I looked at the basketball roster goholycross.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster and found Tomer Oron, a 6'3" 170 pound guard out of the High School of Math Science and Engineering which is apparently affiliated with the City University of New York. We do not seem to have any threads discussing him. What do we know?

Watched the highlights on his Twitter page. The best was seeing the outdoor senior game tape. That was the only venue for the NYC public schools this spring. My guess is that he is a walk on.

Why do we continue to add guards on this roster-Walk-on or scholarship? An injury away from being very light at the 4/5 positions

I believe there are few available bigs who could be walk ons. Damon Hart is a rare one. I presume we work hard for bigs worthy of a scholarship. Looking at benches of most schools playing on TV, the players at the end look like guards to me.

For walk-on guards I recall DeVaughn Reid--from West Orange NJ but Rice HS which I believe is in NYC. He was a solid contributor in game play, not just in practices. Jeff Harris was another NYC walk-on guard and before him. Geo Sanchez, who saw a lot of playing time.

We appear to be filling a roster with players we like or want vs what we need, but then again I know I am missing something
Gates is a 4 Mike R is a 4/5 Austin is a 4/5 Louth is a 4/5 DJ is a 4
1/3 of the roster can play a 4/5
Gates is a proven 4 and back up 5
The others can prove to be great which would be fantastic but not sure we are there yet
The other PL teams have established 5’s we dont
So our response is grab more talented guards from NYC?
I hope these decisions work!

Agree With you but at 6’5/6’6 he matches up better at the 4 in the PL
This coming season, even without a proven 5,I expect us to be significantly better, even with 4 guards, if we can defend

Oron is a walk-on who will help out in practice. He’s not taking a spot from some 6’9” guy who shows up in the Fall and wants to walk on. If that guy shows up, he can also walk on.

Wish Bob F were still with us to call him Omar Toron.

There's something to be said for having a lot of athletic players who can play multiple positions but you cannot and will not win without a decent big (or two) who can compete down low. Every time I go to an HC game in person I'm struck by how important the low post play is. Nelson is bringing in some great athletes but they'll be hamstrung if the bigs can't hold their own.

Jury is certainly still out on Rabinovich and Louth but I haven't lost faith that one or both could be good PL bigs. Rabinovich's season was basically lost due to injury and Louth getting such a late start ruined any chance of him contributing right away. I will agree we'll be in trouble if neither is the answer as the league in general has a lot of talented big men.

In the IL, a player like Oron, given his high school, would be rostered to help with the AI.

I remain hopeful that at least two of the three of Louth, Mike and Austin will be significant contributors in the front court in 2021-22 and beyond. Tough to predict at this point how any of the three will turn out but they all came to HC with pretty good resumes. Louth certainly looks the part based on the results of his recent training efforts.

From his high school coach: “He’s a gem,” George said. “He plays every position in high school, and he’ll play at least 3-4 positions in college. He’s just an all-around fantastic young man, fantastic student, fantastic player. “He’s got a 7-3 wingspan. He was probably the best defensive player in the Richmond metro area. He’s pretty impossible to score on near the rim.“

And unlike Luc, Caleb got to play some games this season with Team Virginia, since his high school season was cancelled, as was Luc’s. Lewis’ team played some games.

It's always good to have numbers on the roster. Injuries can make it very hard to have good practices without those at the end of the bench..They are valuable to the team...Bigs that are walk-ons are very few..Occasionally a big will be a walk-on for a year or so if their financial aide package is loaded, i.e. a very good student...

Maybe HC lucked out - the kid didn't get to play any kind of school-related (hs or prep) ball this year.
