It's a win! we can't have everything... Good outing today (what we saw!) solid on D, good adjustments vs the press, good energy on the floor...Wade got his first start and had a solid game, both ends of the court..Austin was Austin, good to see him hit a few shots around the hoop today, he has missed some bunnies of late...I think the 2 weeks off helped this group, they seemed fresh, and re-energized...To my eye test, it appeared that HC got to shooters before they were in their motion, this is a big improvement! Seems like a few bumps and bruises today, a few ankles or lower body injuries, hopefully nothing major...2 out of 3 would be nice.... This looked like a team that was coached up since the previous game. Some of the freshmen are growing into their roles. Team defense is getting better.

ADMB said HC is in the midst of significant upgrade of video production facilities, hopes to be finished by first home volleyball game, Feb 28th.. Did they start today? He said this before the start of the game. He indicated that the existing video-streaming infrastructure was inadequate, from a production standpoint. From what he said, I took it HC was buying additional, new equipment.

He said it had never been possible to stream more than one event at a time. Today it seemed that we were not even able top stream one.
The multiple seasons being compressed into the Spring will create a demand for multiple events to be streamed. I hope HC is successful in this.

I agree with that observation. Here are some specific areas of improvement HC had more bench points (20-11) HC had more points off turnovers (22-11)HC scored more points in the paint (32-30) HC had more rebounds (31-25) and HOLY CROSS won on a Saturday!

I've been telling everybody this all along - the combo of HC's inadequate equipment + atrocious Charter/Spectrum WiFi is the reason for the perpetual steaming problems. For those who blamed Watch Stadium in past years you were dead wrong.

HC guards off the bench combined to score 20 points today.
During the 3-game stretch when we lost to Lehu by 3, Lehu by 8, and Colgate in OT, the guards on the bench combined to score 2, 10, and 8 points, respectively.
If we our bench was ready to contribute the same way that they now appear to be all year (having an OOC schedule for the frosh to get their feet wet), our PL record could be quite different.
We are still ahead of schedule on the massive rebuild that Nelson inherited IMHO.

Completely different.

That win I guess did not count in the complicated PL standings.
Conference had to overthink this playoff as hard as they possibly could.

WORCESTER — The Holy Cross men’s basketball team went 13 days between games, but the Crusaders made the most of their extra practice time and put together one of their most complete efforts of the year Saturday against Boston University.
Senior guard Austin Butler scored 20 points and had 11 rebounds, both game highs, and led four HC scorers in double figures in an 82-65 win over the Terriers at the Hart Center, snapping a six-game losing streak.
It was the first home win of the year for Holy Cross (3-8). HC and BU split the season-opening series in early January.
“Our guys have been resilient,” HC coach Brett Nelson said. “I’m happy for them to come out and play a good ball game.”
Last weekend’s series against Army was postponed as the Black Knights remained in a COVID-19 quarantine protocol. Numerous scheduling adjustments by the Patriot League resulted in Saturday’s game being HC’s first of three straight against the Terriers. The teams will meet again at 5 p.m. Sunday in Boston and at 5 p.m. Wednesday here.
“The advantage is we’ll recognize their personnel really well because we play them so much,” HC sophomore guard Ryan Wade said. “You get to know each player’s tendencies. The difficulty is they can pick up your tendencies. I think it’s going to come down to who plays the hardest.”
BU (3-6) hadn’t played since Jan. 24.
The Crusaders made a season-best 57 percent of their shots from the field. Wade and junior forward Gerrale Gates each scored 13 points, and senior forward Matt Faw added 10.
HC held BU to 36 percent shooting. The Terriers’ 65 points were the second fewest scored by a Holy Cross opponent this year.
“I thought today was one of our better games,” Butler said. “We need to grow and continue to get better, but I thought today was one of our best games as a team.”
Butler struggled from the field in HC’s last three games, connecting on just 11 of 38 attempts, but was 7 of 14 Saturday and scored 13 points in the second half.
Holy Cross outrebounded BU, 31-29, but Nelson was not thrilled about BU’s 11 offensive boards.
HC led, 34-32, at halftime, and pushed the lead to double digits less than six minutes into the second half.
Steals by Gates and Butler, both on inbounds plays, and freshman Judson Martindale highlighted an 8-0 run as the Crusaders built the lead to 48-38 with 14:38 left.
“We haven’t been pressing like we wanted to,” Butler said. “That was a big emphasis this week, getting back in our press and getting up in their stuff. It’s something we practiced this week, and it worked for us today.”
BU limited Gates to two points in the first half, but he finished in double figures for the 11th time this year. He scored seven points in a two-minute span late in the game, and his layup with 3:07 left put HC in control, 70-55.
Wade, who started 20 games last season, made his first start of 2021. He made 4 of 5 shots and had three rebounds.
“It felt good (to start),” Wade said, “but it’s nothing really different, just going out there and doing what we do and just trying to contribute.”
Gates added eight rebounds and freshman guard R.J. Johnson six assists. Martindale scored nine points off the bench.
“We had contributions across the board,” Nelson said. “Everybody that came in the game really, really helped us. BU is a very good team. (Sunday) will be another battle.”
BU, the defending Patriot League champion, was dealing with some early-season injuries during its 1-5 start. The last time they played, the Terriers swept Lafayette Jan. 23-24.
Junior forward Walter Whyte, who didn’t play in the first two games against Holy Cross, and senior guard Javante McCoy each scored 16 points for BU.

