I don't know their budget but by dividing 1345 undergraduates by 25 sports they have taken the Holy Cross participatory model and put it on steroids. D-2 can grant athletic scholarship aid so they probably weave that into their overall financial aid/recruitment strategy. Their founding mission was to provide education to newly arrived immigrants so they haven't had too many blue blood families send students there and boost the endowment, but they have one thing going for them. Conspicuous success in one endeavor: D-1 men's hockey, has changed my view of AIC for the better. It's funny how the Yellow Jackets 2019-21 reign atop the AHA (only two championships due to Covid in 2020) rubs off on the image of the whole school at least for me. David:1, Goliath: 0

So, What’s your point? I am not seeing the relevance of AIC having a Rugby team to our discussion. Why do you think it is a Varsity Team? That category does not exist in a formal level, certainly not by the NCAA. Rugby as a men’s sport at AIC is a club sport, not varsity. It is a varsity sport for women. aicyellowjackets.comen.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/College_rugby#Governance“In the United States, college rugby is governed by (in descending order of authority): USA Rugby, geographical unions (GUs) and local area unions (LAUs) (e.g., NERFU). USA Rugby has established a College Management Committee and a collegiate director, Rich Cortez, to oversee college rugby.[24] The NCAA has no authority over college rugby. Often called a club sport, each college team is administered by either the athletic department or the student club department.” UC Santa Barbara does not have a Nordic or Alpine Ski Program. Colleges and Universities are going through a critical assessment regarding the Return on Investment and the relevance to their institutions. Stanford, just cut 11 sports, that has more of a critical impact to the USA Olympic Sports Programs and our country’s ability to compete in the Olympics this summer than AIC Rugby. Good for AIC having a Varsity Rugby Program. Maybe we will see it on the ESPN family of networks this spring. In case you don’t know, Men’s Rugby is not a NCAA sanctioned sport. Women’s Rugby 🏉 is a NCAA emerging sport. A list of schools that have Rugby can be found in the Wiki article posted above.. With a $17 million dollar endowment, let’s hope that AIC will survive to continue sponsoring Rugby on a varsity level for Women. Wonder what their athletic budget is each year? There are certainly budget cuts on the horizon, just not in athletics but also to the college’s Academic offerings which is unfortunate. www.masslive.com/news/2020/07/springfields-american-international-college-says-17m-budget-gap-will-force-faculty-cuts.htmlUm, I would know it is a varsity program since I actually have worked for them when they hosted a tournament. They have actual athletic department staff that works the event. Holy Cross Athletic Department doesn't staff their rugby program. And AIC announced on 1/19/2021 they were adding Men's Volleyball. aicyellowjackets.com/news/2021/1/19/aic-set-to-add-mens-volleyball-jose-named-head-coach-cribbin-promoted.aspx

Men’s Rugby is not a varsity sport at AIC! Read their athletic website! Which I posted above. Men’s Rugby at AIC is a club sport. Read the Wiki citation regarding Rugby.. Good for AIC to add Men’s Volleyball. Wonder why they are adding a sport, when they are eliminating academic programs? Maybe they are getting ready to end their baccalaureate programs, and become a northern version of IMG Academy. Stanford is eliminating Men’s Varsity Volleyball. That team has had two national championships and 18 All American’s. So why should we on Crossports give a ::::::: about AIC adding Men’s Volleyball. Stanford with infinitely more resources than AIC, with endowed of $27.7 billion, and multiple endowed coaching positions has decided to eliminate Men’s Volleyball after this year along with 10 other programs. www.offtheblockblog.com/2020/07/stanford-to-end-mens-volleyball-program-following-2021-season/Men’s Volleyball is being added at the D2 and D3 and NAIA level. It is either stagnant or being eliminated in D1.There are only 23 D1 programs in the NCAA. 23 NCAA Division 1 men’s volleyball colleges 25 NCAA Division 2 men’s volleyball colleges 107 NCAA Division 3 men’s volleyball colleges 43 NAIA men’s volleyball colleges 41 men’s volleyball junior colleges www.ncsasports.org/mens-volleyball/collegesMen’s D1 Volleyball is not an eastern college sport, with few exceptions being Harvard, Princeton, Sacred Heart. Just like Ice Hockey is not a sport sponsored by schools west of the Rockies.

Yet another thread completely off the rails. You expect anything less on Crossports. 🤣 Glad we have rails to ride, and occasionally go off. Makes it fun to discuss, especially on a day of upsets. Maybe some people have had their brackets completely busted, so they come to Crossports for solace. 🤔😂🤣

Yeah - because rugby at AIC is so germane to all going on in the sports world this weekend.

I agree. Just trying to keep some people honest. I don’t understand why it was initiated in this thread.
Prefer discussing how Villanova, Loyola, Gonzaga and Creighton are still in the tournament.

Institutional support,(including lower academic standards than for the rest of the student body), coaching/recruiting, retaining, support from the respective league

I don't feel any moral outrage over the lower academic standards for athletes but also no complaint about HC being in a league that doesn't utilize that tool. It does however make coaching/recruiting/retaining even more critical for HC.

I wouldn't say outrage for myself.
I don't care if athletes are representative of the poorer students at any institution. Far from outraged, I do think it is wrong when athletes are orders of magnitude poorer students than the rest of the student body

It's good to be Porter Moser right about now, I would say. Have to think schools like Indiana and Marquette would be ready to offer him a king's ransom to leave the Ramblers. On the other hand, when I listen to him I get a Mark Few kind of vibe - seems very comfortable with his situation. Speaking of Gonzaga, I would give anything to have a Gonzaga-Loyola matchup (have no idea where they are in the brackets; don't have one in front of me).
Cameron Krutwig is cool.

Loyola (Chicago) sponsors 13 varsity sports including one sport Holy Cross doesn't sponsor in men's volleyball Loyola sponsors six sports for men.and 7 for women. The plant infrastructure for athletics consists of three venues. Gentile Arena, Loyola Soccer Park and Loyola Softball Park. For men, their prime programs are Basketball and Volleyball. Holy Cross has 8 Outside Varsity Competition Venues ams 4 Inside Varsity Competition Venues. The two schools, while Jesuit, work on entirely two different athletic models. Loyola runs a very lean model for varsity athletic competition, Loyola Chicago has 12,000 undergraduate students, Holy Cross has 3,000 students. loyolaramblers.com/facilitiesWhen everyone is a varsity athlete, I guess you see what the result is in the records of the teams...
