We finished 7th of 7 yday in a one day tourney in Ct. Three pretty good frosh on the roster and one shot 79 one of the biggest recruiting disparities in the PL is women's golf - check out the BU (our next opponent) roster and their 'hometowns' - amazing goterriers.com/sports/womens-golf/roster

Yes, I'm out there criticizing our lousy minor sports but when I see something positive, I'm going to let people know - our rising soph Liz Garfield (our no.1 player) who was shooting in the mid 80's in the spring played very well in the Ct state women's amateur championship this week - she finished 5th overall, shooting 74-79 = 153 total

If you read the long bio of Coach Challis, who will probably be turning 71 this year as a 1972 graduate of Babson, it states at the end, "In the FUTURE, he plans on opening a girls golf camp in Pinehurst, NC." Go get 'em Coach! HC needs good minor sports recruiting budgets because if you say "Boston University" in Vietnam or Korea or Australia you at least get some comprehension but "Holy Cross" has to be explained more thoroughly.

Giving this thread a bit of a bump. Women's opened the season down at Blue Hill CC in MA (a nice track with renovated amenities and a good history) at the BC tournament. A local sophomore from North Easton led the team with...+12. A number of the bios on the roster do not list hometown information currently. When I was at HC, the women's golf team competed in the Big South. We had mostly New England kids and seemed to struggle a bit against competition from the Carolinas. That said, going off memory alone, I remember some competitive tournaments in the northeast. I absolutely love golf but can't say I follow HC or local college golf. Talking to our varsity golf coaches at work, they pointed out most highly competitive golfers are looking for D1 scholarships, even if that means URI or Bryant instead of a UNC or Duke. Do we offer golf schollies currently? goholycross.com/news/2021/9/22/womens-golf-womens-golf-opens-season-at-boston-college-invitational.aspx

We do not offer a $ for women's golf and the results usually reflect that - but, the idea is to recruit w/o them and sell the school and the Worcester CC practice facility - it looks like our coach is finally doing just that as 7 of the 13 on the roster are frosh. Our performance at the BC tourney was actually very good. I don't know if we have ever had a player shoot three consecutive rounds in the 70's, but our soph Tate Hadges from North Easton did with rounds of 72-77-79. Congrats to her and the other players also did pretty well with rounds in the 70's and 80's.

Do we offer golf schollies currently? The only PL school that gives any athletic scholarships is Boston U, and they are far from fully funded. Richmond, who is an associate PL member in that sport also gives some aid. Bucknell, HC, and Lehigh give no athletic aid at all. There are very few northeastern mid-majors who give any golf scholarship money. The PL began to sponsor Wgolf in 2012-13, when Navy added a women's golf team. Prior to that, Bucknell and Holy Cross were in the Big South and Lehigh played an independent schedule.

In a word, NO. Per coach Napoli, there is no scholarship money for the men's team and I assume it's the same over on the women's side. Steve did say there are some schools in the Northeast that offer scholarships, such as St. John's. As an aside, one of his incoming freshman was a beneficiary of the Cangaree Initiative, a program that provides scholarships to kids from low-income families who aspire to play golf at the college level. I think both HC programs will benefit from full rosters this year as well as the new simulator in the Jo. Onward and upward!

I would say Blue Hills is nicer.

Yes, there is some hope for this program - but I'm amazed how the SID's office does a lousy job with these sports - if you look at the roster, there's very little (not even a home town) for many of the frosh and nothing about the returners from the spring season - is it too much to ask ? I guess so

I remember when the SID was one person helped by a couple of student volunteers. Even with so many women's sports, three full-time people can certainly do better than this, no?

Asking for a hometown and h.s. Is not too much to ask. If you google any of these student athletes you can get all sorts of info. Doesn’t the SID office have some student volunteers to assist ?

In theory, you have a full-time person for each of these programs...Football, Men's and Women's Hockey, Men's and Women's Basketball. So right there are five full-timers. They have three. This Saturday they are hosting two home games with the Football team playing downtown at a new facility while the Men's Hockey team is playing a road game at Bentley. Do you recognize how many staffers have to work a football game from stating the game to doing participation to media requests to making content for Social Media?

No student should be "Volunteering" to help. I worked at UNH all day Saturday and they had students actually getting PAID to help out in the department.

Ok, let me rephrase - don’t we have some students being paid to assist ? The whole thing smacks of D.3 - some of these small details on fall rosters could have been done over the summer the coaches know who they have coming in.

Agree it's much work, but the players and families could fill out the story of their athletic journey before HC by submitting their own photos and videos to be uploaded. When prospective student athletes visit the website and it's crickets and tumbleweeds it's a less compelling message than if they read about a current HC player and see photos of a youth team that looks a lot like their own youth team.
I wonder if any colleges have monetized their athletic website by offering premium (paid) subscriptions to see expanded coverage? That seems to be the way of the world but I hope it doesn't come to goholycross.com.