WORCESTER - The Holy Cross bench celebrates during the game against BU on Saturday, February 13, 2021. “I thought he played a really, really good game,” Nelson said. “He made really good decisions. A couple times he was out of control driving, but overall he took the right shots had a great demeanor about him. He played like an upperclassman, and from an action standpoint showed us the way today.”

Do they have to be top 2 in the pod or is there a way to squeak in as the #3? They could get in as 3 probably but have to catch Army. Which they can do. 2 things I don't get. 1. Why does everybody not make the tournament in a year like this. 2. The PL said you have to play 12 games to qualify. Loyola and American are not close to that number. The league decided to not have a bottom 4 play in. I suppose less quick turn around travel in the era of COVID. Not agreeing or disagreeing, it's just what it is Top 2 teams from each division plus top 2 of the remaining 4 teams. I have no clue what the tiebreakers are. Although I'm pretty sure I wish Lehigh hadn't swept HC Loyola has sufficient games scheduled. American does not and I have no clue if they will get the games in or be eligible. Sadly, they're both in the south so one of them is in. Even with an American disqualification, as of today HC is on the outside looking in

Trying to think of a safe way to include all ten teams.

Here are the current standings.......https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/standings/_/group/22
It appears as of right now, BU is 3-6, Lehigh is 3-7 and HC is 3-8....So, we'd be out...however, we "just" have to keep playing hard and get as many wins as possible to jump over Lehigh....It wouldn't be an earth shattering finish to get in...and play at least one more game...

Let’s see how we play tomorrow and how BU responds. I thought BU was more aggressive and physical on the perimeter than other opponents. Given the bumps and bruises today it will be interesting to see how we play. If we build on today and are the same or better I will think we are progressing. If not, I still think we are getting better and have brighter days ahead. Would still like to see Humphrey more often, but minutes are tough to find.
Willing to bet given the ivy/grad school one time. waiver the PL will offer a one time version that works for the league.think this gives Rabinovich and L C 4 more years

There's no implication anywhere that this was some kind of non-leaguer, was there?
American is definitely out. They've played 4 games and have 5 more scheduled; and those 5 games don't start until next week.

I suppose they still have the option to declare a second major and play their fifth year here. Not sure at what point they have to make that decision and if it precludes them from changing their mind and pursuing the grad transfer option.

If they each want to stay an extra year, I think it is a plus for the program

American is definitely out. They've played 4 games and have 5 more scheduled; and those 5 games don't start until next week. I don't think your info is correct. First, the NCAA has already announced that women's teams that don't reach the minimum 13 games can apply for a waiver before Feb. 20 that would still allow them to be in the NCAA tournament, and everything I've seen indicates the likelihood is that similar waivers will be made available to men's teams that don't get to 13 RS games. Second, it's likely that AU will add at least one more regular season game the first week of March, to get to at least 10 games before the PL tournament starts. (It is at least conceivable the PL could squeeze another RS game in if it pushed the start of the tournament back from Saturday. March 6 and played a final RS game that day; quarters could start Tuesday, March 9, with semis on Thursday the 11th and the PL Final still on Sunday the 14th.. Third, the women are also allowed to count one conference tournament game toward their total for the minimum 13 if they need. Assuming waivers will be in place for men's teams, AU is still in good position to finish second in the south pod (currently 1.5 games ahead of Loyola) and make the tournament.

Per Ken Pomeroy's methodology (success at converting possessions to points) this was our best offensive game of the last 59 games, since Jan 12, 2019 win over Lafayette

It may well work academically for Gates and Townsend. I do rememberNelson saying on the season ticket holders Zoom call if an alum(s) were to establish a graduate program, that would be a big help to the basketball program. I do believe his tongue was firmly planted in his cheek but it sounds like he is anticipating grad transfers down the road.

In the last four games Austin Butler has passed Jim Schnurr, Keith Hochstein, George Kaftan, Jim McCaffrey, R.J. Evans, Torey Thomas, and Paul Durkee to reach #26 on HC's career scoring list. This, of course, is based on total points, not scoring average
