not old enough to remember the injury but do remember both comebacks.

That's what happens when you hang out in front of the net all day. (and take all the hits from defense men who don't want you there)

Several other names to consider --
5 - Nomar 8 - Neely (EDIT: Yaz obviously #8) 11 - Bledsoe (I see Edelman has been mentioned, but argument to be made for Drew, IMO) 20 - Ray Allen 38 - Schilling 42 - Vaughn 54 - Bruschi 80 - Troy Brown

How about the question of which player who owned the same house in Medfield, Drew Bledsoe or Curt Schilling was better? Schilling helped break an 84 year curse but Bledsoe "built" Gillette Stadium according to Robert Kraft because he has said he needed to attach Drew's contract to his loan application to get funding to build CMGI Stadium, now Gillette Stadium.

My sister was a student at Regis College when Tony C. made a promotional visit on behalf of a sponsor. She said the whole student body went ga-ga like he was Paul McCartney. He was a handsome kid.

Flutie does not get 2 over a Hall of Famer.
If you want to include college athletes, by all means, give him 22 !

Anyone remember the Big Bad Bruins Bumper Sticker: "Jesus Saves...and Espo gets the rebound!" Not to nit pick, but I think Espo scored on the rebound. Lol The first sports gift I ever received was a framed caricature pic of Tony C. Poor guy....even as a 10 year old, got chills when he hit his first home run in comeback #1. Think at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore.

Course my best friend got The Impossible Dream record as his first sports gift, so I was very jealous for quite a while.

Did uniforms have numbers when tris speaker and babe Ruth were in the Red Sox? Numbers were not worn until the 1929 season. Babe wore number three starting in 1929 with both the Yankees and then the Boston Braves.

On a Conig note- my mother-in-law (God rest her soul) who had many sports connections, grew up in Lynn, dated Tony in HS, and her younger sister dated Billy.

On a Conig note- my mother-in-law (God rest her soul) who had many sports connections, grew up in Lynn, dated Tony in HS, and her younger sister dated Billy. No baby sister to date Richie? I had a three day work assignment in 1976 with a blonde haired young woman who was dating Richie at the time. And then when I was out in California I watched Tony when he was the Sports Anchor for one of the TV stations in San Francisco. Iirc, he was back in Boston for a tryout as a Red Sox color commentator when he had his heart attack or stroke in the airport tunnel and heavy traffic prevented him from receiving timely medical care at the hospital. A real shame.
