Just as far afield for this young whippersnapper.

Art Fleming and Gene Rayburn, too?
And one you might know, but not from his hosting Wheel of Fortune, Chuck Woolery?

Every name that has been mentioned is familiar. That is scary and clearly make me not only old, but the victim of too many hours at the television.

Monty's siblings? Or is that dating me? The George Carlin "Let's Make A Deal" routine was priceless.

As a true George Carlin fan, I found just about every one of his routines priceless. I put him just ahead of Bob Newhart and Shelly Berman.

I remember it well...very well. Thanks for kick-starting that memory. Carlin's "observational humor" was the best. I recall his speaking about the sign in post offices that read "No dogs allowed, except seeing-eye dogs." The sign was inside of the front door glass. He asked "Who is supposed too read that? The dog?" Newhardt would take events from history (like the griper in the Revolutionary War) and give them a totally unexpected, but somehow familiar spin. The best? Hard to say! You may well be right.

Al Sleet, the Hippy Dippy Weather Man! As far as Newhart goes, I was sold on Deadwood the minute I saw William Sanderson in a scene.

How about Biff Burns spotlighting sports in the sportlight spotlight? "Here a partial score from the West coast: San Francisco 6..."

Art Fleming and Gene Rayburn, too? And one you might know, but not from his hosting Wheel of Fortune, Chuck Woolery? Wasn't there an HC Jesuit on Wheel of Fortune when Woolery hosted?

There was indeed. Fr. Chuck Connolly, SJ who, IIRC, was Dean of Housing our freshman year.
Back then, if you solved a puzzle on Wheel of Fortune, you went shopping and would buy things from prize showcases that included things like furniture, trips, and jewelry with the money you earned from spinning the wheel. Fr. Connolly solved one or 2 puzzles and got to go shopping. As a Jesuit, of course, everything he won went to the order.
At the time, the Band would present someone - typically from the campus community - with the Mickey Mouse of the Week Award by describing the person's "accomplishment" and playing the theme to the Mickey Mouse Club.
And of course, the week Fr. Connolly won on Wheel, he was named the Mickey Mouse of the of the Week for NOT buying ... the hot tub!
And yes, a hot tub was one of the items he could have bought as he had enough money to do so.

One of my daughters lives in Bronxville and all four of her kids have taken music lessons at Concordia. My wife and I have attended numerous of their recitals there over the years. So, I'm sorry to see this news.

Sounds like Iona will retain the campus property, so it's not like the land is going on the market or getting redeveloped (anytime soon, at least... Iona's long-term viability is far from assured, itself.) Although it borders White Plains Road, a fairly busy thoroughfare, it is a choice location without doubt.

Pitino should help raise alumni contributions. The ones who say they are discontinuing donations because of him will make more noise but probably didn't give much anyway and some will jump back on the bandwagon with any kind of run in the NCAA tournament.
I don't know if he is tired of it at his professed last stop, but I bet Rick has developed excellent donor and sponsor schmoozing skills over his career.

Amazing correlation you are making - Iona decided to invest tens of millions to take over a bankrupt college in a neighboring town because Pitino is the bball coach and will spur contributions - or is your post just a random thought that you wanted to put somewhere ?

I just don't see Rick Pitino, as talented as he is, as being qualified to serve as Dean of a Health Sciences Program at a college. This is a very peculiar development, but people have underestimated him before and lived to regret it. Stay tuned

I had to google it, so yes, you're still old So I guess Tom Kennedy, Jack Narz, Bud Collier, and Bill Cullen are also out of the question? Gene Rayburn, Allen Ludden, Wink Martindale and Art Fleming??

I guess I'm saying a winning basketball program can excite a whole campus community and make alumni feel more favorable to Alma Mater, and that Pitino had probably helped many millions of dollars get donated to the colleges he coached at over his career. If he can recruit he can fundraise, if he wants to.
