Since we have been posting about Native Americans / First Peoples here, it might be appropriate to note that today honors St. Kateri Tekakwitha - the "Lily of the Mohawks." The shrine to this first Native-American saint is in upstate NY (near the site where the Iroquois killed French Jesuit missionaries. She converted to Christianity at 19, devoting her life to Christ. She died at the young age of 24. Pope Benedict XVI presided at her canonization in 2012.

Thanks for this post - I was introduced to a Jesuit priest at one time who worked in that area of NY State and he was involved in the process of her canonization - an amazing short life

I had the Sisters of Charity for eight years. How is she connected to the first Native-American saint? Why are folks asking about her here?

My favorite was Sister Gerard Marie. She was a dynamo about 4’10”. I was once asked why she had a guy’s name. I said it was because she was tougher than any three guys I knew. I was giving a talk at FDU to counselors and used that story. After the talk, a woman came up to me and said “remember me?” It was Sister Gerard in civies. I said “sister...you have legs!!” I gave her a big hug. I still use much of what I learned from her in 4th grade.

I am afraid that Dom Novello is not a spokesman for anything. There is no Father Guido Sarducci. Not a bad comic, but hardly a source. Not a bad skit, Tom.
