It is an Olympic Sport. The events occurred within two weeks of each other. Were the leaves beginning to fall or were the flowers beginning to bloom...or was there frost on the pumpkin?

The frost was on the pumpkin at the time the events occurred. It was memorable....

I'm thinking the sport involved using a stick of some kind.

How about hockey and the Minnesota Golden Gophers. I can't remember back that far...

Was it a post season tournament not leading to an NCAA championship?

Notre Dame didn't play SDSU in basketball during the 2005 season so the NIT game is out.

Was it a post season tournament not leading to an NCAA championship? .. It was not a game in a tournament. But it was widely reported.

Hearing from SDSU's sources that the game is now sold-out. Little bit surprised SD has limited crowd sizes at events as Gov. Noem has been one of the more outspoken critics of covid-related restrictions etc. For the record, Gov. Noem is not supported by everyone in SD. She has no say over NCAA requirements. HC alum, Dr. Anthony Fauci, has had a thing or two to say about SD Gov Noem's approach (or lack of approach) to Covid...personally, I'm following the recommendations of the HC alum. Meanwhile, the HC fans attending the game Saturday: keep an eye on South Dakota's statistics about Covid. The State is not a model to be followed...apparently we have lots of "rights" to get sick. SDSU's team, on the other hand, has somehow avoided Covid problems this spring season.

An alternative to flying to Sioux Falls: United has direct flights from Chicago O'Hare to Watertown, SD, which is an hour north of Brookings via Interstate 29 (80 mph speed limit so it's a quick trip). Right now, as a result of reduced boardings due to Covid, there's just one flight per day from O'Hare to Watertown on a Sky-West Regional Jet (50 capacity) flying as United Express. I haven't looked at flight prices lately but Chicago to Watertown has been a fair amount cheaper than Chicago to Sioux Falls.
[Flying through or from O'Hare seems the logical choice when going to play the 'Rabbits!]

Another hint....
It was a memorable weekend for two Holy Cross teams. Neither team used sticks.

Yes!
A replay of one of the teams is on U Tube for review from that weekend. One of the games played by the Holy Cross teams was definitely an upset.

if Myra Hiatt was still with us, HC might have had a chance to fly on one of the Pat's 767s. If the Patriots accepted the charter fee that the NCAA travel consultant computes and/or met the lowest competitive bid for the charter flight it would be a good investment for the Pats because the Patriots plane landing at the airport would have a much better chance of making the evening news than an Allegiant jet. The Pats have a modest national following who purchase merch so publicity is good. Their two planes served them well when they brought in PPE from China. The planes flew health care providers to Tampa for the Super Bowl. Fr. B., ADMB, and Grace Rett's family flew to Florida on a corporate jet. We can play guess who provided the plane, and what, if any, Holy Cross connection.

Olympic sport rules out hoops. The only 'Olympic' sports that HC competes in Oct-Nov are soccer, volleyball, and cross country. Plus rowing in the head of the river races. Sailing was also a fall sport, once. I think fencing was a winter sport.

The only sport for the trivia question I can think would be men’s or women’s basketball...I’d go with women’s if I were to guess, common team, Notre Dame.
Thankful the game isn’t today...trace amounts of snow on the ground and 14 degrees at sunrise. It’s a little brisk, might need a hoodie.

It was a national team visiting the U.S. I want to say rugby, but that's not an Olympic sport. It may have been a club team at HC that played against this other team. Maybe ultimate frisbee?

Cuban national basketball team. This curated collection is composed of photographs from the South Dakota basketball delegation trip to Cuba in April, 1977. The trip, from April 4-8, 1977, was a joint venture between the Senator McGovern and Senator James Abourezk, and between the University of South Dakota and South Dakota State University. A total of twenty people traveled as a delegation and included Dave Martin, SDSU Sports Director, Senators McGovern and Abourezk, several members of the national press, and five students and five advisors from SDSU.
