Cuban national basketball team. This curated collection is composed of photographs from the South Dakota basketball delegation trip to Cuba in April, 1977. The trip, from April 4-8, 1977, was a joint venture between the Senator McGovern and Senator James Abourezk, and between the University of South Dakota and South Dakota State University. A total of twenty people traveled as a delegation and included Dave Martin, SDSU Sports Director, Senators McGovern and Abourezk, several members of the national press, and five students and five advisors from SDSU. That visit was in April, well before pumpkin season.

Yes! It was during Pumpkin Season. SDSU played the Cuban Team, two weeks after Halloween. Holy Cross played the Cuban National team, the day after Thanksgiving, when the smell of Pumpkin Pie, was fresh in the air. Holy Cross weekend was remarkable. Holy Cross played the Cuban National Team on Friday, November 25, 1977 in the Hart Center. The next day, Saturday, November 26, 1977, Holy Cross, beat Boston College at Fitton Field. Holy Cross was the last stop on a tour of American college basketball teams that fall, for the Cuban National Team, that was kicked off, with a game against defending NCAA champion Marquette.

A combined team from South Dakota and South Dakota State toured Cuba last spring. Oh ok, the trip to Cuba was a combined team. Good question had people stumped. Cuba won 65-55 In the second half, the older and more experienced Cuban team took over, pulling away for a 65-55 victory. "They just wore us down," Jackrabbit head coach Gene Zulk was quoted in the Nov. 14, 1977, edition of the Sioux Falls Argus Leader. "Their inside game is so strong.

The Holy Cross team had Ronnie Perry, Chris Potter and Michael Vicens. Would have liked to have heard the translated banter between Michael and the Cuban players guarding him.
The Cuban series, maybe the only time HC and SDSU, have faced a common opponent within a two week span.

All I could find is they have played Lehigh and Boston College. In 2013 they played Lehigh on November 26 and Lehigh played Holy Cross on January 18. ACTP is going to get upset. This isn't FCS playoff talk. Sorry. Found a better one Belmont in 2013-2014 Belmont played the Cross on November 23 Belmont played South Dakota State on December 14 Attachments:

Yes ..We are off target, and into the tangent and into the rabbit hole.... that is Crossports. Being in the rabbit hole, does bring us back to SDSU. 😂
Looking at the list of schools on the tour, still really surprised, that Holy Cross was included. HC was the only non state university.
I am still amazed that George Blaney and Ron Perry was able to arrange the game.

OK, today is Wednesday, April 21.... I just received an email from HC (9:14am) regarding FCS Playoff Ticket Information.... According to the email it was sent on Monday, April 19, 6:24pm, informing us that a limited number of tickets available to the general public would go on sale at 9:00am on Tuesday, April 20th. Did anyone else receive the same email this morning? I don't know why or the cause of the delay, but this is not the first time something like this has happened with the athletic email distribution system. !

Per my post earlier, this simply means all “pods” have been reserved. The ticket office reiterated that if Saturday is similar to other SDSU home games this season, someone that reserved a “pod”/row of 6-8 tickets has been only using ~half of them which means some extra tickets will be floating around tailgates. I got my 4 (requested the HC/Visitor section) and am ready to roll! SDSU ticket office was very helpful and professional (ask for Jordan or Cody)

^ Lol, unless you’re NDSU or USD I’d like to think we love having opposing fans visit.

We were ranked #9 preseason in Sports Illustrated and ranked in the Top 20 during much of the season. This is why we were considered to be included in the Big East. This thread just gets curiouser and curiouser

JFL, any advice on good tailgating spots (parking lots/sides of the stadium, or even a walking distance stadium adjacent bar etc)? By your post, I’m assuming when you say “no policy” it means that tailgating is business as usual and not off limits?

My bad, I worded that poorly, “SDSU has a no tailgate policy” meaning that it is not allowed this spring. That said there are a few great restaurants in town for both pre and post game enjoyment. A list of a few would be Cubbies, Pints & Quarts, Wooden Legs Brewery, Eponymous Brewery,Whiskey Creek, Craft, George’s, Wilbert’s, Guadalajara’s, La Cantina. Most of these are open for lunch and dinner. There’s also chains like BWW and Applebee’s Lunch only best bet would be Nick’s hamburgers, www.nickshamburgers.com/ ,great little shop.

Olympic sport rules out hoops. The only 'Olympic' sports that HC competes in Oct-Nov are soccer, volleyball, and cross country. Plus rowing in the head of the river races. Sailing was also a fall sport, once. I think fencing was a winter sport. I see that the last Olympics you watched was hosted by Jim McKay.🙂

Fixated, I was, with Jim McKay and the weekly reprising of "the agony of defeat" until it was seared into my memory. (My grievous mistake in assuming Olympic sports was as defined by Olympic sports at HC.)

There was a snow/ice event that night and Greg Gaskins got in a car accident and broke his leg, was out for the season. A very valuable reserve on the 76-77 team- certainly one of the reasons 77-78 didn't end up as good as we were hoping it would.

For those who will not be venturing to SD for the game, it will be televised on ESPN3. This is an internet streaming service. For those who have a Smart TV that is interfaced with your internet service, the game should be able to be viewed on TV. I have Comcast cable with Xfinity X1. ESPN3 is accessible by using my voice remote function (you won’t find a designated channel for it). ESPN3 comes up on the screen and there are numerous sporting events that you can click on to watch, including all of Saturday’s FCS playoff games. You click on the game you want to watch when it is scheduled to start and the live feed downloads off the internet and on the screen in HD.
